Well it's not exactly at best buy lol... only online, and only their options....
-
so if I were to get a base m17x, with just the 260 how easy would it be to even find another 260, or 280's (or some ati cards) to buy?
-
Eurocomm
RJtech
couple Dealers
-
cool, thanks.
-
You'll need an MXM 3.0 card with sli connector, so no it won't be that simple. Most cards that RJ tech and whatnot have are MXM 2.1 cards without sli connectors (will work in old M17x, M17, or NP9262 but not in sli).
-
In time they willl
Once he gets the machine it will be a month from now which means the Clevo will be out
and shipping
-
This maybe a bit off subject but I remember a few days ago someone giving a link to new Intel SSD that are supposed to come out in the next week or so. Can't find the link anymore, can anyone help?
-
Oh an you guys should look at that article on the Inquirer:
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1271809/nvidia-mobile-gpu-kimono
This tells me there will be a GTS280M using the 40nm process and GDDR5 and greatly increasing the performance compared to the current GTX280M.
Hopefully it won't be later than early 2010. It could stop the upcoming ATI card from getting much ground into the M17X. -
Wishful thinking. Nothing substantial in that article about a GTS 280M.
-
Is the 280gtx in SLI really worth it over a 260gtx SLI?
In Europe the price difference is damn retarded...a 280GTX SLI upgrade costs 1,538.80 USD while the 260GTX SLI upgrade only costs 279.781 USD.
Thanks in advance! -
No way is it worth $1300.00 more , heck i had a hard time even justifying $300 more so my answer would be most certainly NO.
-
Seconded
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
As a 280m owner..... lol I concur.... no way it is worth it
-
Same here it is well worth it. In the US the upgrade is only $600 from the base model.
Concerning the inquirer article, yes there is no mention of a GTS280M but it will have to come in the next 6 months or they will lose their market share to ATI and Nvidia always has something under their sleeves. -
Don`t know if its posted allready m17x review (in german) t9600 with 260m
model .
http://www.notebookjournal.de/tests/review-notebook-alienware-m17x-945 -
Awesome review, even if I can't understand german it's great.
Thanks! -
Someone needs to tell them that even though it is call Allpowerful that a train will win in a fight.
-
In the review they say
"All in all, the Alienware M17x currently the best display among gamers notebooks. " (Translated from German)
You think they got an upgraded screen? -
it was written on the 10th of july ...so i unno
-
Hands on review also in german (soon in english) q9300 gtx 280 sli
with nice unboxing pic`s.
And a score of 15378 in 3mark06

MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Damn Germans! Lol you know they are just going to play Dota on it
-
I don't see a problem with that lol. At least it's better than forcing oneself to play some modern games with superior graphics but instead of generating fun, your brain generates stress hormones.
Nice stock scores. Although I'd wait to see the performance boosts from a 4870 CF, just look at the 3870s, single, the cards were weaker than or similar to a 9800m GTS, but when CF'ed, the performance gain was off the roof.
On a sidenote, how far can the GTX 280m in the m17x go in terms of O/C? -
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
Jury still out on the GTX 280m, especially in SLI. Drivers as of yet are in infancy. I don't think anyone has hit 17,000 3dmark, for one. -
JEsus people 3dmarks sucks !!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
You would like 3dmark since they have the "holy cow" easter egg in 2k1
-
-
3dmark01 have a easter egg that let you play a little game against some flying cows.
In 3dmark05 you can replace the flying dolphins with flying cows:
futuremark looks to like you
-
nice
I would actually play that game
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
ahahahah... anyway 000022 I was just joking
-
Just joshing around with my comment, although my comment stands true for some modern games, sadly. It seems that developers care much more about graphics than gameplay. Why not a mixture of both, like say, COD 4 (unoriginal example, yea, I know).
-
For anyone looking for silver chassis pics, or a review (of sorts) have a look at my posts on this page.

I'm Daedalus, FYI. -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Not at all unoriginal I happen to think there are few games that can compete with Modern warfare... it had an engrossing single player and the best and most extensive and replayable Multi-player to date... MWF2 !!!! -
Muhahaha I just pulled the trigger on this laptop.
SLI GTX280 verison.
*kicks macbook pro under table*
Now to find some one to buy my Macbook Pro, haha. -

-
wow....a statement worth framing...lol
a sager owner selling his unit to buy an AW....wow....
-
Hey all,
Has anyone ran an additional monitor with this laptop? I could use both the laptop monitor and an external 30 inch at the same time no issue correct? I wouldn't be getting the sli option either.
thanks. -
Yes, if you're not getting SLI then it won't be a problem.
On that topic, does anyone know if no multimonitor support in SLI is just an SLI thing or if it's just a limitation with the Dell drivers? I'd like to not have to disable SLI every time I want to use two monitors. I'd like to be able to use my other LCD monitor as a secondary monitor so I can see X-fire, Steam, or TeamSpeak while I'm in game. -
You need to update your drivers
to 186 in my Sig -
Ah okay, I don't actually have mine yet, I just saw that in the M17x manual. So you can do multi-monitor while in SLI with those drivers?
-
yes SLI with multiple monitors wasn't introduced until 18x series drivers
-
OK cool thanks for the info.

As discussed before, the GTX 260M/280M branded chips in the M17x are of yesteryear's technology. I stumbled across an article at Tom's Hardware that exploits this deceptive naming tactic in great detail and even provides some amazing benchmarks.
Read this if you're planning on maybe dropping your desktop rig for a gaming laptop, or just want to be more informed about what you get with your $1800-5000 for an M17x...
Mobile GeForce GTX Graphics: Model Inflation Gone Awry
Believe me, this article is a must-read.
Edit: Here's some preview benchmarks...
-
Anyone honestly expecting desktop grade performance from a laptop was in for a slap in the face. That said, sli 280M rivals a GTX 285 or 9800 GX2, which is nothing to be ashamed of.
-
would you guys like to see pictures of m17x in red?
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
I've seen it now grrr... they are now available in the UK and Canada... they should update the US site soon as well... I wanted red too
-
and THIS deserves a screenshot.
