I'm sure most of you will want to kill me for asking this question: Is crossfire or SLI really worth the €390 pricetag? I read some stuff about micro stutter or something like that when using 2 gpu's and was wondering if it wouldn't be better to keep the €390 aside for a future gpu upgrade.
I know there's no point in getting the m17x if you don't chose crossfire or sli, but as I said, I just want to know if its worth it in the long run.
Pls comment using arguments considering the cost, and actual gaming performance. I'm not a person that would buy an alienware to have the best of the best at the time of my purchase, but would rather buy it to be future proof for atleast 2-3 years and future upgrading abilaties.

I have a single 5870 system and when I play Metro 2033 with DX11 at high settings game play is barely playable. When I switch to DX10 it works fine. I'm hoping it plays better with Crossfire, if not it may not be worth it.

Hm thats weird, wasn't direct x11 suposed to be less demanding than direct x10? Anyway I guess that my initial concern was correct, namely that the first generation of direct x11 gpu's would not be able to run run direct x11 games well by the time they would become comon. (I have the same problem with my 8600m gt which was the first direct x10 card for notebooks: it can't play assassins creed with direct x10, but when I use direct x9 everything runs really smooth).

the 'benchmarks' that test tesselation have show no performance decrease, however as with such things, synthetics rarely translate to real world situations. That being said, it could be that they just focused more dev time to 10.1 than 11 assuming that not everyone will have an 11 card. Saying that though, 11.0 is very simple to use, and it would be a shame if they couldn't take the time to write it correctly.

Hello, I posted this in another thread as well but this is probably a better thread to ask this. I'm getting an Alienware m17x as a replacement for an XPS 1645 I currently have. I checked the specs list today and it appears they have upgraded me to CF 5870s. Can anyone confirm the part number with theirs? Thanks a lot! Looking forward to joining the Alienware family.

Mine has officially arrived! I'm gonna post benchmarks and temps as soon as I get off work. All I had time to do was sign for it and open the box to make sure that it was indeed inside and not a bunch of rocks... lol :D I'll be home in a couple of hours. If anyone can hook me up with a vantage key I'll run that test too.

Sorry, my friend (aren't we all friends in this context?).
I never had the chance to learn English; so, every thing I write (and type), is really and not more than improvised...
Oh! How much I wish I could pay a little more respect to the language of Shakespeare and Withman!!!
    Hope you can understand.
    Thanks!

I "manage" myself in 4 languages this way (and a little bit in another two). Maybe because I had to learn latin when I was young... (sometime in the prehistory) this help me a little.

Great success! Dell agreed to replace my dual 4870's with a single 5870. I'm so glad to be rid of all of the problems that come with crossfire/sli. Perhaps one day, I'll buy a second 5870.

I got notification my M17X R2 with CF 5870 has shipped. I am quite worried I will have to return the PC due to the upcoming 840QM and maybe the announcement of the 480M at E3.

that sounds silly imho. Unless you're dealing with extreme cards, the difference between 820 and 840 is negligible, especially during gaming.

And seriously, screw nvidia. The 480 will run so damn hot that I daresay it would be less stable simply in that regard, let alone having a far decreased lifespan.

similarly, their drivers for notebook graphics have been mediocre at best. I've never had an sli system (ive gone through dual 8700's, 8800's, 9800's and 280's) that didn't have one driver issue or many.

Conversely, catalyst 10.4 drivers (and even 10.3) have been running flawlessly for me.

dual sli 480's will probably require a different power supply or a completely new model m17x.x that, rumor has it, will no longer come in aluminum.

on the flip side, the next m17x.x models might be a single slab of machined aluminum similar to the macbook pro. this would make it the most impressive laptop ever made, but here's to hoping for that.

I agree with you, the gain in between the 820QM and 840QM is not going to be noticeable. I also agree on the analysis of ATI but I've been an Nvidia fan since the 90's and there must be the emotional part of me that wants Nvidia to become number 1 again though I know from the route they are taking that they are going to be crap for the next few years and what is sad have been crap for the past few years.
