M17x Order Status Discussion - Part 3

It's actually more expensive over here since there's no tax on any purchases. I've actually kept myself busy with work and gaming with the ps3 and g53. Oh well, I guess I can wait a little longer.

 

I ended up buying Crysis 2 for my ps3. Waiting sucks.

Call and ask them to expedite it? Or if you havent already, ask for NBD?

 

is it possibly the Black that is the production shortage and N'Red are still being shipped ?

 

I have already had Sandy Bridge in January, a i7-2620QM, some time ago now, that was recalled.

I was thinking with all this waiting, time I get it, that's 3 months from its release and then the recall and delay.

Is Sandy Bridge still worth it? Give it a few more months from now, and it is half way or more through its life cycle.

This is has got be a question that some people must be thinking by now?

 

yeah I called and asked to expedite it. They said they put in a request. i told them im going on a business trip before my EDD and Id like to have it with me when i go on the trip. So hopefully that helps but it probably wont lol. It sucks not having a console or anything to game on dude im going nuts! lol

 

Not sure if this is the right thread to ask my questions since I technically have not ordered anything yet but this looks like my best bet. First off I'm a total noob in regards to anything PC/laptop related so please don't mind the noobness of my questions. Long story short I've been a gamer my entire life (32 years old) yet never owned a gaming computer. Was planning on building a gaming desktop this year but learned about the M17x R3 and needless to say was pretty blown away. This laptop will be used 100% for gaming. Nothing else. Please keep that in mind in regards to my questions.

1. Which processor to chose. I see a lot of people on this forum in their builds going with the high end 2820 instead of the base 2630. In regards from a pure gaming standpoint, is the extra $350 worth it?

2. RAM. Any reason to get more then 4 GB's if only gaming?

3. Wireless HD. This is HUGE for me. My main TV is a 1080p projector which I display on a 120 inch screen. To display the alienware on the big screen with not connecting any wires sounds beyond awesome. However, from what I read it sounds like this feature isn't even implemented yet. Does anyone that has one have the full story on this feature? Will it ever see the light of day or did alienware bite off more then they can chew here? I always worry when promised features do not ship with a unit.

4. HDMI in. If I plug my Xbox 360 into this thing through the HDMI in does the sound come through that same HDMI cable and play through the laptops speakers or do I need to run the 360 audio to external speakers? I know this is a stupid question but since my projector obviously has no audio, HDMI for me has always been a video only cable.

5. Any reason to upgrade from the standard wireless card and what would the benefits be? This laptop is never going to leave my house and I currently get a really good signal.

If you guys can think of any other "first time alienware noob buying advice" it would be much appreciated.

Just get the 2720.

 

1) Nope, from a pure gaming standpoint, upgrading the processor is not going to help you much. The 2720 is a good sweet spot, the 2820 is not a good use of your money.

2) Definitely not, especially from Dell. If for some reason you find you need more ram in the future, it is much cheaper to purchase additional ram on your own.

3) I know nothing about Wireless HD actually being implemented. With HDMI being super easy to plug in when you need it, I wouldn't sweat this. Just get yourself a good long HDMI cable.

4) The HDMI standard carries at least stereo sound on the cable, and newer revisions of the standard (1.4 I think?) carry full surround sound. I'm not sure which this is, and I myself haven't tried it on mine, but I'd wager it will bring the sound in and play it through the speakers. It actually probably says it in the manual, which I don't have on me at the moment.

5) I have the standard wireless card in mine, and have no issues whatsoever gaming on my wireless N network. I've even hosted a few servers with nobody complaining.

I love the machine, and definitely recommend it.

 

just an update for those of you who are tracking order statuses.
order date 3/8, edd 4/4. this is day 16. still in production

EDIT: my sales rep just emailed me saying my EDD is now 4/7. not sure where he is getting his info because the website still says 4/4.

 

Have you had any thoughts of cancelling your order and going for something else cheaper and readily available on the market?

 

if i could find a laptop with a 6970m for 1300 bucks then i would probably cancel and buy the other one. but i got on the 30 percent off deal through aafes so i doubt i could find a similar deal.

 

I had a feeling this was going to happen.. I ordered mine on the 8th as well.. So it looks as if I will be waiting even longer. I am wondering if the Japan quake has caused shortages of some of the components?

 

we should get money off our order if it goes past the initial edd. or free stuff like headsets or swag

 

I might call Dell and try to talk them into sending me a free bag or a mouse or something.. Its worth a shot

I got this as a reply from Dell:

"I truly apologies for the shortage but dell don’t' do compensation, will expedite once the part comes in."

I hope expedite does not mean, do a rushed job on assembly after wating for nothing during the idle time.

Been reading in these forums that the chassis is not of very good quality, or there is issues with the type of materials they are using (cheap).

 

My EDD is March 29th and so far it is still "In Production" and no back-order shown and haven't recieved a call from them. I wonder why they don't call their customers to tell them that their computers are back-ordered or delayed. I shouldn't have to be the one calling them especially since I have been waiting since Jan. 12th. I will give it til my due date. Did your online status change at all and did you have to call and request the information that your laptop was delayed? Actually you or anyone else who have had theirs delayed?

 

Ordered 3/3. My estimated ship date was yesterday with an EDD of 3/28. Called them up on Monday to see if it was still on track to ship on 3/24, they said yes and would call me once it did. I called the automated system on tuesday (they day after I talked to someone) and it magically changed to "Preparing to Ship". They called me on Wednesday saying I would get an e-mail in the next two days with the tracking info. Still waiting on that e-mail and the status on the webpage is still "In Production", whereas, the automated call system it's still in "preparing to ship". Hopefully I get an e-mail today or tomorrow at the latest so I know they are gonna meet their EDD date.

 

The Alien has landed! Time to start loading my apps and games and do some tweaking/benching. GL to all those who are still waiting.

 

This is what I am hoping come Monday. NBD for me, so my EDD is Tuesday.

 

Ordered five minutes ago...EDD 4/20

 

I had to call, but mostly emails as of lately. When I received the below comment in a email reply from the rep, it was almost enough to make me cancel my order (still thinking about it), as I felt it was boarding on offensive and rude, this is from someone that should be taking it in a professional manner.
The lead time was 3-4 weeks, and according to my order status, and it is still tells me 31st of March, which is 3-4 weeks from ordering. Although the rep is saying around mid April now with the smart comment added.


"We did put online that this model has extended lead time. maybe you overlook "

 

Going on day 4 with preparing for shipment Looks like next week for me.

 

Is there any way you can pay for an express build or something?

Phone status now tells me that my order is preparing for shipment while the website remains the same. Since the status changed this week before my deadline for cancellation, I've decided to wait it out until the very end!

Oh that makes me feel even better now. I ordered on the 9th. Someone else just got theirs that ordered on the 10th. So hopefully early next week. The only prob for me is that I'm out of town on Tue., and I'm gonna be really ticked off if they try and deliver it and I'm not here. I don't think that will happen though as the web and the automated phone both say that it is still in production/build stage. "Fingers Crossed" WEDNESDAY!!!

3/7. Got here today 3/25. EDD was 3/30. Setting it up right now.

 

They Have till Wednesday for mine I ordered 3/7. I hope you get yours early too but didnt happen so far for me.

 

SOOOOO 18 days total!!! What a drop off from what we were seeing with 9-12 days. (with a few 15 days) There was def something up and Dell didn't tell us. I wish they would be more up front and let us know what was going on. Update the site and the phone. Just be honest. Any info is better than just seeing "in production" for several weeks. If they were honest with us we would understand better. At least I think everyone would. If I knew why it was taking so long or exactly what stage it was in or what stage it was held up in because of a part being back ordered, would help me. I might be a little disgruntled but at least my curiosity would be curbed.

Man dookie, now that you got yours I feel like I should have mine, and the wait bug is hitting me harder than ever. Seeing other peoples pics/vids was keeping me insane, but watching your vid just makes me want to fly to the plant where they are making mine (wherever that may be) and pic it up in person. I don't know how to explain it. I'm going out of my mind, while still being sane. LOL
