I just heard some horrific news from my Dell rep. He just emailed me and said that the 580m is still on back order and they won't be in stock until the 15th of March. If they aren't able to get any sooner, it'll look as if I'll have to cancel my order and reorder in England. Just checked the AAFES site and the 580m has gone up in price since my last order. Figured this would happen. Wish I had more time here. Looks like I won't be enjoying my Alienware on my flight to England :-(

That sucks!
I ordered mine on Feb 19th and got an initial delivery date of March 9th...checked again the next day, and saw it was bumped up to March 2nd, then later that day, it got bumped all the way back to March 15th. I ordered the 580m also, through AAFES. I'm not canceling my order based on this news, though, as that will be counter-productive. I had the choice of ordering through dell (I've a credit account with them), but the tax savings is substantial, so I'll stick with AAFES. Based on your news, I might expect to see my delivery date adjusted yet again (probably toward the backend of March).
I did order two 750GB drives in RAID 0...been thinking on if would be better to have one SSD and one 750GB drive (been reading some articles about RAID 0 not quite being a good substitution for SSD, as well as data integrity issues due to drives going bad). I guess I can use this delay time to muse over if it's worth canceling and reordering. -
The threat of canceling my order was more of an emotional response. I really don't want to do it. I want this rig bad, but because of my situation, I might have to cancel, or perhaps reorder with a 6990m instead. I just hope I can still get the 10% discount from AAFES again. If not, I sure hope Dell will give me a decent discount. I'm going to hold on as long as possible, but if they truly won't be getting any 580m cards in until the 15th, then by the first of March I need to decide to cancel or change my order. I can't wait until the end of the month for the delivery, I won't be living in the country at that time.
-
My order statues still says 2/24/12, does yours say 3/15/12? I called dell and spoke too 2 different techs, both have told me i would receive my laptop this Friday (not sure how true it is, just yet) Dell may be telling you the worst case scenario, under promise over deliver type thing.
-
Mine still says March 1st. I have chatted online with 3 reps and they keep saying "we assure you your laptop will be delivered on the expected delivery date". That might just be something that they say to everyone. When I called and actually got a case open (they did it without my request), he told me that there is no guarantee that it will ship on time because of the back order. I do hope it is a worst case scenario and that they will actually get their shipment in early and deliver my rig on time. Please keep us posted on your status and if you get yours on Friday. Best of luck.
-
Yeah i have a case open as well. I sure hope it gets here Friday, if it does ill post it here and let you know. What is the last day you have to receive yours at your current address? -
Unfortunately, I think they just repeat what the EDD on your order says. I'm not holding my breath for mine to be here on the 24th and I guess I'm just going to wait it out. Of course by the time it gets here the R4's will be coming out.
-
I'm not exactly sure what my last day here is. Moving while in the military can be a hassle at times. I might be out the 10th or the 25th. I'm going to try and schedule everything as late as possible though. Hopefully everything works out for us.
-
Well I called Dell yesterday, random rep told me I was still scheduled for the 7th of March. She supposedly called the factory and confirmed all was good. But the rep on my 'case' is supposed to get in touch with me today he was out yesterday. But I hope the news is all good.
-
Keep us posted on what he tells you. When did you place your order? My rep is suppose to call or email me today with an update from the manufacturer. Once he does, I'll let you guys know what he said.
-
Ordered Feb 14th, EDD still March 7th
Will post as I know more as well.

Called today, and spoke with another rep. They keep telling me it should ship tomorrow. I think they are blowing smoke up my but i guess well see friday. Anyone else got any updates?
-
I guess just keep an eye on your order status page then. It should update tomorrow stating it shipped. I honestly hope it does for you. I haven't heard word back yet, but might give my guy a call here soon.
-
I will tonight and tomorrow. If it says shipped tomorrow ill post an update. I cant imagine them needing an entire month to get such a common video card in. I can understand a week or maybe 2 but not a whole month.
-
I agree. Plus they are still only showing a 7 day delay on the card. Perhaps that with each order they get, they place an order for the card. I've seen other delays on their site that say 22 days. So I'm hoping that we aren't actually all waiting on a bulk shipment, but perhaps smaller shipments.
-
Still can't get a hold of my supposed rep on file, but had another one again tow the line that nothing has been delayed at this point...

Seems like that would be the smart way to do it, a bunch of small shipments, maybe they order x number of units in a week or something. Did you get a call from your rep yet?
-
No call yet. He emailed me around 6 pm yesterday, so I expect to hear from him a little later. I'm about to head to the gym. I'll probably give him a call on my way home.
-
My EDD still shows 2/24 but I did not get an updated one (previously the 17th) until the day it was supposed to be delivered but hopefully yours does ship as that would be a good sign for the rest of us...
-
Same thing happened to me, they didnt update till the 17th. Fingers crossed it ships tomorrow.
UPDATE:
Just got a call from the manager in charge of my case. He said that he finally got a response from the techs building the machine, and the cards are back ordered until at least the end of next week (the end of February essentially). So it looks like the earliest I could receive it would be the first week of march. Anyone else get a call from dell?
Regards,
Howard -
Just talked to my Dell rep and he told me the cards are still back ordered until the 15th of March. He said there's a good possibility the cards will be in sooner, but it looks as though our orders may be delayed. I'm seriously considering canceling this order and switching to the 6990m. According to him, they'll just transfer the amount I paid over to the new system. I'll probably end up getting the backpack and $100 gift card if I do; even though I already bought the backpack on eBay. Perhaps I can haggle and get a discount, or more to my liking, the Razer Mamba mouse. Looks like I'll have a lot to think about.
-
Yeah, that might be something to consider. Ill still stick to the 580 because i prefer nvidia, but the cards are very similar spec wise.
-
M17 arrived here at FOB Fenty, Jalalabad Afghanistan today. Ordered 9 Feb so 14 days from order to delivery with the 6990m.
Initial impressions are good but I'm a little disappointed in the low WEI rating of the HDD, got the 7200 RPM 750GB, won't complain though, going to relegate it to data storage and go with an Intel 256GB for the boot. -
Congratulations on the great new rig!
I always get WEI of 5.9 with any 7200 RPM drive I've ever tried. I put in a SATA III 512GB Crucial M4 and it gets a WEI of 7.9 which is the max right now, I think. My overal WEI is a 7.5 but that's due to the processor score. -
Congrats on the system. What's your impression of the 6990m? I think I'm going to switch my order today to that card. Should get my system by the end of next week, or early the week after. Might be able to haggle for an extended warranty or something.
Anyone who ordered recently get their $100 gift card early? Not sure if I'll be around when that gets sent out. I'll probably just have my mail either forwarded to a friends house here, or I'll have it forwarded to someone in England (not sure if they'll give me my PO Box info before I get there). -
At this point I can't say good or bad about the card, I unpacked the computer, plugged it in and ran the WEI testing. The screen has no dead pixels upon initial observation but aside from that I haven't had time to inspect anything. I'm at work and it's really dusty in this area so I plan on setting it up in the B-Hut room I live in tonight and downloading the GPUz program and checking it out from there. I have a couple of games out here I can install however I don't think either of them (MW3 and World in Crisis) is going to tax the card enough to give any definitive answer as to the quality.
-
Congrats on your system! Still nothing from my case rep, going to call him all freaking day today till he finally picks up the phone.

Will be starting a thread below with initial impressions after a more thorough inspection.
-
My estimated ship date is 2/28, with the 580M. I had ordered mine weeks ago and god help Dell if it doesn't ship on time. My patience is wearing very thin with the delays but I still don't want an ATI card.
-
Well, not to sound like an , but deal with delays and get a card that may or may not throttle you out of gaming............I prefer Nvidia myself, but I prefer functionality more than blind brand loyalty. -
For true, as much as I don't want to wait, with the 3D screen I have to have Nvidia (which I prefer anyway), and I want the highest end card they can throw in there. So wait I will, just not be happy about it really.
-
Don't blame you about not being happy, on the plus side maybe they'll fix the throttling issue by the time you get it.
-
My date is still March first. Though speaking with my rep, it doesn't sound like it will ship then. I think I'm gonna switch my order today unless he tells me some really good news. I've done a ton of research, and I really doubt I'm gonna notice much difference between the cards. This will be my first dealings with ATI GPUs, so I am nervous and excited at the same time. All in all if I'm not satisfied, I'll see if I can get the card replaced, or I'll just return my laptop for a refund. Doubt it would come to that.
-
That would be nice! Not expecting it though.
-
Mine says it will be here tomorrow, but the reps are saying last week of February maybe the first week of march. Some people are saying mid march so im thinking they are getting a bunch of small deliveries. I guess the only way to see when it gets to the door haha.
-
I placed an order for an M17xR3 last Sunday. Had to configure it within available money but have had second thoughts about doing that and want a system with higher end components. So, this morning I called to cancel the order, and reorder.
The Customer Care person asked me why I wanted to cancel, I explained why, and he offers me $100 not to cancel. I decline, saying please cancel the order.
He puts me on hold, comes back and says, I am sorry the order can't be cancelled, it is packed and ready for shipment.
But but but, you just offered me $100 NOT to cancel! He says when you get delivery if you want to keep laptop call and we will credit you the $100. And if you want to return it there will be no restocking fee.
Win/win ... but seriously, that conversation almost made my head explode! -
Dell has always had a hart time managing communication between divisions. That's probably what happened here, there was miscommunication between CS and production.
-
Actually, they only offer money not to cancel when the laptop is already built. If you call in like the day after you make the order, and they haven't actually made the machine yet, they will let you cancel and offer nothing.
However, once a machine is built it is cheaper to give you a discount to keep it, rather than try to figure out what to do with the already assembled machine. In this case he could see that he was able to offer you the discount, then when he tried to cancel the order it wasn't possible since the machine had already shipped. -
I tried to cancel my order and haggled until they gave me $300 back to keep it.
-
I tried to return cause I wanted a 6990m. Called Dell and they gave me 78 bucks back to not return.
Made some lame excuses to Alienware technical support and they ended up upgrading me to the 6990m and 1080p screen with a minimum fee. -
I agree. I have the machined specced just the way I want in and I have been waiting forever. I have had the 580M in another machine and its is an awesome card plus this machine has the better screen.
The Throttling crap seems to be a Dell issue and I am not shy about complaining when this much cash is at stake. I would love to get it in to see if I have a good unit or a dud out of the box already. The suspense is killing me. -
Just got off the phone with Dell and my head is still spinning. Apparently it's not gonna be as easy for me to cancel and reorder as originally stated. I have to cancel through AAFES, then wait up to 72 hours before I can us my Military Star Card (I get a 10% discount on my purchase). Originally Dell said they would just transfer the the balance across.
I'm at a bit of a crossroad right now. If I do cancel and wait a few days to reorder, I'll fall into the $100 gift card Dell is offering plus an Alienware Tact-X headset through AAFES. My projected delivery date will be around the 10th I'm guessing. Would probably get it sooner if nothing is delayed. Now my Dell rep said that they might be getting some 580m cards in tomorrow. If they do, then my order should be on time. But that's a big if. Such a difficult decision right now. I'm starting to lean towards waiting now. Although the free stuff would be great. But if my order does delay to the 15th, I'll either have to cancel, or see if I can get the order shipped to my sponsors house in England. Damn this delay. Damn it to hell, lol. -
Again called up Dell, still good on the 7th my EDD. My 'resolution expert' who doesn't return my phone calls, is supposed to call me the moment my status changes...#notholdingbreath
-
Humm since me and you ordered our system so close together, we may get them by the middle of next week.
-
I sure hope so. I'm pretty much at the point of just waiting it out now. I have a feeling that if I cancel and reorder with the 6990m, the 580m will be in stock and my original order would have been received sooner. I hate doing this waiting game. I wish I would have ordered it a week sooner when I was researching which laptop I wanted.
-
Ordered 2/17, went into production that day (says the website) - EDD 3/2 with next day shipping. I ordered with the 6990m card. No changes in EDD as of yet.
I need to stop checking the order status page
-
Unless something drastic happens, you should get your order on time or early. It's us that are waiting for the 580m that need to stop checking the order status page 👽
-
Dell isn't known for updating that Order Status page faithfully, don't be surprised if it still says "In Production" after you receive it.
-
Dell called me this afternoon and still said they should get the cards on the 5th but maybe earlier. But then he advised me that I may want to change my order??? That wasn't too reassuring...
It just seems like everyone is getting a different story.
Luckily he's been pretty good about getting back to me. He said he would give me another update Tuesday. -
Just wanted to give you guys a heads up on something. My 580m died last week Thursday. I called Dell and got them to send me a replacement card. I was told there was a backorder on the card, and that it wouldn't be available until March 9th or so.
To my surprise, my replacement card showed up today. So maybe there is hope that they are arriving slowly but surely?
