    Hello all

I order 2 laptops on 5 Dec and explained these were xmas presents for my 2 sons, my main concern was xmas delivery, I was told after she went and checked I had a 90% chance of getting them. She also told me on 20 Dec she could tell me one way or another if this was going to happen and I could cancel if I wished.

Today she still cant tell me, I only just saw my online order and its in production, so I dont know how long its been in that stage.

I guess I fear the worse now they are not going to come.

My delivery date is the 10 jan but at the start she told me not to worry about a long delivery date.

I feel I wish I had looked for alternative presents as how do you explain to kids on xmas day that their presents are coming 2 weeks later.

I am not at all techie, so when told I had a 90% chance of getting them I felt that waa just Dell giving them a slight get out clause inacse the unforseen happened.

Is there anything I can buy "off the shelf" that would be as good as this?

Spending £3000 and not having them xmas day is not the same im afraid.
I wish I had know better.

I have seen some computer shops in the states that sell the M17x R3 and M18x but not the new versions. I'm not sure how it works in your areas.

Have you checked Ebay? Down side is not having your 3k on account now just in case you need it for the order.

Normally from the in production stage it's about 8 days until shipped.

Looks like you'll miss the delivery, the machines are definitely worth the wait but not being able to have them to open xmas day isn't good.

I've never seen any off the shelf models which are comparable in specs, there are only other custom built ones.

Unless you could get an MSI with a good graphics card, but MSI are hard to come by in the uk and look cheap in comparison.

For sure. At least its still I'm December. I was hoping for early delivery on mine but its looking like its going to be closer to the original EDD. Dell did tell me that the completion date is guaranteed on or before the 4th. That doesn't change the delivery date by much tho.

I ordered my lap-top on the 9th of December, it says delivery date is 21 January, why so long for my order ? Does it usually take 40 days once
    you place your order ?

Unfortunately, yes it can take that long for you to receive your machine.

Alienware laptops take a minimum of 15 business days to build and a further minimum 5 business days to ship.
Dell's success and entire business plan rests on the fact they have virtually no stock inventory. Computer technology is infamous for losing value and becoming useless very quickly. Therefore, the parts for your AW laptop usually arent even in stock till you place your order.

Also bear in mind that those first 15 business days do not include payment processing and approval. Which can be a further full business week. Maybe more depending on your chosen payment method and financial istitution.

To be honest, I would rather they take their time and assemble (build) my laptop correctly and to the best quality control measures and test (burn) it in properly. Alienware machines have a minimum of 2 days of testing to assure your laptop has no faults.

Sorry to ramble on further, but you have also chosen probably the worst time of the year to order also. On top of your order time add a few days for Christmas day falling on a business day and also New Years.

    Good answer...

    Back to takovr...

If you take the time to read through this whole forum you will find that the average is 21 days + My order is set to deliver 45 days out from order date. It's Christmas at that. It's going to take quite a bit longer due to that. Don't worry tho. People are getting them sooner than EDD... It all depends on your options from what I've learned from this forum.

Thank you all for the replies, I did order it at the worst time of the year "Christmas".
I have never owned a Alienware lap-top before, I have always bought Toshiba lap-tops and
I would get them in about a week after placing my order. :)

This is my first Alienware also. I'm sure it's well worth the wait tho. It really does make you feel a bit better about waiting for it once you've read through every ones wait time and read their expressions on delivery. I'm only a couple weeks out from EDD (hopefully less) and super excited for that shipping notice to show.

I ordered a "Nebula red" lap-top also, That is why I think it is taking so long. I ordered a 240 gig intel ssd drive and a msata 64gig drive.
I plan on using the 240 intel ssd drive as a boot drive and the 64 gig msata drive for my games. I ordered my Alienware with the 750gig
drive and I will use that for storage.

Good pick. The black looks good but I wanted the red. The estimate shipping date when ordering varied about a week when I selected the Nebula Red. Might have been the same for you. Its going to be worth it tho.

Well its finally arrived and the machine is great. Eats many games with ease. Its been a 2 month wait which has been well worth it. I do have some questions thoe:

    1) I cant seem to find my Windows 8 COA. Ive even looked under the battery?
    2) I appear to be missing some screws for the spare drive caddie?

Did you ever get an answer on this from Dell?

Mine shipped today. EDD changed to the 4th :radar:. Super excited :D. Hoping I have the screws for the second drive. I don't want to have to wait to install it.

I did kind of. The Key for Windows 8 is Burnt into the BIOS, which makes sense. The screws im still discussing, I was hoping a rep here could help.

It was strange I had 2 on one side but not the other side. So my SSD is currently screwed in with 2 screws.

That's kinda scary. You would think that this would be an easy fix for tech. You should be able to find the screws at any computer store tho. Was the drive install easy? How about the memory? I get mine in today. That's the first two things I'm going to do.

To access memory(easy not under keybaoard) and HDD, you remove 1/2 screws to remove the bottom base then you will have access to 2 of the ram slots and the 2 hard drives which are further screwed in by 4 screws and then 4 screws will hold the hard drive in the caddy as well. Really easy, an you will not get lost easilly :). Apparently the other 2 slots for ram are quite hard to get to though.

Edit: I would recommend you just create a alien respawn dvd when you get it, then you can go ahead with removing the hard drives etc.

Nice... Thank you for that update. I was hoping I wouldn't have to access the ones under the keyboard.

I had planned on cloning the drive before the swap with the software supplied with my drives. Is re-spawn the same as cloning the drive or is it different?

Currently, I have an issue with cloning the drive tho. Windows 7 Ultimate is lists it as a clean install and not an upgrade option on the Microsoft website. I was going to wait to get my m17 to see if the OS can be upgraded or if it really needs a clean install. Its the only reason I would not use the clone program or re-spawn at this point

It makes a bootable windows installtion which is identical to what came factory, its good since you can keep the copies on a DVD or USB and it can be booted independent of a OS. A clean insgtall should be fine, especially if your going to be on a SSD, I'd rather install stuff then uninstall it. Plus you don't get those alignment issues etc. which slows down SSD performance.

Hope it comes on time :), enjoy your machine, I knew the feeling of being uber excited for it too :)

Forgive me if I'm posting this in the wrong place but may I ask if anyone has ordered an m17x from Xoticpc? I'm up in Canada and I placed an order with them on Dec 10, 2012 and still have no idea when my system is coming in. I have not been provided with an ETA after 40+ days of waiting. Is that normal? I will say, Xoticpc has been superb in regards to their customer service. They are very polite, helpful with most of my questions, and always respond to my emails quickly. However, this is my first time ordering from Xoticpc so I do lack buying experience with them. I'm hoping someone here can ease my mind a little.

Any status updates I receive from them are vague. I check in with them every couple weeks to try to get some sort of ETA and each time the response from them is the following:

"I understand, your concern. Please be advised that we are doing everything we can to get this order to you. Dell still has not given us a ETA, I spoke with our owner this morning about your order. He told me to have you check back in at the end of this week and I should have an answer for you by then. If anything comes in sooner, I will be sure and let you know!"

The last update I received that was actually posted to my account was on Jan 29, 2013. It states that my system is " In production at Dell awaiting for arrival at XOTIC PC for additional customization." But that's it, still no ETA and this is what's making me nervous. I can totally understand having to wait longer since I ordered it just before x-mas, but not being provided with some sort of ETA after waiting 40+ days is really starting to concern me.

Has anyone else had this type of waiting experience with ordering from Xoticpc? Please tell me I'm getting paranoid for nothing. I'm just worried that after waiting this long they could cancel the whole order on me if "business" is not working out between Xoticpc and Dell for whatever reason. Why can't Dell provide Xoticpc with an ETA? Or maybe it's really Xoticpc who is behind with a long line up of customizing??
    Cheers!

That's what happened with my system, from payment.. it took 2 months to arrive -.-

But not because of HIDevolution's fault (or in your case XoticPC's) ... but because of delays on some parts at Dell and they backordered the laptops a couple times etc it was pretty frustrating. Dell tends to be like that unfortunately /:

But I'm sure XoticPC is doing everything they can to ship it to you as soon as possible :)

Finally got the delivery confirmation for my m17x, i am impressed with alienware this time, not with tech support (fujitsu) or esclations manager though.

Took 8 services and over 6 weeks to try and and repair older unit. But took 2 weeks to get replacement build and delivered (delivery is 3 days away).

My m17x is now "in production" with an EDD of March 4th. So, basically two weeks time. :)

Just wondering, is there any chance that my laptop will arrive earlier than that? Perhaps in one week?

Possible but depends when you laptop leaves the 'in production' state once its built it will take a few days to arrive from china basically. Once tracking is sorted it should give you a better idea. I got mine a few days earlier than EDD.

Seems Dell has a new coupon on its website that would give me an additional $50 discount. I ordered a laptop through a sales rep by phone, but can I modify my order through customer care to replace one of the coupons already on the order without losing whatever the sales rep provided? My order is still "in production" as of now.

I don't think you can, you would have to do it as a new order, and once an order is in production it cant be cancelled unless you refuse delivery I think. Could be different for where you are as in the UK you don't pay restocking fees etc.

Has anyone placed an order recently? I placed my order on 2/18/2013(full detail below). The EDD is 3/1/13 but the order is still in production. I called Dell and they said there is "probably" a production delay but couldn't tell me for sure. They thought a part was on backorder but couldn't tell me which one....you get the point. I was just wondering if this is the start of a major production delay or an isolated issue with my order. I did notice Dell slid the estimated productions days on their website from 8 to 12 late last week.

    Here is what I ordered

    Alienware M17X black
    3rd gen core i7 3630qm
    8gb ddr3
    17.3 1920x1080 display
    2gb gddr5 geforce 660m
    128 msata ssd + 750gb 7200
    I customized my nameplate
    Blu ray disk drive
    Intel 2230 wireless

I placed my order on the exact same date as you (2/18/2013) and my EDD is 4/3/13 . My order also still says "in production". Hopefully, there isn't a back order that's causing delays. But from what I've read, it usually takes 2weeks average for an M17x to deliver anyways and dell's site takes forever to update

    I ordered:

    M17x black
    Core i7 3740qm
    12gb DDR3
    17.3 1920x1080 60hz display
    GTX 680m
    500gb 7200rpm + 64 msata caching drive
    blu ray drive
    intel 6250 wireless

Also note, I live in Canada.
