The thing is, I don't think anyone can actually find the system right now. FedEx might actually already have it, so a delivery by tomorrow might be possible. Still waiting to hear back from Dell. Oh, and they know just how unhappy I am, trust me. And throwing me an extra ~$100 isn't really going to cut it. As I get older, my time gets to be more precious (to me, at least) and I take it very unkindly when it is wasted (unless I am the one wasting it).

To keep things in perspective, this isn't even close to being the worst thing that has ever happened to me, so it isn't the end of the world. Just very, very annoying. But I am confidant it will be remedied to my satisfaction, one way or another.

Glad someone got theirs. Finally got an update on mine (which I had to call back to get): Arrived from China to Nashville and apparently then got "lost". No quality control issue at all; it just simply got lost. Now it won't ship out until Monday at the earliest. And Dell's retention strategy? "We're sorry." Awesome. I really hope the Dell execs that supposedly watch these forums are seeing this.

Am i missing out for not getting 3820qm.... Ill probably keep the laptop for a year to a year and a half and nothing more demanding than gaming... :( if its even a one fps difference it matters to me

Well, if having the highest FPS ever is the most important to you, then you should have really maxe absolutely everything out. The graphics of games relies very heavily on GPUs and not the CPUs. The CPU you got is more than fast enough to handle whatever the GPU throws at it (because I believe whatever the GPU processes goes to and from the CPU... i think--or something along those lines).

In fact, I think that you should have gone the m18x route and get dual 7970Ms... that would have made you unstoppable.

I concur with blue. If money is of no concern to you then you should have gone with M18x and maxed everything out.

And speaking of order status I put in my order on 5/25 and still no news of when it might be shipping to me. So far this has been one downside of purchasing from a reseller; lack of continuous communication with respect to my laptop order status. Hopefully next week.

I decided not to go with 18 because it was too large.
Also I never said miney is of no concern to me, but i would be willing to pay an extra 200$ to max out my config.

But as blue said, if it has 0 effect on game performance then im fine. :)

Well if 1 fps matters then get the 3820qm like i did. I knew I would regret it later if i didnt. The 3820 is more than just a 100mhz increase in clock because it also contains an additional 2 mb l3 cache. These things when added together will result in a slight fps increase in games such as starcraft 2 and other cpu intensive gaming. I probably wouldnt return the laptop if i were you but i would be slighly unsatisfied.

Personally, I don't think he will even see a 1+FPS difference. Sure, the 3820QM is faster spec and benchmark-wise; however, will games like Starcraft 2 and other CPU intensive games even use the full potential/processing capacity of the CPU?

And let's face it, can any non superhuman truly tell the difference between 60fps and 61fps or even 60fps and 65fps? Perhaps save the $200 for an awesome cooling pad, gaming mouse, and maybe even a gaming pad (like the Logitech G13).

And if you play online and intend to play wirelessly, then the better network card is more important.

It varies from game to game as to whether the CPU is the limitation. MMORPGs such as Warcraft and RTSs such as Starcraft rely heavily on the CPU because of the number of players/units on the screen, as well as AI and physics computation. The 3820QM is also more overclockable. Setting it as an Extreme Edition in the BIOS and setting overclocking to Level 3 has single core operations at 4.3Ghz and 4 core operations at 3.7Ghz. Mine has been stable so far at these settings, but I haven't done any heavy stress tests yet.

Yeah i read on here that the 3820qm could be overclocked 400 mhz. Thats gonna be one damn fast cpu. Especially for laptops and it kinda makes the real extreme edition 3920xm seem kind of useless because they have the same l3 cache sizes. Im quite glad i opted for it in my build and i just hope it ships soon. Edd is 22nd but i complaned and got free overnight so its all good.

EDD was bumped from 6/11 to 6/27 (after ordering on 5/29). Cancelled my order and bought the same config with 16gb of RAM from an excellent reseller I have done business with before. Should be here 6/13. Glad to be done with Dell's BS!

Hi new here and I placed order my m17x on June 1 and its expected arrival date is on June 22.

Currently on the website it says my order is in production, but when I called on my order status on the phone it states my order is still being processed.

    What does this mean?

Same exact situation happened for me. I ordered on the 3rd and when I call it says the same thing. So I called customer support and they looked into it for me and said it was not even in production yet and that they were getting parts together. The rep gave me free next day shipping and told me that it would be getting built on Monday (11th).

Same thing happened to me except they wouldn't let me cancel my order because it was in production already!

Anyway, the rep said I could return it for a full refund when I finally receive it. Trouble with that is Dell is holding onto my money...on a system like this (over $2500,) I don't have the resources to purchase another one until my refund is processed...so we are looking at June 27th for delivery, then a few days to return, a few days to process the return and a few days to return the money to my CC. Earliest is probably at this time in July.

Just great, anybody have a phone number to a sales rep I can call, I think I deserve the upgraded hard drive to the 750 gb and the upgraded ram to 8gb for this delay. And to think the day before I am supposed to receive the thing, and I have my 256 gb SSD sitting on my dresser ready to do that upgrade. This stinks......I ordered this laptop on 5/30.

    Dear Customer,
We wanted to let you know that there is a delay with one or more items in your order.

Based on the latest available information, we have adjusted your Estimated Delivery Date and your order is now projected to reach you on or before 6/29/2012

We are sorry for the delay and appreciate your patience.

Yeah delays do suck. I waited 5 weeks for my system.

Just call up your rep and see what compensation you can be awarded. Don't be a complete @$$ and try not to demand anything. Even threatening with canceling your order may not help your case. Depending on your rep, you may get what you want, or given alternatives.

Just don't expect them to give you the world because they don't have the supply to meet the demand atm. They can't predict when there is a shortage of parts, and they only get estimates on when the parts will be received.

The best thing you can do is call, be respectful, try to work with them, not against them. Good luck and keep us posted.

Edit: At the same time, let them know how upset you are about the delays, but try to stay as calm as possible. If you start to get the run around, or are being lied to or your rep is a complete @$$ to you, demand to speak to their manager, and then start to up channel your frustration.

I spoke with them and I am not the type to go off on them or anything, I did however remind them that this is my 4th Dell purchase. Granted they weren't high end gaming machines such as the M17X R4, nonetheless I have purchased 3 other laptops from them over the past 8yrs or so. But when I called them, they were pretty much yep its been delayed to the 29th, anything else I can help you with?

Sorry to hear about the delays with your orders, but you really should not stand for it guys.

Yes delays do happen, but they should not be so significant that they move your already confirmed EDD by 2 weeks or more.

Given that many of you probably don't need or want anything to do with dell support, just go through a reseller.

Cancel your orders, or if they don't let you, make the funds unavailable in your account (pull it to another or withdraw it to cash). Don't be Dell apologists!

You ordered yours through QVC if I remember correctly. I looked at that, you do realize that is an R3. The payment plan is nice, and if you are ok with the R3 then its all good. However if it is going to take that long I would go ahead and order through Dell with their preferred account and get it a little cheaper and you get the R4, but keep in mind that is just my opinion. I don't think they will auto upgrade you to the R4 if you order through QVC. QVC is like Wally World, they get good deals on items that aren't the latest and greatest. I just hope and prey that I do not have any problems with mine, if I do I will get my refund and choose another company. I have been loyal to Dell for the past 10 years, but that doesn't matter to them. Guess I will have to WAIT and see.

It's June 12th and the automated call is still stating it's being processed. How long does it take? lol

I know patience is a virtue but waiting sucks. Should I call a rep?

Being computerless is horribly boring, 2 weeks and counting.

I think I might have that situation figured out (no thanks to the companies involved), I'm 80% sure it's an R4 & that QVC are using old images & got the specs list jumbled, as I can't find their configuration anywhere else.
Dell discontinued the R3, correct? QVC doesn't ship this PC from their own warehouses, they come from Dell.

If this isn't the case, I still may just keep it as long as it meets my own needs.

Check dell outlet for R3's. Occasionally they have some so I assume it could possibly be an R3. You might want to check dell outlet and see if they have systems with similar specs.

You guys should post brief specs, to see if there's a pattern. It's likely one common component that they're waiting on a fresh supply of.

    Ordered 06/01/2012

    Alienware M17XR4 Black | 3610QM | 7970M | 16GB DDR3 | 120GB SSD, 500GB

Last update I got was from my Alienware rep, he was surprised that it had not shipped yet but is going to phone me back on Friday with an update. He figures it is due to the Ivy Bridge switch over...they have had a lot of demand because of how new it is and I guess it is backing things up a little. Mine still shows "In Production" with an estimated delivery of 06-25-2012 although I have heard from a few reps that it will probably be sooner. I have not called in at all yet except to inquire about overnight shipping which they don't have in Canada because we are so backwater that we hardly have running water apparently ( who does not have overnight shipping ) ..... Oh well, as long as it gets here before I leave on vacation at the end of the month.

I ordered mine on the 3rd of June and my EDD is the 21 with NBD shipping. It was the 22nd but he upgraded my shipping for free and so called "expedited" it in the system and he says that will put me ahead of others that ordered before me. yeah right....

With any luck ill have mine by Friday this week.

Looks like I have two M17x R4s arriving today...I guess Dell went from delaying my order to the 28th of this month to delivering it today.

I plan on refusing delivery of the reseller's machine, and just signing for the Dell one.

Here's hoping the Dell one isn't a lemon!

As with my previous M15x, expect both a comprehensive written review and a video review on my youtube channel soon! (youtube.com/arcade15).

Ok now I am totally confused, I called a Dell rep and she gave me a different site to go to to check the status, its showing "In Production". I went to the regular Dell site and its now showing "Shipped" with a Fed Ex ground tracking number. What am I supposed to believe? I just checked my email and I got a notification from Dell at approximately 11 am this morning saying it shipped yesterday. Crazy, I just hope its a good machine now matter when it comes in now, better sooner than later for me however.

Finally got to your PM and replied. I looked at the QVC link you sent me. While it doesn't say (not where I could see, maybe I missed it) it's an R4 or that the CPU is an Ivy Bridge, that's definitely an R4. You can tell by the GPU. The R3 shipped with 4xx and 5xx series Nvidias. That one says it's a 660m. I think you're right in that the unit ships from Dell and not a QVC warehouse. I'm pretty sure you will receive Ivy. If you don't, we can get you fixed up. Keep me posted and email me if you need me to engage.

If you got a FedEx tracking number from our site, that means, at this moment in time, the system is either actually on a truck (FedEx tracking status should tell the tale here), or it has been scanned in from a big palate waiting for a FedEx truck to show up and pick it up. If FedEx tracking status shows "unrecognized" or whatever the verbiage is, it's waiting for a truck to come pick it up. They normally scan it in at some point after they take it from us, and their tracking info gets updated.

    Ordered 5/24
    EDD 6/8
    Actual delivery 6/13

Just a quick warning to folks: If your EDD is fast approaching (like within a few days) and you are still "In Production", call Dell and make sure they know where your laptop is at. They lost mine and it took them most of last Friday to find it. Not a common problem, but according to the manager I dealt with, it is one that has happened more frequently as of late. Oh, and Dell's response? "Oops...sorry about some stuff". Happy with the product so far, but completely underwhelmed with the customer service.

    Ordered: 5/25
    EDD: 6/8
    Actual delivery: Still waiting

I ordered mine through a reseller so I expected my EDD to be a bit longer but so far even the reseller itself has not yet received the shipment through Alienware. As of right now I will consider myself lucky to have my order in my hands by the end of next week.

You might want to have Donald check with Dell as they had no idea mine was even lost until I called and told them something was wrong. In their systems it showed up as being "Shipped to Carrier" (even though it said "In Production" on my order status page).
