maybe its when they have access to the cards? Does slick have an OEM version or an ES?

His is ES as i read. I wonder if upgradeyourlaptop is selling ES too?
Im buying the barebone from NEXOC. -

5870m/3D is stock 1.05V. Don't compare to mutant hardwired Asus 5870m or earlier vBIOS versions of other brands.
My MSI 5870 runs at 700/1000 with 0.95V! My 6970m in the G73 runs at stock clocks with 0.95V too.
That 7970 is a beast, if it comes to customers like this ES. -
That's probably when they get hands on the GPU but officially they will be available before june -
-
Estimated Ship Date:5/21/2012
It was 12 May before, it goes up the more people order it.
Early/mid may shipping is confirmed, and yes it's for the 7970m if you check the middle option it comes in may 21 too (it got 7970m)
Alienware M17x Full HD 3D Gaming Laptop Details | Dell
When m17x R3 was just released many people order it and release turned 1 month later for people who didn't order it early
7970m shipping/releasing in may not "production" -
I guess i could wait a bit longer to get the 7970 even if it were in June, but i need to be sure switchable graphics will work with it in the P170EM as i just dont want to loose out on that extra battery life.
-
According to one of the clevo resellers, powernotebooks , the 7970m is 100 more than gtx 675. I thought it was supposed to be cheaper ?

Well I hope the price drops a little to reflect this.

I can't imagine they are mass producing Engineering samples. -
Slick has a QS final version card, it's called that because it was made available before the official release date (for test/quality control purposes) so I'm sure performance-wise it's the same as OEM. I am never buying from upgradeyourlaptop anymore because they sell cards that cannot be overclocked as well as Dell cards
-
-
Dell cards have always scored more. Clevo use Samsung memory chips which suck, highly likely they will continue to do so :/
In the past Dell 6990M could achieve a stable 200Mhz more on the memory... -

For gaming it doesn't matter in the slightest, but for those chasing benchmark numbers then it could make a difference...

Sooo we can't get 7970M OEM version till june i guess?
-
MP or Mass Production = OEM
Both can be overclocked, just Dell will overclock better (slightly) -

Well, if MP == OEM, then i'll buy it, i just won't ES version... -
OC'ing too much in a laptop is sketchy though; I wouldn't want to OC more than 10-15% even in an Alienware with their slightly superior cooling .
It could seriously lower the lifespan of your card. -
@Heihachi Well that is debatable. Dell ES is better than Clevo MP/OEM in my opinion. I've owned a Dell ES 6970m before which could be unlocked to a 6990m
plus it OC'd like a champ thanks to better parts.

-
Never going with Clevo parts again. Ever. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
that's nice, you keep doing that. -
How long has your 45% OC been stable???
Also how is the 256GB SSD Solution you have going on? I might get a 256GB Crucial or 240GB Corsair SSD, is it enough room if you don't store all of your movies/music on it? I just want my OS, Photoshop Suite, BF3, D3, Skyrim, and a few other games.
I figured it's enough for me; how does it work out for you? I heard you aren't supposed to fill SSD's more than 75-85%? -
No stability problems here either. I think it's uncontrolled temps that does them in, not overclocking per se. My cards rarely ever exceed 75°C to 80°C even in 3DMark11 and Vantage runs. Highest I think I ever remember seeing with Furmark was around 82°C. Although, I don't run Furmark any more.
I just ordered 2 Vertex 3 240GB because my M4 128GB SSD was too small. I'm moving my Momentus 750GB HDD to the optical bay so I can put the Vertex 3 into a 480GB RAID0 config. I have one Vertex 3 installed right now and will probably finish the rest of the setup later today or tomorrow.

Yup my 6990m is an (ES) I got for an insane price and so far its been working like a champ. Haven't really tried to push the card yet though cause I don't wanna fry it since It doesn't have warranty unlike a card from dell.
-
I think 240GB SSD would be enough for me for a while; once It gets to 75% + I want to buy another and put it in the optical bay. Win 7 64 Bit takes like 40GB ish, BF3 15-20GB, D3 = 15GB, Skyrim = 10GB w/ saves, that all adds up to only 85GB, then I have a solid 100GB till I'm at 75%, and I only plan on having 2 or 3 additional games and a few programs so I'll probably have leftover 50GB + of room just for saves and a few files. The rest I think I'll just store on my 750GB External that runs USB 3.0 [ movies/music/extra files I dont need much]
Is it hard to get the financing for Alienwares? Making payments would be much easier than plopping down cash. I can get a wicked Ivy Bridge, 7970m, 240GB SSD P150EM Clevo for like $1600, I know on Alienware this would be like $2100, but if It's financed thats only like 60-80 a month. -
@Tony - where push comes to shove, I've never had a real need to overclock for playing games. Stock clocks are more than enough power for great gaming performance with 6900M series and GTX 580M. Only need it for number chasing. I bet your R3 with 6990M slices through all games like a knife through hot butter.
@Micah - should not be difficult to get Dell financing. Call 1-800ALIENWARE and work with a rep on the config you want. You'll not only get a better deal than web pricing in most cases, but he/she can set up the Dell financing for you. You might be surprised how much closer you can get to the price of a Clevo than you can with web pricing. Whatever you decide on, be sure to get at least 3 years advance on-site warranty. Go 4 years if you can swing it. You won't regret having it and the price is somewhere around 50-75% less for the warranty when buying it with a new system (as opposed to extending it after purchase).

Thanks a lot Mr. Fox +1 to you!
I will still likely get a Clevo though as I don't want to wait till May 21 for my 7970m machine. And I want a 15.6" not a 17.3" because I have to use this for school also. With Optimus and low brightness and no WiFi people have gotten up to 5 hours battery with the P150EM, not bad; enough for me to go and take notes in 2 classes, my classes all have Outlets also if need be because I'm going to the newest buildings at my school which is awesome. -
Problem with Dell cards in Clevos is fan control. It just doesnt work properly with Dell cards so thats a good enough reason to go with the Clevo version using a Clevo laptop.
-
You're welcome. Buy what you feel is best for your situation. Just don't feel compelled to downgrade in the name of battery life, because that's not really necessary with the right system.
Did you know that we get more than 4.5 hours of battery in the M18x? It's true. Switching to the HD 3000 IGP, turning off eye candy and selecting a power saving profile I generally see 4:45. I just came home from a business trip on Friday with two flight segments totaling about 5 hours in the air. I watched 2 full length movies on the M18x and still had about 20 minutes of battery life to spare.
You can get an M18x starting at around $1999. Some folks find the size of the M18x too much, but I would be very unhappy with a smaller laptop. (That's just me, though.) -

I wish the reseller I'm contacting from Clevo didn't overcharge for the 7970m, they are charging $100 more than the GTX 675m when AW is charging $150 less than the GTX 675m.... If they price it at $100 less even then I will buy this in a heartbeat with Ivy Bridge and a P150em probably. I like the new keyboards and simple look. Hope they drop the prices though -_-

Man, I'd love to get them running in the R2. I was really hoping the new GPUs were going to be 75W cards
Then I could really flex the 7 series muscle.
**EDIT: Wait is the 7970 a 75W card? If it is, I may be inclined to sell my 6990s and 5870s to get a set. What will the 7990 go for? Will there be a 7990? -
The 7970m could be the flagship and there could be a 7950m I reckon.
-

From what I have read its 100w.

It's as powerful as a GTX 570 desktop card, possibly GTX 580 if you OC the 7970m 20%; you really need more power than that O_O? If you SLi these it will be as fast as a GTX 680, maybe faster rofl.
-
I really don't know why the AMD is cheaper, but in germany the GTX 675M costs 190€ more than the GTX 660M. The AMD is 50€ more expensive than the 675M. So i think someone made a mistake @ AW, so they will correct it in a few days and the AMD will be more expensive than all Nvidias. But i wish for you all the best, that this won't come true!
-
Remove the 675M from the equation.
AMD 7970m available for buy
