The black was tempting, but I'm much happier with my silver after seeing it in person.
I'm sure the red is the same though, the pictures don't do justice.
-
-
Eh, went with black. Silver looks to busy for me...and the red was just too...red.
-
Red all the way! If your buying a full on laptop then you might as well get something that stands out.. besides.. red makes it go faster! Honest!
-
since black is a fingerprint magnet and silver isn't, there really isn't a choice in my opinion.
-
I've seen all three and the I know it's a matter of preference but I think in order of looks it would be black > red > silver and then the opposite order for fingerprint attraction.
-
Even if black attracts fingerprints, it looks a hell of a lot better than silver and especially red. The red looks like it belongs on a cheap netbook and the silver doesn't quite look right with this design. The black fits the aggressive angles of the M17x and gives it that stealthy/sports car look.
-
In defense of silver, it is not so silver as the Alienware site makes it look. It's much more of a gray fleck like.... a moon rock, in the neighborhood of gun grey. I polled 3 alien Greys that came to my house last night and all agreed the Lunar Shadow was their pick and the laptop they would want to be captured with
-
Yeah, I had black and red and went with silver this time
Love black systems, but the silver is just kick a$$ on the M17x -

the silver does look pretty good
try it with the teal lights, I like to think of it as a "glacial blue" - if you have seen glaciers you would understand -
I wish there is transparent clear... xD
-
Does the silver coloured m17x get scratches or other wear and tare marks easy?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
it can get scratched but hides it MUCH better
-
Yes silver is the best choice, hard to see scratches and finger smudges.
-
i preferred black and i have seen them all
-

Great to see that most people that hav seen 3 colours prefer black. I also prefer black but a seriously had trouble not ordering the silver one.
-
Its a tough call, make no mistake of that..partially the reason to why this thread has been revived several times.
Black looks slick and more aggressive, while silver sports a slightly more futuristic style at the cost of losing some intimidating qualities, while being able to deal with scratches/smudges better. -
-
Black, I think that if you took a survey you would find that it is the most popular.
-
-

It is also fun looking like a mbp on super steroids
-
eww i would never go silver, it looks like road kill.
-
silver, unless you enjoy your beautiful machine being covered in fingerprints all the time.
-
i got silver cuz i like the black on silver look
-
Black is so common for AW now.. Silver rocks!
-
Black = street stealth
Silver = classic style
Red = pimp my ride
I went with Silver, and it hides fingerprints like no one's business and everyone who sees it is like "whoa check that out". Heck, if I'm going to drop 3 grand on a machine its nice to have people recognize the sacrifice you made for it.
And as for the above comments, they are tongue in cheek, please, no flames -
2. do you own a black m17x? You actually like your fingerprint magnet? -
silver - flashy, doesn't show fingerprints, scratches, etc.
-
Because I did, and never had any problems with fingerprints.
Maybe it's probably only a problem with people with bad hygiene? (read; unable to wash their hands after eating crisps etc.). -
I have owned the silver and red and my vote is RED FTW!!! Black looks too plain for an alienware imho. The red is a very rich looking red and says HELLO! The silver one I owned really didn't do it for me.....yomv
-
Totally agree with you, Red yield HELLO IM HERE, LOOK AT ME, I AM A ALIENWARE MACHINE !!
I will get a red one by the way -
I will go for a Silver one this time, not that black was a wrong choice, just want to have another colour. -
for the black owners, is this true that it's a fingerprints magnet?
-
If works for you, i saw a video where M17x black seems to be horrible dirty with fingerprints and maybe biological fluids from the owner
; i think this thread must be renamed and put on it the Red option
-
I saw that same video, so before I got my old Black M17x, I was concerned about this aswell, bu mine never ever was as dirty as that Black one!
So I can boldly say; if you touch a Silver (or even a Red one for what that matters) with the greasy/dirty hands that person had, the outcome will be the same... -
My black wasn't bad as far as finger prints ...
I am a prettty clean guy... The silver was ok but if i was to do it a 3 time i would get black -
I love the black but I'm thinking of switching to silver for my replacement. -
Black for me
-
-
You won't be disappointed.
-
Silver all the way
in most picture I've seen of black it does show finger prints even some of the professional pics I can see smudged finger prints. Of course it also depends on how keen you are with details. If your like me and notice the smallest things then the slightest smudges that show up on the black are going to drive you nuts -
I've been following threads on this forum for a while, and this thread is the one that enticed me to post for the first time!
I'm getting an m17x when the 5970cf come out in silver because:
- scratches are less visible (will look new for a long time, with minor abuse)
- Fingerprints aren't visible
- More distinct than black
- Less pimpy than red
So silver is the way to go for me. and since i play in the dark most of the time, it won't matter if its red, silver or black since alienfx will take over the show... -
If red were an option I would have taken red because I think it's the most beautiful colour of the three. I chose black because it looked nicest on the pictures. It actually looks real different in real life than in the pictures. Personally I don't like shiny surfaces but after seeing the silver one, I think it looks gorgeous. I still prefer black, though. I never touch the lid itself so there are no fingerprints are there, because the fingerprint attracting quality, IMHO, is the only drawback of this awesome system.
-
Silver is the best as it is so beautiful to behold with blue eyes
Beside it is still black under the lid(the area around the keyboard and LCD screen).
-
I saw a black on display at Best Buy. It was... boring! I know a lot of people are saying the stealth look is good. Why buy a laptop with flashy speakers and LED's if you want to hide the thing?!
-
I own a black one now that is being replaced. For the replacement I chose Silver.. Here is why... You spend 95% of the time with the notebook open looking at the black palm rest, keyboard, touch control stip and screen. It gets really boring to then close your laptop and have one solid boring color take over the whole laptop. There's no break up. I think looking at it from the user point of view, the small silver outline along the sides and bottom add a nice touch to the machine and breaks things up a bit. From an onlooker point of view, the silver looks great as again, there is some break up from the back door lid, which compliments the design and lines of the computer. Also, the M17x is anodized aluminum, take advantage... Do you want it to look like the same material any M15 or M11 owner could get, no. Aluminum is Silver, go with silver. Red is just too loud for me. Obviously it's all about personal taste. Added bonus of silver have already been mentioned: Less fingerprints and less noticable scratches (and I have plenty from the Dell tech to prove it lol). Also the following vid just did it for me.. 2:44 - 3:30

I thought about the silver and red the went with black. I have zero regrets.
The top does gather fingerprints with ease but they can be removed. -

I have black and I regret not getting it in silver. I wish I could trade in the shells for silver.
-
i have black and now when i saw good pictures of the red i am kiiiind of regretting not getting it, but i think it's just a case of buyer's remorse...
i know red is too flashy, but now when i have the black i kind of want the red -

You can always get 100 dollars. A red alienware M17x...not so much.
