Let me explain my issue. I had it installed before, but whenever I ran it I instantly got a bluscreen..so I tried to uninstall it and it never uninstalled. I get that progress bar flash for a second and then nothing. If I try to reinstall over the old one I get an error saying that it is already installed and I need to remove it before installing the new one.

Tried that before a few times and it said I didn't have access rights to delete it or something...just tried it again and it worked :| Dunno why, anyways thanks dude. I'll try to reinstall and give it a shot.

EDIT: Now whenever I run the installer it says "do you want to completely remove the application and all of it's features?" Then I click yes and it says that the operation is only valid for programs currently installed..:S

Yeah...they really are pretty terrible :/. It doesn't even show up in the add/remove programs list either..I am getting the interposer tomorrow for the 2nd HDD so I guess I'll just throw in my other hard drive and set up raid since that requires a fresh install...thanks for trying man.

In other news, I'm sitting on my front porch and it's 12:48am and a raccoon just walked by no more than 20 feet away from me . scared the crap out of me.

If someone hasn't mentioned already... The Alienware M17x hdmi port works in HDMI 1.2 mode when using the integrated graphics card and in HDMI 1.3a mode when using the discrete graphics card(s). I believe the most important difference (for me) between these two modes is that in HDMI 1.3a you can hookup a WQXGA (2650X1600) monitor like the Dell Ultrasharp 3008wfp. I found this out after calling Alienware support.

    just my 2 cents.

have you actually hooked up a 30" and used at that full resolution? I ask because this has been discussed and never verified as far as I know. The other difference is the audio formats supported, I just made a thread about the HDMI of the M17x. In the comprehensive specifications manual it just says 1.2, so unless you have actually done it yourself with a 30", I would not trust the rep on the phone.

The rep I spoke to didn't know which versions of hdmi the laptop supports and had to ask someone higher up.

I haven't tested myself since I don't have a monitor to test against. My current monitor (Dell Ultrasharp 3007wfp) has a Dual-Link DVI connection. Hopefully, Dell will makes a cable that converts Dual-Link DVI to HDMI or DisplayPort and supports 2650X1600 resolution.

BTW, if someone here would like to swap a Dell Ultrasharp 3008wfp for a pretty new and hardly used Dell Ultrasharp 3007wfp plus cash, please contact me.

hdmi will work if it truly is hdmi 1.3 as this can carry the dual link signal, just make sure your cable is compatible (but I think cable is the same for all versions and that is just marketing BS)

i really wish i could buy one right now (sigh)... i was gonna get one by next month but i think i'll wait for the price to come down (gotta pay some bills), hopefully q1 or even q4. til then i was thinking about getting an hp dv7-1245dx and since i trust all of yall alienware gurus, i was wondering if this was a decent gaming lappy for $579 (refurb).

    Specs:
    AMD Turion X2 RM-72
4GB DDR2 up to 8GB (btw idk the chipset but can i upgrade to ddr3?),
ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics RS780M,
1x320GB HDD (up to 2 drives)

I plan on playing mostly CIV4, COD, GTA (especially SA and VC), Oblivion, The Sims. Will that processor be good enough? GPU? Is the GPU upgradable?

    Thanks for any help.

    Hey all,

I've been told before that I could use an international credit card to order through Dell's US site. I just wanted to know... do they ship to the billing address? Or could you input where you want the unit to be delivered?

How about that Microcenter deal? Would they accept an international credit card? Will they ship the unit to the billing address or would I be able to Input the address?

I also read that some people who ordered computers from dell/alienware had their systems held up because they used an international credit card. Only when they received an email stating that they send a photocopy of it did the system ship

I'm assuming this will also affect me, so I wanted to ask, what would be the requirements for international orders? Where I live, we can't order the M17x here. :(

    Thanks all.

To the best of my knowledge Dell US will not ship internationally (except APO/FPO), and instad they will direct you to the closest international Dell website / Sales Representative.

ordered mine yesterday from micro center. estimated date for shipping is 9/04/09. it is back ordered right now. 7-21 business days. so it could be sooner, it could be later. i chated with a rep and she said the m17x is selling like hot cakes. they are thinking about raising the price on their site. anyone in the detriot area, there is an open box m17x for about $2100 at microcenter store.

Ok, I want to get your opinion on this one guys.

I am supposed to return my broken system tomorrow to Dell, but I wanted to keep the battery and AC power adapter just because I think it would be handy to have spares, especially for the battery.

What do you think they will do if I shipped it back without those things? I am completely fine with paying for the stuff, I just want to avoid the huge hassle of calling them and asking, then spending 2 hours on the phone explaining to the customer service rep what I want to do.

Do you think I should/could do it? Would they even care? Don't get me wrong, I don't want to steal from them, I just want the spare battery and AC adapter and I didn't see it listed on their website.

I would call, try to have them overnight you some before you send it back, just say you want to have spares. I am sure this could be done reasonably quick

hello guys! Been lurking the forum for a while, and am finally supposed to get my m17x this afternoon.

I was wondering, have you found any sort of covers / protectors for the lappy such as the Zagg Invisible Shield? they do have one for the area51 m17 but not for the new m17x.

Have you been able to get any sort of protection for it at all? if not, how do you guys protect your lappy?

    Thanks :3

I just use the protective cloth bag that they ship the system with..works fine for me. I don't think I would ever want to put something like that clear plastic on this beautiful system...

EDIT: Called Dell about the spare AC adapter and battery..they want at most $159.99 CAN for the AC adapter and he couldn't quote me a price for the battery..but they aren't for sale yet so he can't give me exact quotes..still debating on whether or not I should do it.

Quick ?, just to be on the safe side, let's say hypothetically you got the stanard warranty to save money at the time. Could you upgrade/extend the warranty before the warranty itself expires?

I know this sounds silly but I am still wondering if it is really possible to use a crossX configuration on this laptop due to the Nvidia 9400 integrated chipset even if disabled. I am no expert of sli/crossx configurations but I always thought that you could not use a crossX on an nvidia's chipset motherboard.

The m17x cooling is sufficient enough to not need a notebook cooler right?
Ambient room temperature it shouldn't run too hot right?
