Does anyone know if 'upgradeyourlaptop' has said anything about what models the card works in?

I am curious as to whether they work in the NP8170. How can they mention shipping if they haven't mentioned test results or confirmed whether they even work in certain models.

I asked him several days about P170HM. He says we are still testing them on Hm Models. Its strange that they sell them without proper testing.

    Hello,

Testing is aimed to be finished in a day or two with shipping beginning at the end of the week. Your patience is appreciated, there's not long to go now!

I am really dissapointed becouse i thought shipping will take place on the 4th, please note that they will say nothing in detail about testing, eg. How long does it take to put the card into m17x r2 and see if it works...... 2 weeks ? :(

*sigh* they ALSO said that the OEM cards they received just recently differed so much from their previously tested QS/ES samples, that they would have to do all the testing all over again. that, the fact that they have like a dozen different models to test AND waiting for finalized drivers from AMD naturally means they had to postpone the shipping dates. this has been said lots of times already people, pay attention :)

    cheers

I don't think it's an issue of paying attention. I think people (myself included) are just tired of waiting and frustrated. We were given a date, and assumed that they (upgradeyourlaptop) took all of the testing/QC measures into consideration before establishing and committing to that date.

I'm sure this isn't the first time they've received GPU's to test and realized they weren't exactly as expected. They should have used this experience to predict a realistic ship date.

As for the drivers, I understand they have no control of when they are released. Then again, if you have no idea when they will be released, don't set a date.

Hey got the card today, and put it in the R2 installed these drivers:
    AMD Catalyst 8.97 18 April – 7900 MOD – BenchmarK3D

But i have a problem, the fan is stuck at what sounds to be around 50 percent, and GPUZ doesn't show clocks or temps, same goes for HWinfo.

    This is Vbios:
    Version: 015.017.000.001.042717

    Anybody have some input?

Try a power drain. If you've got a Dell card it should work. Unless there's a difference between OEM and ES, and I don't think there is.

Edit: Ah, R2... might be similar to the issue with the Dell 6900m series in the R2. Fan issues with the Dell card.
Use HWiNFO to automatically control your fans.

Yea, I know with the 6900 series, a dell card would give fan issues. Stuck at 100%. With a Clevo 6900 card, the fans worked like normal in the R2. I wonder if this holds true for the 7970.

I dont think it is possible to adjust fans via HWinfo :(

I have no Clock speed no temps nothing.

Did the 6900 show temps and clockspeeds in ie. GPUZ?

    Point taken :D.

With regard to fans, I know it can be done but the problem is that there is something fishy going on. The computer crashes when i try to load the sensors from HWinfo. Same with afterburner. So something is not right, can it be that different from the m15x...

Edit: Tried to save the Vbios from the card, and got the message "BIOS reading not supported on this device"

In the M15x, with regard to the 6900 series cards, the M15x worked perfect with Dell cards. The Clevo cards gave fan issues, ie fans stuck at 100%. The opposite was true with the M17x R2

Yeah it sounds like what happened with the 6970M Dell vs Clevo models with the differences in how they communicate with the EC (i wonder if the EC firmware can be edited...)

With the 7970M are you able to run your system on battery without it freezing once it's unplugged? Also, are you able to completely shut down your system normally (by going through windows)?

When you start HWiNFO, click on "configure", you should see a section called "GPU I2C Bus Exclusion". Check "3" (the fourth box), leave the rest unchecked.

Your VBIOS is the current Dell OEM VBIOS, no need to dump it.

Yes no problem running on battery, and I can also shut down via windows - only problem is that my system doesn't seem to be able to communicate properly with the 7970m.
Maybe a clevo Vbios would work better, or maybe newer drivers. When they are released?

Could you post a screen shot of the settings? Doesn't seem to work, maybe it's me hence the screen shot :)

Oh, nevermind, I forgot that this version of HWiNFO isn't released yet. So just uncheck the GPU I2C settings which are available.

Ok, unfortunately the computer still crashes when loading sensors #9 maybe #10 can't tell for certain.

Think it's #9 it's on the GPU thats for sure :).

Anyways thx for your help - time for some sleep, maybe the solution presents itself tommorow :)

Edit: The new version of HWinfo 3.96 released today (probably the one you were talking about svl7) works with the 7970m in the R2 - fan control is now an option :D

They could have easily kept people updated concerning the testing phase or given at least some idea about any models that were working. If this was an officially supported card then I could understand.

Dell service told me that m18x R2 won't work with crossfire 7970m and now as you can see you can config m18x R2 with xfire. Don't listen to them...

    PS any updates from upgradeyourlaptop?

As a measure of good service, communication really helps reduce tension and keep your customers in the loop.

Without them you have no company (in this case not us specifically but all their consumers).

The best idea especially when handeling an enthusiast community would of to either:

    A) Create an official post on a well known website (such as here) and make it the official place for updates.

    or

    B) Create a mass mailing list of every pre-order customer and mail out updates.

You could feel free to put a disclaimer that all information is in that mail/thread and that correspondents for info will be ignored.

    You then:

    1) Don't waste your time answering dozens of emails.
    2) Keep your customers informed without spending HOURS.

These seem like two very simple methods.

I keep on seeing posts from people saying 'be patient' or 'they have already given a shipping date'

That is not really the issue, people want some idea whether the cards work in their systems. It seems like they started off really well, keeping people updated, talking about wanting to test to make sure no one receives problematic cards and about gaining trust of the community. A simple post concerning progress of testing wouldn't take very long and it would most likely save them from all of the emails people have probably flooded them with. A little communication goes a very long way but complete silence is deadly.
