ok
which driver, where do i get it, how do i find the .inf lol
-
The driver for p170hm3 is fully supported by nvidia 270.51 beta... :/
it's written on nvidia site in the driver 270.51 -
The driver won't install... Need some help
the 485 is not showing up in the device list, and the driver will not complete installation. please help me with this. -
a few pages back you will see how to add the 485m to the inf file
-
"Hi
I will investigate but we engineer 3D to work with the exact HW the OEM has selected. I know its possible that you can add in a new GPU, but all of work to make it work with 460m likely doesnt work. " -
the standard 270.51 driver already enables 3d to work on the Clevo 3d?
-
how does it install if the 485m is not listed by default in the inf file ?
clevo must have made their own modification to this driver to ship with their machine, does anyone know where to get the actual clevo driver and try to install it on the R3 or have they done something in the clevo bias to make it work ???
this is all very confusing and sounds like a complete mess -
-
maybe someone on the clevo forum can help with this. i.e. where to download clvo specific drivers
found it
http://www.clevo.com.tw/en/e-services/download.asp
460m and 485m same driver -
got the card working, its awesome, but would you guys mind helping me with controlling fan speeds? im definitely getting the vroom
-
did you download the clevo driver ?
-
I'm using it to control the fans on my M15x, as I haven't got fan control with the 6970m. -
i have the clevo driver downloadad but can't really mess with it for a while. getting my m17x board and gpu replaced tomorrow morning. after that i'll stick the 485m back in. wanted also to see if the 1.03v modified bios improves oc'ing.
-
i mean how to configure the fans. dont know how to do that -
Few pages back I posted how to do it...

Use it at your own risk!

little upset, dell sends me a repair tech with alcohol on his breath and shaky hands. his hands are so shaky he asks me to remove certain cables and stuff. he replaces my gpu and the 8 beeps go away. i then tell him that he is also supposed to replace my system board, which he had with him. after taking the whole thing apart with very little care, he put in the new board (i inserted the cables) he turned the notebook on and viola, no display again, and this time 7 beeps.... getting my notebook demoed, shipped back to dell, and am to receive a new replacement unit in the next 5-7 days or so. i'm telling you I would have done a better job with dismantling the thing than this guy... -

sorry to hear the sad part, but congrats on the replacement. -
i had a pro buddy help me with this remotely, everything's millhouse now
win7 "get help from friend" is probably the best feature ever -
So dell sent me a new 460m because my other one crapped out, and I figured they would send me the retention bracket with it...I was wrong. What a pain in the it was to get that thing off. for you guys that have done it already do you take the pad off as well? or can you buy new padding? Im lucky i got it off in one piece.
I almost dont want to get the 485 now simply because I dont wanna F it up when removing the bracket from the 460m to the 485m. -
-
lol, would be nice. may be selling my m17x for the 18 soon. if i knew we could get 3d working with the 485m i would keep the m17x in a heartbeat.
-
Ok so I get my 485m today from ups. Now for some install questions.
1. Is there anything special I need to know to remove the 460 from my machine? Is it hard to do or relatively easy?
2. Anything special I need to know about putting the 485 in? Or is it the same process just reversed?
3. I have thermal paste, should I use that on the gpu?
4. When I bought the 485 it shows it comes with a fan. Should I use that fan or the alienware fan?
5. Should I download and mod the 270 driver before installing the 485?
6. Where is the inf file, that needs to be modded, located?
7. Once everything is installed and I download the fan mod, hwinfo, what should I put the sliders to? Any recommendations? And do I only need the hwinfo download or do I need something else?
Anything else I am forgetting?
Sorry for the newb questions but any help would be welcomed. -
new nvidia driver out today.
-
Sorry... but you ordered a $1000 card and ask such questions? My advice is prepare yourself thoroughly, this includes knowing all the necessary steps in advance. Most questions are aleady answered in this thread...
1. About exchanging the card, check out the service manual, it's pretty easy. Before opening your system make a power drain and I also highly recommend using some ESD-protection... especially since it such an expensive card.
Isopropyl alcohol will come in handy for cleaning the heatsink, also make sure you have thermal paste and maybe thermal pads around.
2. Check whether there's a retention bracket (or whatever this x-plate metal thingy on the back of the GPU is called) is already on the 485m, if not you need to take the one from your old card and put it on the 485m (hopefully it fits)
3. Yes, definitely, othewise it will overheat within minutes. Paste on the die, pads on the heatsink where the memory modules make contact.
4. Not necessary, Let the old one in the system and keep the other one.
5. Install the card, then the driver. Uninstall your driver before exchanging the card (it might work without, I'm not sure about the Nvidia drivers)
6. No idea.
7. For gaming more fan speed, for idling less, you have to find out yourself what's best for your system. Always watch the temps and never forget to adjust the fan speed before opening a 3d application or using something CPU intense. Also find the best respin period value... I guess it will be between 11k and 13k ms.
Anyway, take your time and be careful! -
Thanks for the help.
I know how things work on a desktop,as far as building it, but a laptop is foreign territory. I'm mostly concerned with the laptop specific stuff like the retention bracket. The other stuff, except the inf file mod, I was just double checking because I don't want to screw anythin up lol. Now I have to try it with the new nvidia driver today. Thanks again.
-
the retention bracket is the only challenging thing to handle, and isn't that big a deal. i took a small philips head screw driver and gently pushed the 4 brackets through the holes on the 485m first, do this slowly, taking time and swtitching between brackets so they all start to come out at the same time. the adhesive X under the 485 is what's holding the clip on, just delicatley remove it. even if the clip bends a little, its ok, can still be used just fine. after removing the 485 clip do the same for the 460m and swap them out. Keep the adhesive under the clip obviously. I used the 485m adhseive film with the 460m bracket.
anybody with the 485m try out the new driver yet? My notebook has to be shipped out to dell so i can get a replacement. -
alright well I got the dreaded 7 beeps
Heres what I did;
1. Remove the battery
2. Remove the bottom casing
3. Unhook fan and took it out
4. Unscrewed 2 screws that connect the 460 to the motherboard
5. Took the card out w/ heatsink still attached
6. unscrewed heatsink from card
7. Cleaned heatsink and 460
8. Redid the thermal paste and thermal pads on the 485
9. put the heatsink on the 485
10. put the 485 in the gpu slot and screwed it in
11. attached fan
12. put outer case and battery back on
Turn on the laptop and get 8 beeps.
Any suggestions? -
I was very disillusioned by at home service from dell. I'm plannning on applying with dell to do local service for the gulf coast area now. if this monkey can get a job with them, surely I can. He said he just had to pass a test. By the way, he arrived on scene with just one very large (screw-stripper) screwdriver and he broke the display cable fastener to the system board. -
I got 7 beeps after I did all those steps. I then put the 460 back in and got 7 beeps again. Dell is sending someone to repair it.
So what did I do wrong? Should I have installed and modded the inf file first? -
inf has nothing to do with it. let the dell tech do his job, hopefully a better job than mine did. he'll probably bring a new system board and gpu like mine. they do not bring new heatsinks or retention clips though.
-
Guess I'll let him use my thermal paste to lol.
I guess I'll be selling my 485m if I cant figure this out -
If Dell ever did come out with the 485M, is it believed that the cards you have purchased will work or is the card and its BIOS itself the problem? Just not quite sure what has been ruled out.
-
I really don't think it's the card. I took it right out of the box and installed it from there. Plus others have ordered from the same place with no problems. Even when I put my old card back in it didn't work which leads me to believe there is something wrong with either the motherboard or it was hummer error.(most likely that one)
-
system board possibly messed up.
-
Just stumbled on this page on Dell's site whilst hunting for some options on this - may mean nothing but could provide a ray of hope for future support?
Dell 485m search result -
-
Also did you use a grounded ESD-mat and a wristband? It's pretty easy to kill a mobo without this when you're unlucky.
-
anyone ever try the old 198 driver and the old 186 3d vision with this notebook?
-
If only dell would release support for this, then the r3 3d would fly off the shelves...
-
my r3 got shipped away to dell repair as of today. maybe will have it back come next friday.
-
yeap i try all driver and nothings work for 3D ;/
I'm back as i finish my exmas^^ -
Were u gonna do the 1.03v bios?
-
for peeps with the 485m installed, if you go to monitor properties and look at the details tab and select parent, does it say the 485m id or still sya the 460m like the line below
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_ 0DD1&SUBSYS_04901028&REV_A1\4&9ec5767&0&0008 -
neptune, do you still have your 485 installed? -
geoff, it wroten 0E31, so gtx485m detected.
i will do the 1.03v in some weeks :/ as I want to play with it firstly bcse if it come broken, i don,t have another laptop for reparing the gpu :/
there are the m18x drivers on dell site but without gtx485m ://// -
I think we have near enough concluded that there is something in the system bios that enables the 460m and 120hz 3D panel work together
-
I had the wrist band but no mat, I'll have to buy that. I do know that I didn't uninstall the driver before doing the gpu switch. Anyone think that could be the problem? I thought the current driver in the system worked with the 485.
Also, since the motherboard crashed, shouldn't the 485 gpu be fine? I figure since the 460 didn't work after I put it back in im think ling the motherboard was the only thing to break.
One last thing, if I try this again, when my motherboard is replaced, and I crashes my motherboard again, will Dell still replace my motherboard. -
i think changing the device id of the 485m is possible, when i flashed the 460m i don't know if the checksum was corrected. looking back that could easily have caused a bad flash. not saying i'm eager to attempt flashing my 460m again, but if someone with a 485m is willing to try flashing their 460 first change the device id and make sure the checksum is correct.
i think if you bork your 460m like me, just call dell and ask them to send you out a replacement 460m card since you are getting 8 beeps or whatever. They would ahve sent me the card to replace myself, but they wouldn't let me swap out the system board so they sent me a repair guy (who sucked).
I just don't think I can risk a bad 460m flash at the moment since I just got my card replaced. Would look way too suspicious with dell. But again, any brave souls willing to give it a shot, let me know. I'll try and help double check your work. -
