What do you guys think, buy now and wait for the 580M till mid March shipping. or wait for R4?

I have this in cart, final total: £1,799.35
Alienware M17xR3 : Base Stealth Black
    Processor : Intel Core i7 Processor 2760QM (2.40Ghz, 6MB, 4C)

    Memory : 8192MB (2x4096) 1333MHz DDR3 Dual Channel
    Hard Drive : 256GB SSD + 750GB 7,200rpm SATA Dual Drives
    Optical Drive : 8X DVD+/-RW Drive
    Graphics : 2GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M
    Wireless : Europe Killer Wireless-N 1103
OS: Windows 7 SP1 Home Premium (64 BIT)
    Name Plate Engraving : Generic
One free Dell Expert call to help with your PC queries within 60 days of purchase
Standard Service - 1 year of Next Business Day coverage included with your PC
    1 year Accidental Damage Protection

I am not a graphicalholic, dont need to max out on settings but would be nice if I could do so.
    I'm gonna be playing Diablo3, Guildwars2, Battlefield 3, DotA2.
I play mainly FPS and MMO and some RTS, I prefer stable fps 30+ (preferably 60) in games than ultrasetting with 10fps~20fps.

I am not thinking for M18x because it is too heavy.
I had been using 15.5" for 5years and are very used to it already, 17.3" is already a big leap for me :O ...

Just mentioning that buying RAM & SSD's will be cheaper if you do it yourself vs having Dell install. I'm no expert, but I am gadget freak. And I promise, there's always something better coming right around the corner. Just decide if the r3 is enough for your needs. Plus is there even a definite ETA on the r4?

how much should i expect to pay for this setup? i did a build up at the website and it comes out ~$2200. can anyone direct me to online coupon is there's any? all i could find was $50 off coupon which doesn't help a whole a lot. thanks!

This is good advice. There is always something better looming on the horizon if you always look ahead you will never end up pulling the trigger. Look at your needs and decide.

I had this same concern but looked at what I wanted and realized the R3 with the 580m was going to run everything I would play at the moment with no issues and even headroom for the future (Mostly MMO player, SWTOR/WOW ect)

    Sally,

    M17x r3, i7 2760QM (2.4ghz/3.5ghz), 16gb of ram, 256gb SSD, Nvidia GTX 580m, 120hz 3D screen

My buying conditions where based on having my system work into the future as much as possible. The 580m is actually overkill for most of my gaming needs right now but gives me future proofing. 16gb of ram is over kill for most, but as this will be a work machine where I also will be loading up big databases and have about a hundred windows open (only slightly being sarcastic there..) I need the head space. 3D screen was more about getting the brightest screen AW put out at the moment, though I do like 3d :)

I got a bunch of discounts as my company spends ALOT of money on Dell products each year and i have a very good relationship with my rep who although is on the busniess end hooked me up on the home front. So I ended up getting this 3.6k or so machine for about 3k

I've got the 8Gb 1333hz on the config, is 1600hz recommended? I see many gets the 1600hz ones.

I did mention the cost of the Harddrive is too high to my sales rep and he said it is fine to add another harddrive by myself but it would void the warrenty.

I heard A LOT rumours about Alienware's unstablility and poor QC, so I thought the warrenty is absolutely essential.

I too called up and had them check my order status, they say I still an good for the 2/28. All of this waiting and uncertainty is getting to be a annoying as hell, my fingers are crossed that our's ships on time or really close to there estimated dates.

Also I agree see what your needs are and if the r3 are good enough pull the trigger. There is always something with technology that's just on the horizon.

16gigs of ram is actually a reasonably good investment with an SSD, since you want to completely disable page file, and 16 gigs guarantees you won't hit any issues.

This is a little upsetting to me. People have been waiting a month for their systems, but have to wait. You already have a system, yet your replacement came in before new orders get finalized. I suppose current owners hold priority over new orders. I do understand that they don't want you sitting on a system with a bad GPU, but it is getting rediculous the amount of time some are waiting. I have a feeling I won't be seeing my system on the 1st as projected, but I also don't think it'll be here past the 15th, at least I hope it doesn't take that long. Hopefully I'll see it before or by the 5th. I took a week of leave from work to start cleaning up the house and hopefully enjoy my new system.

I posted a couple pages back about my hilarious discussion with Dell, attempting to cancel and reorder a differently configured system with the 6990 instead of the 6870. They told me it was ready for shipment and couldn't be canceled and I would receive it by 3/6.

I am stunned to report that they apparently changed my 7 day shipping to 2 days with Saturday delivery. It's on the FedEx truck on its way to my house as we speak.

Ya know what they say about the squeaky wheel. Keep at them, all you people waiting on the 580 card. Dell will make it right for you but only if you keep the pressure up!

Yep, they moved me from the 24th to the 2nd, they keep adding a week. My rep says 1st week of march so thats what im shooting for.

Thats possible, considering what dell has told me about when the 580m is coming in.

I really disappointed. As big as dell is, and as many of these as they sell i would have expected them to have a few on hand. But what can you do lol, at least they knocked some bucks off for my time.

Maybe I'll be able to get some $$$ knocked off my order. I've already saved a ton, plus ordering through AAFES I kinda fall under a different category of consumer, so I might not get any discount. Either way, I hope we get our systems the first week of March.

Like i said, when i talked to a sales manager, i told them look this is unacceptable. They asked me what they could do, i said i would like some compensation, at least something, for my time and they knocked a few hundred off.

I'll wait until my EDD. If it doesn't ship by then, I'll call and see what they'll do. As I said, since I ordered through AAFES, I fall under a different consumer. I won't deal with the same sales department as you did. I'll end up speaking to an EEP sales department. I'm still going to call and see what they will do. It won't hurt to call.

So I called up to upgrade the warranty on my order to 3 years and was told the ETS has changed to the 7th from the 28th. Needless to say I was/Am pretty damned pissed off about it, they agreed to upgrade my shipping to overnight instead of the 5 days it normally takes. That would get it in my hands close to the same time as shipping on the 28th. Also she upgraded me to a priority build (or at least placated me enough on the phone where I let her off the line). I will update you guys to the actual received date when I see it.

Have you gotten any deals from them? Tell them your thinking about cancelling due to order issues. I bet they try and cut you some deals at least. They have put time into the order as well.

My EDD is still listed as the 3/7 (ordered 2/14) if it goes a day beyond that I am going raise a storm.

So far just the Next Business day delivery, unfortunately I am working this through a 3rd party reseller and there responsiveness has gone down since I place the order.

I am extremely tempted just to cancel the entire order any way but I am going to hang in there until the 7th. After that all bets are off.

Just got off the phone with my rep. He said he got a response from the manufacturer on the 25th stating that the part is still back ordered and pending arrival. Pretty much what I've gathered from my rep is that the 580m can come in anytime from today until the 15th (which is their expected delivery date). They tend to get the parts sooner then their expected date. My order still says the 1st, but I am positive that it will change to either the 5th (that's the date my rep keeps saying) or the 7th like most of you guys. I placed my order on the 6th thinking it would take 2-3 weeks to deliver. Looks like it'll be over a month. If it gets delayed past next week I might have to cancel the order due to time constraints. As with the rest of you guys, this is really pissing me off.

Well at least the hemming and hawing I did before ordering didn't cost me any time. I had the money on the 8th, and even if I ordered that day (instead of a week later) I wouldn't have seen the system any sooner.

I'm not sure how they are rolling these orders out. My guess is that they are filling the requests by the dates that they were ordered. For example, your EDD might say the 7th and mine might get moved to the 7th. If my order is actually sent out on the 7th, that doesn't mean yours will too. You might get bumped another week because of the dates that we placed our orders and how many 580Ms that they received. Not saying that this is how it will happen, just my theory on it.

Oh yes I am aware, my rep called again today to swear that the 7th still looks good. But he could be clueless though he keeps calling the "factory" or at least putting me on hold for a few minutes while he watches a YouTube video.. one or the other.

All this order shenanigans makes me nervous for sure, and I am not very patient to begin with, especially with 3k of my money.

Hello my name is Juan, the small community of Spain Alienware.

From what I see, you have the same problems as us with the stock GTX580 does not?

( sorry for my bad english...)

    .We have lied
    .The order status is correct
    .Have no nebula red casing.
.We have no stock of hdd
.We have no stock of GTX580...
    .Next week will be ready

and many of us have with the computer paid 1 month....

takes 5 days in production after a month in ongoing work

and we believe we are going to further postpone

you know something of the real problem?

    we are entitled to claim?

Dell uses our money like a bank?

Thank you very much and sorry for bothering! and for my bad English

I've never been blatantly lied to from Dell. They tell me that my EDD is still projected, but because of the delay it's not guaranteed. Hearing that, I'm not expecting my order to ship until probably next week. If I don't have it by the 10th, then I'll definitely be getting on Dell and will probably have to cancel. I really hope it doesn't come down to that.

About all we can do is hope for the best at this point, although them holding onto my funds for almost a month without anything to show for it rankles a bit. They shouldn't get jack until it's been shipped, IMO. Oh well.

I received an email last night from the rep at Dell I have been dealing with. Unfortunately it is the exact same thing he said to me over the phone a few days ago; he just changed the EDD. I guess they just follow a script. I had seriously thought about changing my order but at this point I guess I'll just wait it out. My luck there would be a 6990M shortage...

For now I'll just have to stare at the RAM and SSD sitting on my desk and pretend...

Usually they'll update your EDD the day your order was supposed to ship. I've gotten that same response when calling my Dell rep. Apparently he's sent two requests to expidite my order. Will that have any effect on my order? Probably not. Still hopeful to see it by next week.

If the parts are in-stock the expedite orders actually do work (assuming they get approved).

When I got my replacement the guy put in an expedite order and mine went from building to on my doorstep in 5 business days, when the current lead time for new units was 10 business days.

I was so lucky though, I got my replacement right before the 580m went out of stock, I would be dying if I got caught in this like 1 month delay waiting for a 580m.

Yeah, with this long of a wait, the owner experience had better be way the hell up there...

I just hope with all these back-ordered M17's that when the GPU's do come in they don't rush them out the door. I will be a little miffed if I wait for over a month and they just threw the thing together to get it out the door and I spend another month sorting out issues.

I have this vision of a long production table with 20 M17x's all mostly constructed just waiting on video cards.

I call BS! I'm waiting on my replacement rig (580m), so I check my status on dell.com. No EDD :( I called and was placed on hold for over 10min! The rep said the 2nd... meaning this Friday is my ship date. I just placed this order on the feb.27th... I call BS.

Not positive on this, but replacement systems may get referb equipment which in this case is a good thing, you might not have to wait for this back order of 580's to clear up.
