I would agree, but sadly AUS Dell won't let you Haggle at all, as i said in a Previous post its all or nothing with them here. I wish i could avoid returning my laptop to get my money back just to reorder it, But sadly i probably will be stuck doing it.

if I get a Directx 11 Mutli-gpu laptop I'll be happy. Otherwise you can keep with the 'wait until x' cycle forever. At some point you need to draw the line and just say no to sub 20% performance upgrades. It took alienware almost 3-4months to shove two 5870's into a M17x, and they don't have the TDP or power draw the 480 is rumored to have.
this is exactly what I was trying to avoid, and so far so good. If I comes down to this however, I'm not sure I'll follow through. If I can't get the 5870's, it might be an indication to just upgrade later (to some nvidia equivalent maybe?) -
Tell this to all those who rushed from 4870s to 5870s screaming wildly, hehehe.
I've drawn my line right after the 280s to 4870s replacement.
Don't see why I need more power when there isn't even a tendency for more demanding games, since most game makers are moving to consoles (even Blizzard is hiring new crew for that purpose). Bottom line, in a year-two from now there will be too few titles that a CF 4870/285 SLI can't handle. And just because those few will make couple of demanding but averagely-rated (and not even worthy of wasting your time and money) games, it doesn't justify selling my current rig and buying a new one every 3-6 months.
Of course, there is that itchy-mitchy rush (that some cover with a nice word - "benchmarking" need
) for the best and newest gear. But Alienware is my dream come true and I don't wanna ruin the entire feeling by replacing the system every few months, it will make it cheap and uninteresting anymore, like replacing a toothpaste.
Of course, I'll upgrade the system down the road some day to the best components, but when it's more or less needed for work or gaming, not yet.
-
I would upgrade myself if the parts weren't so horrible pricey in the spare parts department.
-
I'd do that as well. But replacing the whole system feels somewhat wrong to me. I didn't want to abandon the R1 in the first place, but it was having the horrible stuttering problems and R2 was the only remedy at that time. Still, looking at two systems on my table felt cheap, really cheap.
I almost sold the R2 after that. -

Nice, looking forward to your benches and comparisons between your 4870's and 5870's, +rep awaits. BTW, I know it's a lot of hassle but have you considered swapping your 820QM between both systems for accurate comparisons between the 4870's and 5870's?Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -

Wow! By next Friday we will have some benches on this!

I won't open up the new machine but I did think about the CPU issue. What I decided to do is ramp up the antialiasing and anisofiltering for the games I test so that they become GPU limited at 1200p. That should eliminate the CPU factor for the most part.
I got NBD now so typically boxing only takes 2-3 days max so I'm hoping to have it by Tuesday or Wednesday the latest. -
Cant wait to see some numbers on the Xfire 5870s ...
-
Wow! Fast and Furious, lol!
We are all ears....erm...I mean eyes, in this case. -
BTW here's the games I plan to benchmark and the way I'm going to test them. Suggestions are welcome:
1. Battlefield BC2 in DX 10 and 11 using FRAPS. I'll then plot a graph over time and compare both cards. Ideally I'll pick a mode + single player map so that I can reproduce the environment as closely as possible.
2. Dirt 2 both dx 10 and 11.
3. Left 4 Dead 2 using a co-op game recording.
4. Batman Arkham Asylum benchmark
5. GTA IV benchmark + free roaming in a certain part of the map.
6. Metro 2033
7. GRID or Toca racecar driver..haven't decided if I'll do those yet.
I've also got Street Fighter IV, Frontlines Fuel of War and a bunch of other games available to me but I figured i"d pick the most popular ones. -
BOXING STAGE 2NDED!! HOLY COW!!

Did you get next day too???Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
YES free NBD!
-
Nice to see you guys getting your orders ahead of your EDD! Gives me some hope, that I will have mine before my EDD also.
-
s, I just checked and is still in production. I am so jealous!!!
-
Sweet! I wonder if Achilles hit boxing yet since we ordered the same day.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
I take it you guys put your orders the same day I did, last Monday? Mine better fricken change because I leave a week from Monday and I want it before I leave
-
I put my order in almost immediately after they were released. -
My inner pessimist won't let me be excited until it's on my desk, working 100%
. I'm also hoping to scrounge up a few monitors from friends to test out eyefinity. Not something I'd use a lot, but I know a few people are curious if it works.
-
Joker do you remember approx. what time that was? j/w
-
Around noon. -
I'm in the boxing stage as well!
-
I just checked and mine is in boxing also.
Hopefully our laptops will reach the US facility tomorrow for final boxing on Sunday, and shipping to us on maybe Monday or Tuesday. Otherwise, they will just be sitting in China on Sunday waiting to ship.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
IF ANYONE HAS MULTIPLE MONITORS TEST FOR EYEFINITYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
-
I have two monitors, but not three. One of them is a Dell 30in. I will see how it drives that monitor on full resolution at 2560x1600.
-
I was waiting for the "My $6000 laptop melted, help!".
-
Joker, can you please try multiplayer with 32 players?
That would be awesome to see, cos I heard BC2 is quite heavy in dx11 multiplayer. Thanks a lot in advance!!!

Aristotelhs2060 Notebook Virtuoso
any news about the CF5870 kit release date?
-
Time for a BUMP.
Some people should be getting there new CF AW's tomorrow and I want some benchmarks! -
Mine will probably ship out by tomorrow and get here Tuesday. Some Europeans should receive theirs tomorrow though.
-
I wonder if the HS and pipes will be different? Also, am very interested in comparing the temps.

I hope by at least Wednesday this week will have some Vantage scores and even 3DMark ones too...why not.
I'd like to see the real difference between the 4870's and 5870's first in Vantage mainly....Refresh me on this, what was the highest Vantage score in a M17x with XF 4870's? -
TheCodeBreaker managed about 15k vantage. But his was an extreme overclock with likely a lot of tweaks. The average score with a 920xm is about 12.5-13k with overclocks hitting 14k. My system will have an i820 so the CPU and overall vantage score will be lower than a 920xm but the GPU score will do all the talking. I'm guessing it should hit about 14k default and 16-17k overclocked. -
Nvm., found it out in the lounge thread. Seems like 5870s run way hotter than the 4870s, even in M17X. I'm getting scared when mem hits 80C in games on my cards, lol. Would be really worried to see a 90+.
-
So has anyones shipped yet? I just called and it's still in boxing
-
due to sum balls up!! my laptop order has been cancelled due to some doink at dell.... now waiting on email to see why my order has been put on hold/cancelled.
and its only me its adminsitritive not technical incase any of you start thinking its parts related.
im sad now
-
Needless to say if for any reasons they announce and R3 or a refreshed version of the M17X in a few weeks at E3, I will be very very mad...
-
Don't worry won't happen. Another GPU upgrade is next for the M17x then a refresh with the release of Sandy Bridge.
-
How can you be sure r3 is not coming.
-
These were my initial thoughts but Joker mentioned in a post that there will be a refresh over the summer and that gets me worried since he usually has insider information but I agree there is no reason to have a refresh now and Sandy Bridge refresh won't be until at least Q1 2011.
-
I don't know of any refresh over the summer. The only thing I expected was the 480M single card. I was hoping at one point there would be a modified R2 with better cooling and bigger PSU but that was just a far fetched hope. -
Because there is nothing to refresh. They are working on the 480M upgrade.
-
Ahhh, it was hope...
But I agree we are pretty safe from a refresh on the M17X until Q1 2011.
On the other hand the M15X and M11X could both get refresh very very soon. -
I have deleted several posts in this thread so let's stay on topic, please.
-
Nobody knows for sure what's next for the m17x, if it's even called that. It's all just a bunch of the usual guesses about parts and dates.
-
Hey Joker any news on your shipping date? Your system is still in production?
-
I was hoping it would ship out today but no such luck. It's still in boxing. Maybe by the end of the day today it will be updated to shipping. -
Has anyone's shipped yet?
