Hah, Yeah I'm trying to get my Replacement like that except I'm going to buy my part/parts if they refuse to give me the 5870s for free. Its only 1500 Dollars, Im just made of money. Lol.
-
Im just excited to get my R1 replaced with an R2 unit, I know I can upgrade on my own, it will be awhile till I see my unit anway; so im not to concerned with the 5870's right now. But will definately be interested in them when I get home from Iraq.

Aristotelhs2060 Notebook Virtuoso
I was just informed the machine is in Los Angeles. Yesterday it was in Shangai and final destination is Greece where i live. Damn everything goes through Dell US. loool
-
Aristotelhs2060 Notebook Virtuoso
well they didnt even give me the option to pay for upgrades. this was their policy. CF 5870 was removed as incompatible (at least thats what i was told) anyway so it was not an option even if i wanted to pay or not. -
They have told me many times they will not allow me to pay for upgrades on a replacement.. I have asked and have always been denied.. When they replace they just place it with comparing it to the original order...
-
that is exactly what they told me when I asked for an upgrade and I was willing to pay.
-
Aristotelhs2060 Notebook Virtuoso
i dont know if they really lose or gain money from this. they hope you will buy a new machine or that you will buy extra parts? this seems risky as someone may not want to buy extra parts.
-
They won't let you pay and upgrade, replacement is a replacement and if you're unhappy about the specs - talk to the person who authorized the replacement in the first place.
-
If that is the case i'll simply ask for a full refund.
-
If you are wanting to get a different config then refund is always the better option.
-
Aristotelhs2060 Notebook Virtuoso
-dells spare part facility completely flooded so they are having a ton of trouble sorting out parts-
this is from a friend of mine in US with direct contact with Dell. -
Ahahahahaha dell dell dell. What will we do with you?
-
Hahahaha, that's great.
-
Anyone hit boxing yet? I'm still in build.
-
I'm still in build too, would be nice to hear if anyone's AW moved up
-
lordqarlyn Global Biz Consultant
yep. still in build... -
I am sure I am crashing their servers left and right with my rapid-refresh over the status page.
-
I'm in build as well.
-
Me too... It's lasting forever...
-
I just hope they don't offer some M17x R3 or something at E3 ill be pissed lol
Mine is still in production. -
I am counting on it lol
-
If they do announce a new M17X at E3 I will be pissed too and I will cancel my order but I have strong doubts.
I believe the next M17X refresh should be early next year with the new Intel chipset. -
im pretty sure they wont....
1 they have 5870cf = fastest dual gpu laptop avaialable
2 ok they could put usb3 but its nowt to shout about at the moment
3 nvidia 400 series gpu aint gonna happen in m17x r1, r2 we wont have r3
so slim its daft and pointless putting 1x 4oo series gpu with 2gb ddr5 not going to see anything great... only scorched lap
as good as it gets for the mo with laptop computing till at least a year.
just my hunch
-
I doubt they will have a r3, they probably will just showcase the r2 with 2*5870m
-
R3 will include:
- USB 3
- Crossfire 5970
- Nvidia 480M SLI
- Sata 6gb
- Sandy Bridge
I would not expect this before Q1 2011. -
a single GTX480M with 2GB DDR5 would be a viable single GPU alternative to CF 5870's acutally. Assuming you believe the reports that they're a fermi hybrid and is more than a superclocked G92 update. Don't forget that the 5870's only difference from the 4870 performance wise is a 150mhz core clock and 112mhz ram clock(at half the bus width). GTX280M's are practically as fast as the 4870's were *and* you get physix support. Dell's choice in Which graphics cards it offers should be evidence enough that it provides selection whether it makes sense or not.
-
We still have no proof of any performance reports for the GTX480M. So far it's just speculation and it might turn out to be complete crap for notebooks...
And there are more difference in between the 5870 and 4870:
- 150mhz core
- 112mhz ram
- 7.1 HDMI Audio (5870) vs 5.1 on (4870) - That is not to forget especially if you use your PC to play blu-ray, etc...
- Direct X 11 (5870) vs 10.1 (4870)
So yes it's not a revolution but it's quite some good improvements in between the two cards. Also, I am sure we can expect a 5970 by year's end.
Crap, am I starting to be an ATI fan after 12 years of being an Nvidia one..... -
Does Dell give a discount for a returning customer? I wanna buy CF 5870... ^_^
-
What do you mean by returning customer?
-
I already bought a system from Dell like twice... Now I wanna buy a specific part just to upgrade my R2, do you think they'll give me discount for CF 5870?
-
No.
10char -
They probably won't discount it and as far as I know the CF5870 are not yet available for an upgrade, probably soon though.
-
Damn! I wanna upgrade mine... >.<
-
Yeah, good idea.
-
Refund is only possible if within that 30 days period or 21 days after invoice date, I always forget.
-
My M17x is faulty...
-
Wait and see how things go, but probably waiting for at least the Nvidia "option" to decide fairly between 5870 and whatever the NV chip is. Also disappointed that there isn't USB 3 yet - unsure whether I could live with that being an expresscard thing or not, but leaning to "not" at this point.
Hope to see how the 5870's perform to refine this decision of course
-
BTW... How's the performance of CF 5870? Review pls... ^^
-
Just talked to a Dell rep. They do not have the 5870 in stock. nor was it coming up in the system. Keep in mind this was spare parts at DELL. They only had the 5870 available for the desktop. The 4870 on the other hand is available for purchase.
-
Nothing is said and done yet, however, I'm within the 21 days and have a RMA number and UPS slip for my 4870's in exchange for the online configurator's price for 5870s. I'll be buying the CF 5870's for $375 after my rep approves a $100 coupon hopefully. After which I'll return the 4870's for a credit of $240, which means I will have paid $35 for Crossfire 5870's, had 0 downtime because of a silly return/repurchase.
spare parts usually doesn't get new parts, those are held for new customers before they're released as upgrade parts. It always works like this.
1) why do we need a 5GB interface connection? Heck, even USB 1.1 is enough for nearly everything we use today except maybe SSD devices or HDD backup devices.
2) USB3 won't be around for long if Intel has it's way, it'll be at best an intermediate specification for lightpeak (which will be 10GB and be able to connect to USB 3 ports) -
waiting on the outcome of the new crossfire 5870's. things should get interesting once again....
-
Monday will be very interesting for me. Assuming there's a short to 0 delay in ordering the 5870's, I may be the first one to have a CF 5870 system.
-
I'm feeling the excitement a bit now. At first it was meh but now that I'm 4 days into production, I'm hoping to hit boxing this weekend and have the system by next week. I gotta get rid of this current R2 soon. -
How did you manage this? Were your 4870's faulty or something? Sorry if you already posted it somewhere and I missed it, I'm just curious since this sounds like an ideal situation
-
Why do we need 5870s in CF
Why do we need SSD drives
Why do we need RGB LED screens
Why do we need USb 3
Because it's the lastest, fastest, best at the moment.
I want USB 3 so I can have faster data transfers
USB 1.1 sucks big time for data backups -
i know that's right!! i would have got this thing...benched it for about 2 weeks, then got rid of it...damn shame...
and how much you asking for your r2?
very nice!
-
$2150 shipped via fedex. If you're interested drop me a PM. -
They work just fine! The whole point of me trying to do this is avoid the 1-2months I'd be without a computer waiting for credit, trying to rehaggle for a good price, wait for it to ship, and just generally already having the laptop I want, sans the graphics cards. I made a thread about it, but it's probably already on page 3 by now in the alienware section.
FIRST, I had the premium care support(the basic care reps I spoke to immediately denied that it could be done and said I just had to return the laptop and buy a new one)
Second, when I bought my R2, the 5870's came out 3 days after receiving my laptop. It took ~ 2days of calling different reps before I got a good one (even within 'premium care reps")
Third,The one I have now has a clear understanding of what I wanted to accomplish which was:
instead of returning a laptop that dell has to sell as used and me waiting for a new one, simply *exchange* the graphics cards with me paying the price difference since I'm within the 21 day return period anyway. After I got a good rep It really didn't take long to get some stuff emailed to me. I have in my possession an RMA number for my two 4870CF graphics cards(as well as a prepaid UPS packaging slip), and the rep is working on getting me a $100 coupon so we can use it on the 5870s(which he said will cost $375, just like in the on-line configurator). That's as far as I am so far, I don't know if we'll be able to actually order the cards but he didn't have to put me previsouly on hold to *check* for more than 2-3 minutes to make sure it was possible unlike with the basic care reps where I was on hold for upwards of 10-15minuites. He also sounded very confident that this could be done. I've learned to have reservations until I have stuff in hand, but the fact that he originally wanted me to send my 4870's back first sounds like this might be the real deal.
Basically what *should* happen is:
use the $100 coupon and buy the CF 5870 kit for $275
Send back the 4870s (which he said I would receive $240 credit for)
end up paying only $35 and 1hour down time while I switch cards
I had to spend a lot of hours on the phone with unhappy and crap reps before I got this guy, so it wasn't easy by any stretch of the imagination. -
Things will get really interesting in 9 days from now when GTX 480M SLI is showcased
-
My prediction:
Pre-E3 unveiling: OOOH man X7200 with 480 SLI! FTW! Alienware is finished and so is ATi!
During E3: They show the dx 11 heaven benchmark and again.."ooo aaaahhh..alienware is done, put a fork in it!"
Post E3: Once people receive the X7200 (esp. former AW owners). Man this machine rocks! It's everything I wanted. The screen is the best evar! The RGB LED used to burn my fragile retinas!
Few weeks later: FS: X7200. I think I'm going to get an M17x again with CF 5870 and RGB LED.
