Hey guys. Well my M17 arrived Thursday. Just thought I'd give you some of my impressions thus far. I haven't had much time to fiddle with it yet, just install stuff and get accustomed to vista (already have W7 ordered since I dislike vista).

First thing I noticed is just how big and heavy this thing is and this is coming from an ex M1710 user. It barely fits into a bag which accommodated my old laptop quite well. I'm not sure if it's suitable for using on your lap for long periods of time as you might develop circulation problems :) Just kidding, it is heavy though.

The thing I was most worried about was the screen. As it turns out it's pretty good in my opinion. There's slight bleeding at the bottom, 5mm maybe only when pitch black is being displayed. Not exactly what I'd expect from a top of the line laptop but not enough of a problem to consider returning it(lucky Dell). Colours and brightness are pretty decent too. I have no idea how bright 400 nits is supposed to be and I doubt it's that bright but who want's a display that cuts the eyes out of you anyway.

There are another couple of little niggles I have with it. Firstly, the loudness of the fans varies greatly. It can barely be heard at idle or light work and if you're running demanding apps the noise is acceptable, which is great but if you're blocking the vents with your knees/legs it can go up to jet-taking-off type loudness. Of course, if you usually run your laptop on a table then you'll have no problem. In fact, in situations that used to have my old M1710 screaming for cold air on a desk, the M17 is just purring through all that ventalation underneath.

Secondly, and this might just be mine, but there's a slight buzzing from the far left corner of the laptop when some heavy GPU work is going on (coil buzz?). Now since I've changed drivers it seems less severe but it's still present at times. It's only really audiable when the room is more or less silent though, so it's not a big deal.

Thirdly, there is some buzzing from the charger at certain times, such as changing resolution. Again not a big deal as it's quite low and the charger is usually further away and out of sight.

Lastly, the keyboard lighting seems a little uneven and a small bit dull on the bottom row of keys, the spacebar in particular seems like a light is missing from the middle of the key. But for the most part the keyboard is beautiful and has a good feel to it.

However, don't let the last few paragraphs put you off. There's a lot more to like about this laptop than dislike. They're just the little things some people might consider negatives. On the plus side this monster is beautiful & sleek. All the lines and corners are perfect, nothing looks out of place. It looks and feels as solid as they come. I was suprised with the sound quality, I considered the M1710s sound quality very good for such small speakers but the M17x's is better. And there's just the small point that it has chewed up and spat out anything I've thrown at it so far. Oblivion maxed out, Mirror's Edge maxed out, Crysis 1920x1200 high settings, Call of Juarez BiB maxed out.

So that's my little report for you guys. I hope Dell hurry up and get you guys your laptops soon.

I see a lot of people complaining about the keyboard lighting. Mine wasn't completely even but I didn't really care. It looks friggin' FANTASTIC.

This goes to show any prospective buyers that EVERYONE is different and opinions will vary (just as much as systems will vary re: screens, etc).

Anyway, congrats on the system BCSP and I hope you enjoy it!!! WOOT :D

Mine got delivered to my house on the 15th, 16th and 17th. Obviously I'm in the USA, with my family, so no-one is home to take the order. I e-mailed my Dell rep around the 10th to tell him to contact UPS to reschedule the order for the 21st or 22nd but I guess he didn't. Again, Dell CS is .

Not sure where you're from but dell.co.uk =

Pay nothing for 12 months, then spread your payments over 36 months, or alternatively, repay your balance in full for an administration fee of £49 - it's that easy!

    Due to End 22/07/2009.

Just where are the M17x models manufactured? I rang Dell because my UPS tracking page has been showing 'Billing Received' since the 16th and I wanted to know where my order actually was.

I was told that it was on its way to the shipping company - from China!

I thought they were assembled in the EU. Are they actually put together in China or was the Dell Customer Support Droid just bullting me?

    Hi again,

Mine was shipped on the 9th of July, at least according to Dell.
I guess this date is the date it left the factory in China to some depot or perhaps an airport where they are being put in a container for shipment by airplane.
There is a large label on my box saying: STANDARD OUTBOUND ORDERS, SHIPTO 1841536 with a date of 13/07/09. This might the date it actually left China on an airplane to the Netherlands.
UPS picked it up on the 15th of July in the Netherlands and delivered it at my doorstep on the 16th.

And yes my box also says: COMPUTER MADE IN CHINA.

Oh man, i just lost a massive message that i was about to post in this thread arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrhhhhhhhhhhhhgggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh. So i will spare you all from my latest stories of dire service because i cant be bothered writing it again.

Good to here things are now happening for you Aristotelhs, i recieved my tracking number last Friday 17th. Anyway to cut a very very very long story short, my latest status with my tracking number is 'In Transit - Rescheduled'. My UPS delivery date has changed from the 22nd to the 23rd.

As my order is still currently sitting in Eindhoven with the status "departure scan", does anyone know if it is realistic that my order will arrive for the 23rd (thursday) ???

    Cheers guys

    Hi

could you tell me please how much did you pay for your m17x in UK ?
I tried to buy today M17x in following configuration:
    - QX9300
    - gtx 260m sli
    - 1TB hdd
    - Wuxga
    - DVD
    - 4GB ram
    - 1 year warranty

and I used dell chat instead of website, thinking that maybe I can negotiate the price, but unfortunately no, I could benefit only from EPP, they didn't offer me any further reductions, but 3 weeks ago there was a dell coupon which worked with EPP but i had not enough money then :( and the price was then around 2580quid, now 200 more

actually i was trying to find where this guy found the 10% discount code for Uk. after searching i found that there was a promotion of the m17x the first days it was released. the good thing of ordering through a sales rep is to have support at least theoretically if something goes wrong. discounts, negotiations etc is not their best and i dont believe they are allowed to do this by themselves except if you are lucky enough or you have a really expensive configuration. in your case i would prefer to buy sli gtx280 instead of the qx9300 and buy qx9300 from ebay as i did anyway. the prices also changed since i ordered. some parts of the m17x were a few cheaper then and i used the 10% discount code too. i paid 2400 pounds (initially without the discount was 2600)

I used the 10% off XPS system coupon when I ordered, configured was £3717, paid £3343 with the discount.
After a saga trying to get 2nd HDD caddy I was going to return it for a refund.
I tried re-pricing and realised the discount coupons nolonger worked.
Agreed to keep laptop - for which they offered to refund another 10%, and then managed to order the caddy for £19.79.
So in the end my final price is £3080
I upped the warranty to 3 years and got CompleteCare - money well spent from past experience. Probably the best thing about Dell buying Alienware.

Just got back from my holiday and my lappy is coming tomorrow via UPS, who have tried 4 times previously.

On a side note, just built the exact same system that I bought and it comes to £2,927.99 now. That's 700 more than what I paid. Only different is the warranty for 4 years is now the same price as for 3.

Yipee! UPS finally have my M17x. They got it in Eindhoven yesterday - so it took 4 days to travel from the factory to Holland. As of 7:48 this morning it's in the UK. Damn, if I still lived in Essex I could have popped down to Barking to pick it up. But it's looking good for a delivery tomorrow.

Still, it was my birthday on Monday and my very nice friends bought me an official Alienware Chronograph. Vairy Naice.

i thought you said that you got in phase 5 on friday and received tracking number on Friday too. so i was anxious. so it was 4 working days or including weekend? i am sure i will follow your paths so the faster you get it the faster i get it too.

regarding your info and this of dikkiedirk it takes 4 days to be sent from the delivery company and then receive the tracking number. maybe this is the difference between 2 days shipment and the standard that we selected. Dell also says it may take 4 days to be able to track your order.

Yeah sorry mate, it went to phase 5 on Friday and i think i received the tracking number then. Thereafter it remained in 'Billing Information received' status until the Tuesday. After that it all happens quite quickly (although mine is 1 day late).

From the Tuesday it was shipped to Eindhoven then Brussels & then the UK all in less than one day. It arrived in Barking at 05:56 this morning (Wednesday) and was then shipped to Manchester at 11:53 today, sooooo i should receive it tomorrow. I like the way it takes a matter of hours to enter/exit 3 countries & then takes 2 day to get from Barking to Manchester.

Anyway, not long to go now..........

Ive just had a look at my past emails as i'm suffering from memory failure.......
My order went into stage 5 on the 17/07/09, and i received the tracking number the same day. The tracking number was sent via email (and posted on the order status page) from Dell and both happened quite late on in the day (hence my message above). Hope this helps Aristotelhs.

If youve been waiting long for your tracking ID, it (i hate saying this) may be worth giving DELL a ring to see whats happening.

I hope you get it soon.

Oh yeah, and once you get your tracking number and the status changes from "Billing Information Received" to "in Transit" you will most likely receive it in 2-3 days. If your in London i would guess at 2 days.

i didnt receive anything. nothing on order status page for my tracking number and no email about this. and i was wondering if everything can go fine now on. i will wait two days and if they dont send me anything or update the order status page with my tracking nymber i will have a nice chat with them.

they say something about technical difficulties on the website and that it doesnt update. but it updates as usual my order status. the usual sh.t of dell.

i am sure they will make my life difficult until the last day.

I, too, got the tracking number when it went into Stage 5 - on the 16th. It then took until the 20th for UPS to show anything. After that it went...

It's on the road! It's actually going to arrive today (assuming UPS can find the place).

    Hi

I finally ordered mine yesterday (UK), unfortunately WUXGA screen was not available on-line indeed, so I did a phone order, they confirmed that for now WUXGA is available only by chat/phone and unfortunatelly I had to pay for it 160£ instead of 80£ as it was previously online, but I have Inspiron E1705, Xps M1710 both with WUXGA and I will never resign from this screen, I think they are the best on laptop market.
My EDD is on 04/08/2009 and my config is:
    -Nebula REd
    -WUXGA
    -QX9300
    -Sli 260m GTX
    -4 GB RAM
    -1TB HDD
    -DVD
    -1 YEAR WARRANTY
    -1 YEAR ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE SUPPORT

For this config I paid 2809£, I know that I overpaid, especially for WUXGA, but I couldn't wait longer for availability WUXGA onlne and valid dell voucher.
I know that I could buy QX9300 from Shirley on ebay, but I saw Moo's video and with my poor skills and wife staring at me I probably would break something and my wife would kill me :)

ok i got my tracking number after my request. i entered carriers link (ups uk) which i found by my own.

it says status: billing information received and Shipped/Billed On: 27/07/2009. they predict the future or something? anyone understands anything?

have you registered on ups website to see more information or all these imfo you get are just without register?

That's when UPS expects to pick the laptop up from Dell (Dell has it shipped to them from China first) and truly ship it.

For example, it took 5 days for mine after being "shipped" according to the Dell site to be picked up by UPS from an address in the Netherlands, and then another 2 days in transit via UPS until the laptop arrived at my doorstep.

So yours will likely be picked up by UPS on the 27th and you should get it on the 29th or maybe the 30th.

yes hopefully. i am happy since this is in the range of your orders too. i am used to being delayed :( lets see now. i initially ordered 10th of june! i cant stop saying that! i have my rights as you understand. thanks for info.

just one silly question. why they deliver it to Netherlands UPS and not the UK one directly?? if they send it from China to UK or other country's UPS directly via airplane then it wouldnt take more than three days in total. they are making their best to delay the shipment and make our lives more difficult. anyway

Hi guys I ordered mine yesterday from the netherlands also had to call to get the 1920x1200 screen. The Dell guy told me that delivery could be delayed because of the screen choice because the demand was bigger then the suply they had.
My EDD is 11-08-2009 and my config is:
    Alienware M17x : Base Lunar Silver 1
    Processor : Intel Core 2 Quad Q9000(2.00GHz,1066MHz,6MB L2 Cache) 1
    Display : 17in Wide UXGA (1920X1200) - Beyond HD (1200p) 1
    Memory : 4096MB (2x2048) 1333MHz DDR3 Dual Channel 1
    Hard Drive : 160GB Free Fall Sensor (7200RPM) 1
Optical Drive : DVD+/-RW (DVD, CD read and write) Drive 1
    Graphics : Single 1GB GDDR3 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 260M 1

Really hope Dell can make the EDD because I can't wait for this beauty to arrive :p

Another dutchman who takes the leap with Dell AW!
Hope you found lots of interesting stuff on the NBR pages already.
Your specs are almost the same like mine, may I ask why you didn't take the SLI conifg? I couldn't order it without it. (But you could always upgrade in the future I guess) Nevertheless nice config!

I am still waiting on my machine too. My EDD is 30-07 so hopefully it will be delivered by then (just one week to go). But it wil probably take longer as you might have noticed, some ppl here are waiting a whole lot longer for it to arrive.

Ordered my M17x on Tuesday before they removed the 17" WUXGA 1920x1200 option, so luckly I manged to get that. What kind of lead times are there in the UK from date of order?

I hope my M17x doesn't come through Barking (I live about 3 miles away from the depot) because it will probably be crushed and on fire!!

    Correction another dutchwoman :D

I didn't order the SLI because I really dont think I need it right now. And with that in mind I could better upgrade it in a while when the gpu's are much cheaper.

I'm helping you hope it wacdag

Yep I noticed the waiting times from some are terrible. The first time I phoned Dell I didn't see this post yet and asked them what the delivery time was.. they told me 10 days... yeh really!!!!
When I sad I saw on the internet from a few people who where waiting much longer he told me the truth and amitted that the waiting times where going up for some configs.

i think you are the first woman in here that orders this machine by herself and didnt say her boyfriend. hehe welcome.

the screen will really delay your order especially now that its even removed from their website this shows that there is a complete lack of hd screens. however this maybe for good. people who know to order via phone will only get the hd screen. these who dont wont have the chance. so less orders with hd screen. this may be the strategy of Dell for the time being. actually even i didnt know how to order via phone. the luck or unluck led me there. you shall see.

keep in mind that they face some technical difficulties now so this maybe the reason for the absence of hd screen configuration. and the order status page is not updated. thats probably the reason i didnt get my tracking number and i had to contact them. they didnt even give me the link to the carrier which i found by myself.

    Oops... Sorry about that

I thought just the same at first! But then again, there would be an empty space in my laptop, and I'm affraid mice will go live in there.
So in my case it had to be filled! ;)
