Hi all, I'm new here so I wanted to say hello and get opinions on my recent Alienware M17x R3 purchase. I've owned the M11x and M14x (all purchased from Dell Outlet) but this will be my first brand new purchase. I'm also pretty good with computers having built several gaming desktops, but laptop gaming is still fairly new to me.
Here are the main specs:
i7 2670QM
GTX 580M
8GB 1600mhz Ram
750GB HD
1080p 120hz 3D Screen
Intel 2x2 Wireless
I guess my biggest concern is should I have gone with the 2760QM since it supports 1600mhz ram? I play mostly BF3 right now but would like to run the new Ghost Recon and other FPS on pretty high settings for the next 1-2 years. Will that be possible with the 2670 or no? I'd appreciate some feedback.

ah, Welcome to the community -
Not a refurb. I watched (via alien contact) as they placed my order. I'm thinking... they have the 580m's in stock now?
-
When I was researching cpu's I noticed the 2670QM is ranked above my desktop i7 930...I was shocked! My desktop handles everything I throw at it so I figured the 2670QM had to be pretty decent. I was just concerned after I placed my order with the compatibility of the 1600mhz ram.
Another question if you don't mind? Would a ssd make a bigger difference (in performance) with my current build or would the 2760QM have made a bigger difference? I would never buy a ssd from Dell because of the price...but I'm just curious.
ps. this may be stupid but how do I edit my signature? There isn't an option in my profile editor. -
Also, 580m's are not in stock for repairs or refurbs either, last I heard it was going to be March 9th before they had 580m's for repairs or outlet units. -
-
Definately go for the SSD, install your OS and games there. It shows a great amount of difference as compared to a regular HDD.

If u cant access this, maybe u need more posts. Im not sure regarding this. -
My order status still shows the 7th as my EDD, but my resolution expert confirmed with me this morning that parts are back ordered and that was likely to change. -
If in the future though I wanted to upgrade CPU, could it be done? -
Yes u can upgrade your CPU.
Here is an illustrated guide on the same:

Well I feel 100x better about my purchase now. After I clicked purchase the thought "did I really just spend $2300 on a laptop?!" crossed my mind and I was kind of sick to my stomach. I think it comes from owning the M11x and M14x and knowing there's not to much in the upgrade/future proof department. But now knowing how great/easy the M17x will be to stay current gives me the confidence I won't need to sell it in a year.
I'm stoked on the M17x and can't wait to get it in my hands! It might take over my desktop as favorite computer. -
Mind you, 580M GPU cards are out of stock, so you from the very start need to keep in mind u might have to wait for a while ( a long full of anxiety while ) for your toy -
Microsoft Flight is coming out tomorrow so I'll be on my desktop for a while

yea, that's why I called BS... under my EDD it only said (N/A) so I called. I doubt they have their info straight. Just a shame a company like dell can't even furnish their employees with accurate info, especially since such information is germane to the products dell is selling. We all get fed different info... all the time

This now irritates me. I need to stop looking!

Holy flip flopping.
Just got a call from my Dell resolution expert, telling me now we are still good for the 7th EDD, he 'fully' expects the 580m's to be in time to meet this deadline.
I swear I feel like I am on a roller coaster here. -
-
Friday is the earliest they are expecting to receive the 580m
So I guess I won't be getting my rig shipped on Friday
but blah... at least it's coming
-
Ordered from the outlet today...
Can't wait! -
-
Just ordered mine with a EDD of 3/9. Hopefully I'll be seeing it soon!

*UPDATE*
Got a call today. My case manager told me they are expecting to receive 580ms this week, by Friday. He said he is unsure of how many systems are waiting on the chips, but i should get mine by the end of next week, early the week after. He said he couldnt give me a definite time, but he would call me if anything came up.
Wait and see time.... -
-
At any rate, we should see ours soon, youre the day after me if i remember right?
-
That is correct. Ordered mine on the 6th, but it didn't process until the 7th. The last time I spoke with my Dell rep, he kept saying that the target date of the 5th is still expected. The thing is, my EDD is the 1st, so I hope that's a sign I'm one of the next in line.

I'm in the same boat as Tayer. My m17x broke Jan.17, and after waiting almost 2 weeks for repair box for arrive (Dell's fault) I had sent in on Feb. 9th which I was told would need to be replaced. After waiting over 2 weeks for them to hopefully receive a refurb that would matched my original specs, I was told I was getting a brand-new system built. Order was placed Feb. 27.
Here's the config: Nebula Red, 2670QM, 4GB RAM 1600mhz, 750GB HDD, 1.5GB GTX560m
Now I'm very nervous about how long this can take to get a new laptop. I don't think I can bear waiting another month for a replacement, as I have been without a laptop for 1.5 months already.
After reading thru this whole thread and I can't believe some of you guys will be waiting almost a month or more to receive your laptop. I really hope this is just for people who ordered a nvidia GTX580m.
I really need a laptop badly, like yesterday. I am typing all this on my fiancee's little m14x, which has been straining my eyes and severely ruining my KDR in Warrock.
Do you guys think its possible I could ask to get a refurbished m18x, if one is available on the Dell refurbish site instead of waiting a month for a replacement system to be built?
Any advice? -
-
Just went through a config of a 3D M17x and the GTX 580m wasn't even an option anymore. Only the 560
-
I wonder if that is because of the throttling issue or over-demand. But then again it is still an option in the m18x -
-
Called in again today and Dell is still giving my an estimated shipping date of 3/7. Of course this really means very little as my estimated ship date of 2/28 was still showing a couple days before they missed it.
Had to verify for myself and the 580M is not being offered currently, probably tired of all the production delays. -

Also, I would recommend an SSD as the best possible upgrade for a computer. The overall difference is wonderful. The only down side is you will never want to go back.
Edit: I also feel bad for everyone waiting on a 580m. Good luck, and I hope you receive your beasts soon. -
Looks like the 580M is about to be replaced it has been pulled from most of the Sager Model offerings as well, judging from posts in the Sager/Clevo section here.
-
On another note, just heard from my rep that I am on the list for the next shipment and that they will be filled in order of purchase. Looks as if they are expecting their shipment soon. This is the first time he has said something other than,"We are still waiting to hear back from the manufacturer." Fingers still crossed. -

One of you is going to be pissed! I just was approved for a "rush" on my rig
I'm getting on the boat for this next shipmentsomeone is going to drown...
-
Besides, I think all of our orders are in "rush" order status because of the delay. -
