i find it dificult to believe the 7970m is twice as fast as 6990m. it's specs do not suggest it.
19% on the mhz and 14% more shaders. theoretically a 33% increase in fps, not 100% increase.
m18x with 6990m at 825 core xfire;
EDIT below; ran the bench after resuming from sleep state so drivers are finicky, re-ran it after reboot.

Argh, die shrink + completely different architecture than the 5000 and 6000 series GPU's( the tessellation numbers really emphasis this). an m15x owner also has very similar results with 7970

last true generational leap in notebook world was with 8800m gtx. -

Seriously, you have trouble believing the benchmarks at stock clocks? Just wait till there is some app and driver support and i'm able to overclock this beast...and the 7970m actually beats your Xfire system...you'd think there was a conspiracy or something
Anyways, i ain't Jesus, I don't work on faith...2 forum members here will be receiving their 7970's this week. There will be some correlation of the facts soon enough
EDIT: Table21, another member on this forum is scoring 5300 3dmark11's with a last gen i7, and i've seen another bench of a 5400 3dmark11. Notebookcheck has rated the 7970m above xfire 6990's and SLI 580m
ITS A FREAKING CONSPIRACY I TELL YOU!! -
28nm is the next generational leap.
It's hard to accept that your M18x is suddenly outdone by a single mobile card. Is that it? Are you experiencing shrinkage? -
desktop 6870 vs 7870
AnandTech - Bench - GPU12
BF3 maxxed at 1080p sees a 31% increase
crysis warhead bench maxxed at 1080p sees a 31% increase.
at least by these two important gaming benchmarks performance is inline with the paper specs. -
Look Slick got the card from Area 51 where Dell has been sneaking random bits of tech from the aliens for their Alienware range. I know because I shot JFK with the camera I filmed the moon landings with after I paid the royal family to have Diana killed
Anyways back on topic who here wants to see The Beaver get himself a 60Hz screen and a shiny 7970m to play with? -
i think the beaver needs one!. this nutty woman wants 2 in an m18x
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
widezu...you know you wanttttt it
-
I want 2 in my R2!
-
Me me me! since im sure you will try to crank up the card as much as you can
-
no need to get hostile, children!
desktop 6870 xfire handily defeats a single gtx 580. even xfire 6850 puts out more fps than the 580. desktop 580 is faster than 7970m.
AnandTech - Bench - GPU11
i'll stand by my analysis that 7970m is roughly 30% faster than 6990m unless some actual game benchmarks come in (or since its early how about some good old youtube video proof that it's twice as fast as 6990m in games?) or gets professionally reviewed. -

I think what's happening is this, amd has crazy good mid range desktop chips (which are becoming our high end mobile chips = 7970m), and for this gen nvidia is tackling efficiency crown with low voltage chips (like 640m 650m) and performance crown with 680, neither are the cards we need actually, therefore amd looks like it will take mobile gaming crown this gen.. (this is a very flawed and nonsense analysis, but still something)
anyway, Slick is showing very very well a stock 7970m IS better than crossfire 6990m in benches, and looks like in the games as well, which crossfire system can pull of 60fps maxed bf3 (on STOCK)? -
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
looks like several of you guys will be getting 7970's in the very near future...some of you as early as tomorrow.
So i've decided to write an install guide. Will be up tomorrowNo point you going through 6 hrs like i did lol

Offtopic: why you have changed your 2920XM on 2820QM? -
^^ preparation for ivy bridge?!!
Slick, you got serious intel from Dell, did you hear of a bios update or anything??
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
The 2920xm is a fun CPU. I had my fun, overclocked it, ran some benches, but i hated the heat. I hated monitoring it. The m17x's aren't really meant to handle the heat that the 2920 brings. You can do it, but regularly hitting high 80's celsius, and 90's was a headache for me
The 2820 runs cold and requires zero maintenance and is almost as fast stock.
I figure its time for someone else to have fun with it
AND...i'm pretty sure it will take more than a bios update for IVY...you'll need the h77 chipset...we run h67's in the R3 -
-
I agree the 7970m is incredible, but Arhhh has a valid point. 100% increase on two benchmarks (heaven & mark11) do not necessarily correlate to a 100% increase across the board. I haven't looked at the anabdtech benches, but if they show 30% between a desktop 6870 and 7870 that may be closer to the real truth.
Still Slickdude is correct, there will be plenty of proof soon. Still I have no doubt his benches are valid, I don't see a respected member squandering his rep for a few days of e-fame. -
SlickDude, can you point me - where i can buy it today at 24th april?
-
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
glad to see you got everything working slick. Sad to hear about the 2920xm though, doesn't seem like the ivy bridge will be any better thermal wise anyway.
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
and, i never claimed you would get 100% more fps. I've only showed what my computer with a 7970m produced on those benches
This is what i have got through fraps ... it's hardly scientific nor empirical, but i'm impressed:
Skyrim (1080p, ULTRA, 4xaa, 16xaf)
walking around Skyrim countryside at 75+ fps
walking around Skyrim White Run 70-80 fps
BF3 ULTRA 4xmsaa 1080p 50+fps
The witcher 2...1080p, everything on except uber sampling...50+fps
-
Slick! Do you have Crysis2 on that machine, can you try it?? I am willing to bet it will go +50fps with high res textures + dx11 + ultra
-
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
I could sell my 6990m for some money, not sure what I could get for it though.
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
EDIT: just played through 10 mins...Crysis 2, high res texture pack installed, DX11, ULTRA
Grazzt, it was fluid!! Don't know the name of the level but my objective was:
defend Airlift Evac site:
Hold back the Ceph attack
never dropped below 40fps...normally between 45-53 fps -
and for reference (it's 1920x1200p though, not 1920x1080p so pretty close)
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
Never dropped below 45fps. Everything enabled except uber sampling
my method is hardly scientific, but its hard to compare to those benches cause we don't know what they did in the test
Is there a standardized Witcher 2 test? i'd love to compare some results -
Looking at the chart i posted, you are not missing much power compared to the Best cards available on desktops right now. -

MAN, you guys all owe me big -

oh yeah i forgot you have the dreaded 1600x900 screen
, my bad.
. And ETA is either Thursday or the next Tuesday, so finger crossed
Hey I would rep you again as soon as I can lol, how about free massage? No one can resist free massage right? =) -

graz'zt you preorderd videocard from upgradeyourlaptop?

wOO ALREDY HAVE 800 dOLARS WATING THE GTX 680M AND LETS SEE WICH IS BETTER THE 680M OFR 7970M
WILL THE IVY BRIDGE WILL SUPPORTS THE R3? -

edit: looks like their numbers are very similar to slicks numbers. -
but their fps benches are ridiculous, which 6990m can do 70 fps on metro 2033?? even oc'ed overvolted can it be possible?? -
-
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
Edit: "In the table below, which comes from the press kit from AMD, you see the frame rates associated with these games and the scores in 3DMark."
looks like its AMD's numbers and not the reviewers -
I was dumb enough to call Dell for a 7970m card.
They were like...buy the machine and you'll get the card. -
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
Just gotta give Another shout out to slick for his testing. I have seen links to this thread at overclock.net and a few other places. Great job once again my friend.
