Indeed, definitely not worth it, and I don't see how Nvidia can survive the fight against ATI with prices like that. I can't see Nvidia competing with prices like that especially when ATI probably has a similar card up their sleeves which they will release eventually and probably for much cheaper.

Either that article has its facts incorrect or Nvidia is not going to be competing on the high end market for a long time. Who really cares right now about stereoscopic 3D?

Yeah but be careful, remember when it sounds too good to be true it is...

Just the SSD with the 920XM is about $2200 and he sales the system for $2900.00

FYI: Heaven Benchmark 2.1 is out, in case anyone wants to make sure to grab that in preparation for new systems. My back and head are killing me, so I'm going to bed early, not going to stay awake long enough to install it and try it.

    See y'all tomorrow.

He got back to me pretty quickly. Seeeems legit. Told him I could only pick up and pay on spot as I want to avoid any scams. He said fine, but he'd rather deal on internet because of time restraints, but if choose to pick up at a local warehouse(said they are wholesale) and pay there then its ok.

Wholesale customized Alienware laptops with custom nameplates? Sounds pretty legit to me. Not to mention it's a $5500 setup, -10% from EPP, $-300 from the deal, $-100 from the coupon makes it out to be around $4500 still. Marked down a nice $1500+?

(Sarcasm was included in this post)

it is possible that he is legit.
people who do whole sale get parts far less than general public.
just like the few who found the 10 percent here and 300 dollars there...vs the people who dont even hit these forums and buy the machine out right at cost.

he gets the shell from AW/dell or an affiliate of them. then fills in the parts. (ssd's/memory/wifi/cpu's and a very big if on vga cards) makes a few dollars and gets known for selling real laptops.....of course...this is all speculation though. :)

This deal seems like the one I found on ebay. The one on ebay had pretty much maxed out spec for $2300 or something. They also told me it was a wholesale in some warehouse. Sounds fishy...

It was a 6 hour drive. :D And as for the deal listed at craigslist, 5870s just came out and the first batch barely made it out this week, and they are already selling it half the price? I don't know... I mean I also live in LA, if this is legit please do tell me. I would return mine and pick one up too. :D

I'm so lost as how the payment would work. They said it will take up to 15 days to ship it out meaning you pay up first then wait 15 days to pick it up or they ship it out? Hell within week of your payment they can disappear so quick.. Lol.

Not only could they disappear with your money, but meeting a stranger at a warehouse instead of meeting at somewhere more public for one thing. I'm from up in Washington where just recently we had people who did a murder and robberies through meeting people on craigslist at private places instead of public places.

    look guys...do like i do.
email the guy for a phone number
you get a number, this is a good start.
then you ask, can you visit his warehouse.
if he says sure, come on down...im going to bank a 99 percent chance that he has to be pretty close to or fully legit...you can sell refurbished or systems with miner imperfections to fall under not legit. along with stolen. (and the list is bigger, but you get the idea)
now if he says you can't see the warehouse, then look up the number he gave you to match an address. legit business's usually have numbers tied to legit companies.(speculation)
ill be in l. a. tomorrow...i might just hit him up and see. but if i cant go down and see...then i would more than likely let it go...even though it could be the deal of the century or the guy is brokering machines which would also be a valid reason for not letting you come down. i cant even go get anything from rjtech and they are like 15 minutes from here.lol

The price of the system he advertises is above $5,000.00. There is no way he can buy it for half that and sell it to you for $2,900.00 for a profit.

    scams can come from anywhere.

as for the guy who got his...he is still loading stuff up...the first set of numbers didn't look to promising....im guessing... :)

well regarding the R1 issues, the exterrior doesnt always apply to the interior. i dont have to mention what followed after those issues trying to resolve it. US customers got their replacements while people in EU were trying to convince Dell that the problem wasnt fixable. I have hunderds of other examples to describe from mine and others cases in EU. US customers take and send back machines while in EU replacements are not under return policy (even if it doesnt work at all). Thus returns for new machines are accepted in a 7 days period only plus they have to change the same part three times to accept return. Not just call and say i want to return it.

thus i dont know if Dell has something to do with the design (pure alienware project) except than putting some of its parts (like bluetooth, wireless) on the machines. Dell has the promotion part which they have greatly ruined in EU with the high prices and deficient support-sales reps.

as for the link you gave me this sounds good

    http://www.originpc.com/eon-gaming-laptop-service.asp

but i forgot this may apply to US only too.

I also read about the rumour that AW would no longer make such heavy aluminium designs (though the weight is actually a false argument since its just as heavy, or even lighter).
It would be weird for AW to go back to plastic designs while big companies like Asus and HP only just started releasing aluminium notebooks (if there's anything to be learned from apple's succes its that people like metal on the outside).

Also, after reading a few comments in this thread i'm a bit confused why most would still opt for 2 hd 5870 cards over 1 singe stable gtx 480. Sure its more bang for the buck, but when I read about people complaining about driver issues & stutter, I wonder how well CF/SLI really works...

Just like you mentioned I too have strong doubts about Alienware going to plastic on future M17X. Most major manufacturers are starting to use aluminium and everyone loves it. It would be a huge mistake to go back to plastic no matter how high end the plastic is.

Well their m11x does show a tendency towards more plastic :( But we can always hope they will keep better build quality with their more expensive models (heavy laptops like the m15x & m17x not only look good in metal, they need metal). I do not like this entire evolution with manufactuers competing so hard that they are forced to use cheap materials. All we can do is vote by purchasing the very few decent products that are still available. Though I doubt it will weigh up against the massive number of *cheaper is better* consumers.
