the test I have seen say that even a ssd with a 100,000 to 200,000 sector writes to fail ratio has a life span at normal everyday use of several years.

With all these rumors that CF 5870 is avail has anyone with a good sales contact called to confirm? Mandrake? If so, what are the cost of the cards for us that would like to replace the old 47 series? Is it possible to order the set?

Reports from the UK state they will be the same price as the CF 4870, which will most probably be unlikely for the Dell USA site, as the M17x config is over $1000 more expensive.. just my business perspective.

Well almost all of your consumer grade SSDs will use MLC which currently has a 5000 write cycle durability. For every day usage by consumers that's probably more than enough with some of the other tricks they play. Only if your doing high random write transaction processing would the SLC likely be needed for durability.

You know what we need? An M17x-R2 5870 Crossfire FAQ. I'll start, you guys keep adding:

    OFFICIAL M17x-R2 5870 Crossfire FAQ:

    1. When is crossfire 5870m going to be released?
      ANSWER: When it's done.
    2. Can I buy a single 5870m and upgrade later to crossfire?
ANSWER: If we worked at Dell with the AW engineering group, we could answer that.
    3. Can I buy a 4870m crossfire system and upgrade later to crossfire 5870m?
      ANSWER: See the answer above.
    4. I heard on the forums that someone who spoke to their rep. said it's coming out on XX-XX-XXXX. Is that true?
ANSWER: Rule#1 of the AW fight club: Never trust a Dell rep.
    5. What is this "Faizian core" I keep hearing about?
ANSWER: It's the essence of the 3D synthesizer matrix that comprises the All Powerful Crossfire 5870. It's like the force in Star Wars, only more powerful.
    6. Is nVidia's 480M SLI going to be faster than Crossfire 5870m?
ANSWER: If I could predict the future, I wouldn't be here on NBR.

Can you say, quadruple performance at 1/3 the cost? I can, I can also say mediclorian count won't have poo on faizian II x6 cores.

    How can this be hype?

i spoke to dell as i am on my 2nd R2 lol! Long story why, but the Supervisor i am dealing with was under the impression the R2 needs a new Motherboard and PSU review before they can put 5870cf into mass production.

Also i see in the signature for Slaymetender and a few others that they already have the 5870 in crossfire in there systems. Could you explain how you went about doing this please.

    Thanks guys.

I have the configuration I want to order in my signature. It was to show the online rep what I wanted. I do not have it yet obviously, as it's not available. The hype part is people saying it's available and they can do a 'custom' order.

A05 BIOS support CrossFire 5870 but flickering as returned etc. problems have happened in the new Bios. But yes a bigger PSU is probably needed..

If that is true, I find it highly interesting seeing as the 5870s are supposed to use 5W less each than the 4870s. Here again, how often can you believe a Dell rep? Without an official announcement it's all just speculation.

They probably meant it was rated at 5w less than 4870"cf" lol so 2 5870's has basically nearly double the consumption lol.

Anyone heard if there was an R3 in the pipeline? Given the time between m17 then the R1 and then R2 being about 3-4 months apart an R3 is surely due out soon.

Well, I made it through the Saga. I finally decided to order an Alienware M17x-R2 with dual 4870s and RAID'd 500 HDDs. I ordered on April 7th and I was stoked. Super excited! I'd never had a laptop like this before and I wanted something portable for travelling and going to LANs. Surely this will fit the bill. It shipped to me on the 21st of April & I had it in my hands on the 23rd just in time for a LAN party (that was cancelled) and a weekend. MONDAY Morning Engadget revealed the xfire 5870s and I was pissed. Out of Date Already?! No way. I shipped it back. Said I'd wait. Read and Read and Read forums. Got on the list from a Dell guy I talked to about being notified for re-order when they released the 5870s. I heard May 5th, nothing, May 13th, nothing, May 20th, nothing. Finally yesterday I got an email from my Dell guy saying they were in and I could order. I live in the US and I'm happy to say that On May 18th, almost 1 month after sending my dream machine back, I have a new one spec'd the way I want it on the way. I can only hope it's worth the wait, and anyone else waiting in the US they are available on their website for your money. Good luck gents.

Hey guys, i know i am a week from the last post, BUT, i have news which may rattle you all.

I have an R2 which has 2 services already and is only 30 days(this is important)Old. I Called them after the 2nd service pissed off and looking for a refund. This was when the unit was about 6 days old lol. The guy on the phone said that i had upto 90 days to request a replacement because it was serviced 2 times straight out of the box.

I am now 30 days down the track and the unit is fine but i have 4870 xf in it and wanted to up it to 5870 (no charge lol cus i can get a free replacement, but that means i will have a ty R1 still under my desk and an R2 which is still good and the 5870s lol. They still havent come to pick them up lol). BUT this is the juicy bit. The tech i spoke to today mentioned to me that the M17X may be getting replaced by a newer model altogether, he wasnt clear on a date for release, but it looks apparent to be within the next month or so.

At this point i am holding out till somewhere early july before i finalise the call to tech support again and tell them what i require in the replacement unit!

I can only imagine where they go from an i7 820 8gig 1333mhz 500x2 raid 0 4870 xf (but i could have 5870cf) etc etc.

If you guys have heard anything regarding this i would love some feedback whether it be about the possible specs or dates or dismissal even.

    Thanks Guys

I believe that would have something to do with the new nVidia card that someone posted about today. Not so sure I'm sold on that, I'm gonna stick with what I have coming.

The new nvdias are not as good as 5870s check a post from yesterday which confirms this.
And also I would send it back because they will eventually charge your card when the depo don't get a scan in clearance from ur old machine...

    What do you mean?

Also what model Nvidia cards are they adding? 300 series? I thought they were just reworks or the 200 series so nothing spectacular, BUT if its a 470/480 well then i could use a good jet heater for winter. Running a ducted heater is cheap lol
