do only quadcore cpus have unlocked multipliers, or do they all?

no only EXTREME cpu's have them unlocked

    QX9200
    QX9300
x9100 are the only ones with unlocked multipliers

the rest of the CPU's are overclocked in BIOS

Hey I have a quick question. I am not new to the oc scene as I have a desktop water cooled running at 4.4 cpu and huge oc on the video card. I will say that I am new to the laptop oc scene. I just received my m17x and have the q9000 at 2.4 stable with a fsb oc of 1285. As we have not changed any voltages, I assume that this is ok. is this a correct assumption. I do not want to risk screwing this thing up(over heating) as it was a huge investment. any input on this would be appreciated...

2.4 is plenty safe for a Q9000. Download HW monitor though and keep an eye on your temps .

quad, not worried about the cpu as that is easy enough to change out of if something happens. more worried about the chipset. temps are excellent using everest idle at upper 40's cpu and lower 40's gpu... just not familiar with nvidia chipset fsb overclocking. i assume that would be like a 321 fsb on my foxconn black ops board... i would say that should be ok... just wanted a little reassurance i guess..

you couldn't harm the computer with FSB overclocking .... as it will just tun off....

there is always a exception but its very very rare

since we cannot control the voltage, any overclocking we do is 100% safe

It is messing with voltages that can potentially harm components

    Hi guys,

Not going to see to many T9550's in the M17x I don't think but that's what came in the Aussie version for the first week, now it's the T9600.

Have overclocked the FSB via BIOS from 1066 to 1280
Overclock is from 2.66 to 3.2GHz

Have run OCCT for a hour and it is stable and temps are good.

Will look at bumping it higher and start on the GPU's

Old T9600 caps out for me at 3.12ghz. Any higher is unstable. Btw I ran OCCT GPU: MemTest and I get 1280 errors after 10 passes. Is this normal? What do you guys get running that?

    t9600 is running @ 3.3 with Clauss

try the new BIOS you should get a higher over clock easy

I used Nvidia System Tools to OC my 2x 280 SLI all work find onlye when i reboot, the M17x freez... every time

the problem is Nvidia System Tools. It crash the system by loading any profil no matter what clock values . even by 1 mhz it freez after reboot m17x

    i test Ntunes 6.03 and 6.05 with drivers 1.86

FSB now at 1333 and CPU at 3.33GHz

OCCT for 30 mins no problems and temps between 70-75c

    Pretty happy with that.

Dell used to feature BIOS overclocking in many of thir XPS laptops but tisnce thought bought Alienware, no more.

How high can an Dual-Core X9100 3.06GHz Processor be overlcloecked to on an M17X?

Do the other Alienware laptop models also feature BIOS overclocking?

    Thanks for the info :)

Yes. For non extreme processors you have the option to tweak FSB and Mem clock in the bios only.

For extreme processors the above is open in addition to multipliers so you can OC in the BIOS with all chips to a certain point.

Thank you very much for the info. Do any other Alienware models like the Area-51 m15x also feature these BIOS overclocking options or just the M17X? A 15" screen size would be ideal for me :)

That I would not know as I never owned them. From what I have read, alienware wasn't to big on that and ppl would use setfsb to achieve over clocks.. Maybe someone that has owned one of these systems can chime in.

Hi everyone! I'm trying to oc my p8700cpu and so far @2.93 (fsb set to 1240 in bios). Occt ran ok for 1 hour also the temps are normal (40-60c). Noticed a HUGE boost in some games (Total war went from 7fps on ultra to 25 almost playable :) ). But for some reason 3dmar06 wouldn't start showing the following message - "COM surrogate has stopped working". I reinstalled 3dmark but it's not fixed. Do you know what might be the reason and how to fix it?
    Thanx!

A few others are encountering this message. If you do a google search for 'COM Surrogate 3DMARK06' as well as with Vantage you will see recent returns. Not sure what is causing the issue - I too am seeing this. At first it was just 06 wouldn't run, now Vantage fails as well. Vantage shows a 'SystemInfo' error though. Same issue I believe. Just can't pin down what the cause is or a work-around.

I even tried a factory restore. Installed only 06 and Vantage and both still tossed an error.

I ended up uninstalling both. Figured all would be resolved once I install Win7 when its released - at least that is what I want to believe... lol.

We can continue the COM SURROGATE ERROR discussion HERE (where I've added my notes/thoughts on the issue). Don't want to detract from the OCing topic. Thanks.

EDIT: I think I pinned down the cause. Nero is somehow involved. Aikimox see the thread I linked to, steps I took to resolve are there.

Currently @3.06Ghz, looking good. Will go higher but I'm worried, how risky is it for CPU/mobo? How safe is the FSB oc'ing (what's the limit? I'm @1279, will it go all the way up to 1333 without permanent damage to the board and cpu?)

But knowing you have an extreme processor must feel better even if its a little older.

btw. Are they still releasing new dual cores? Is there gonna be a new extreme dual core or are they done with that?

Does anyone have a problem after installing Windows 7? My m17x wont OC anymore using BIOS by changing FSB bus from 1066 to 1275. I checked using La....somthing cant remember the name lol....tool and normally when I had Vista it would show the CPU clock 2.4 GHz correctly OC from 2 GHz. Now it just hovers around 1.7 and lower.

    Any suggestions/advice please!!

Ok, will do. But I want to get this right, when OC would my CPU clock speed stays at a constant 2.4 GHz or does it depend on load. I am asking this because in Vista, the CPU clock would stay constant at 2.4 GHz regardless.

    Thks!

No it should down-clock when idle to save power. If it didn't do that in Vista it means an app, which should show up in task manager, was causing it to work constantly.

Hey guys i was wondering whats the max temperature you want to run your CPU at. I got mine to boot up at 3.06GHZ and and one core reached 83C on load i didnt do a 3D mark 06 at that speed but i did one at 2.93GHz and got 15181 3DMarks and the temp had reached around 80c and below

Keeping it below 90c is good. Once you get above that you may start to see some down-clocking. What happens when you try to push the CPU above 3.06Ghz?
