Hi all, I'm new here so I wanted to say hello and get opinions on my recent Alienware M17x R3 purchase. I've owned the M11x and M14x (all purchased from Dell Outlet) but this will be my first brand new purchase. I'm also pretty good with computers having built several gaming desktops, but laptop gaming is still fairly new to me.

    Here are the main specs:

    i7 2670QM
    GTX 580M
    8GB 1600mhz Ram
    750GB HD
    1080p 120hz 3D Screen
    Intel 2x2 Wireless

I guess my biggest concern is should I have gone with the 2760QM since it supports 1600mhz ram? I play mostly BF3 right now but would like to run the new Ghost Recon and other FPS on pretty high settings for the next 1-2 years. Will that be possible with the 2670 or no? I'd appreciate some feedback.

Gaming is more demanding of GPU than of CPU. 2670QM is fine. You have the 580M card, which is best in the market right now, so your gonna be just fine :)

ah, Welcome to the community :)

Not a refurb. I watched (via alien contact) as they placed my order. I'm thinking... they have the 580m's in stock now?

    Thank you very much!

When I was researching cpu's I noticed the 2670QM is ranked above my desktop i7 930...I was shocked! My desktop handles everything I throw at it so I figured the 2670QM had to be pretty decent. I was just concerned after I placed my order with the compatibility of the 1600mhz ram.

Another question if you don't mind? Would a ssd make a bigger difference (in performance) with my current build or would the 2760QM have made a bigger difference? I would never buy a ssd from Dell because of the price...but I'm just curious.

ps. this may be stupid but how do I edit my signature? There isn't an option in my profile editor.

Replacements get new systems. They may have them in stock, or you may get an email the 2nd saying it has been delayed.

Also, 580m's are not in stock for repairs or refurbs either, last I heard it was going to be March 9th before they had 580m's for repairs or outlet units.

I think you will see a much bigger difference with an SSD than going from a 2670 to a 2760.

SSD! :D Definately go for the SSD, install your OS and games there. It shows a great amount of difference as compared to a regular HDD.

Sad to say I doubt it Tayer, I think your in the same boat as the rest of us waiting on the GTX 580m's

My order status still shows the 7th as my EDD, but my resolution expert confirmed with me this morning that parts are back ordered and that was likely to change.

Awesome...that makes me feel better about my purchase now! I was freaking out thinking man I may have just chose an option that would make my new machine obsolete in a year! It's a good thing I cancelled my original order and upgraded to the 580 from the 560.

If in the future though I wanted to upgrade CPU, could it be done?

560M would have been a bad investment!

Yes u can upgrade your CPU.
Here is an illustrated guide on the same:

Wow that's about as easy as replacing a desktop cpu, if not easier! In a year or two if I need more performance it's nice knowing the option is out there. Man, I'm loving this laptop more and more and I haven't even received it yet haha!

Seriously, the thing that really attracts me towards this beastly laptop is the fact that it looks awesome, runs awesome and almost all parts are up-gradable! So its future proof :)

    Thanks Galbaltrox9, you've been a huge help!

Well I feel 100x better about my purchase now. After I clicked purchase the thought "did I really just spend $2300 on a laptop?!" crossed my mind and I was kind of sick to my stomach. I think it comes from owning the M11x and M14x and knowing there's not to much in the upgrade/future proof department. But now knowing how great/easy the M17x will be to stay current gives me the confidence I won't need to sell it in a year.

I'm stoked on the M17x and can't wait to get it in my hands! It might take over my desktop as favorite computer.

Mind you, 580M GPU cards are out of stock, so you from the very start need to keep in mind u might have to wait for a while ( a long full of anxiety while ) for your toy :)

yea, that's why I called BS... under my EDD it only said (N/A) so I called. I doubt they have their info straight. Just a shame a company like dell can't even furnish their employees with accurate info, especially since such information is germane to the products dell is selling. We all get fed different info... all the time :(

That would be a funny sight, but I believe that our systems aren't even partially built yet. I'm thinking that all the parts that are in stock have been consolidated into an area. Once the back ordered parts come in, that's when they'll put them together. Let's just say that an order of 580ms came in and one of those are for my system. I doubt that it'll be put together, quality checked, and shipped by tomorrow so I'll get it on my EDD. Best case scenario for me would be next week. My gut is telling me between the 10th and 20th. I really hope it's wrong.

    Holy flip flopping.

Just got a call from my Dell resolution expert, telling me now we are still good for the 7th EDD, he 'fully' expects the 580m's to be in time to meet this deadline.

I swear I feel like I am on a roller coaster here.

Perhaps they are expecting a shipment in by the end of this week. He could also be saying what they are supposed to say. Pretty much all you can do is wait until your EDD. Also, keep an eye out for one of us to post that our system has shipped. Either your system will ship shortly after ours, or add the difference in the days between our orders. Hopefully your guy is right and we all get our systems next week.

    *UPDATE*

Got a call today. My case manager told me they are expecting to receive 580ms this week, by Friday. He said he is unsure of how many systems are waiting on the chips, but i should get mine by the end of next week, early the week after. He said he couldnt give me a definite time, but he would call me if anything came up.

    Wait and see time....

That is correct. Ordered mine on the 6th, but it didn't process until the 7th. The last time I spoke with my Dell rep, he kept saying that the target date of the 5th is still expected. The thing is, my EDD is the 1st, so I hope that's a sign I'm one of the next in line.

I'm in the same boat as Tayer. My m17x broke Jan.17, and after waiting almost 2 weeks for repair box for arrive (Dell's fault) I had sent in on Feb. 9th which I was told would need to be replaced. After waiting over 2 weeks for them to hopefully receive a refurb that would matched my original specs, I was told I was getting a brand-new system built. Order was placed Feb. 27.

    Here's the config: Nebula Red, 2670QM, 4GB RAM 1600mhz, 750GB HDD, 1.5GB GTX560m

Now I'm very nervous about how long this can take to get a new laptop. I don't think I can bear waiting another month for a replacement, as I have been without a laptop for 1.5 months already.

After reading thru this whole thread and I can't believe some of you guys will be waiting almost a month or more to receive your laptop. I really hope this is just for people who ordered a nvidia GTX580m.

I really need a laptop badly, like yesterday. I am typing all this on my fiancee's little m14x, which has been straining my eyes and severely ruining my KDR in Warrock.

Do you guys think its possible I could ask to get a refurbished m18x, if one is available on the Dell refurbish site instead of waiting a month for a replacement system to be built?

    Any advice?

The only card that has a delay is the 580m. You'll only encounter a delay if any of your system parts are delayed. Go to the Alienware site and configure a laptop to your specs. It will tell you if there will be a delay.

I did also and came here to say the same thing but you beat me to it :D

I wonder if that is because of the throttling issue or over-demand. But then again it is still an option in the m18x

Yes I noticed it was still an option on the M18x as well. Though it did push the EDD to almost the end of March when selected. Either its a supply issue (and they left it on the M18 because they knew some would just demand the dual config) or the throttling issue

Called in again today and Dell is still giving my an estimated shipping date of 3/7. Of course this really means very little as my estimated ship date of 2/28 was still showing a couple days before they missed it.

Had to verify for myself and the 580M is not being offered currently, probably tired of all the production delays.

You can most definitely upgrade your CPU later. It's probably the the most easily accessible I've seen in a laptop. (I would recommend keeping the old one as long as you gave warranty, though.)

Also, I would recommend an SSD as the best possible upgrade for a computer. The overall difference is wonderful. The only down side is you will never want to go back. ;)

Edit: I also feel bad for everyone waiting on a 580m. Good luck, and I hope you receive your beasts soon. :)

Looks like the 580M is about to be replaced it has been pulled from most of the Sager Model offerings as well, judging from posts in the Sager/Clevo section here.

That could just mean there is a mass shortage right now. I've seen both the 580m and 6990m get pulled from an order page only to be put back up a few weeks later.

On another note, just heard from my rep that I am on the list for the next shipment and that they will be filled in order of purchase. Looks as if they are expecting their shipment soon. This is the first time he has said something other than,"We are still waiting to hear back from the manufacturer." Fingers still crossed.

Doubt you get pushed ahead of us. We've all been put in as "rush" order well before you. Does it mean anything if your order was sent in "rush" status more than once?

Besides, I think all of our orders are in "rush" order status because of the delay.
