NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! My R2 looks identical and you DO NOT have to insert both (R3)I don't believe. I know you don't in the R2. It is built for several different types that may be thicker. Never heard of having to put it on top then insert. Better check that info.....

Oh yes. I was drunk while writing that post. :D

Btw, what other types of memory card that can be inserted in ?

I use SDHC and CF. CF certainly would not fit into that hole...

Ok! So I got home from a flight to Dallas, picked up a kid at school, got gas, hung out with the other kid that was sick, ate dinner, then got to finally open the box. :)

I first brought up the video of installing all four ram chips. It was of great help as I always hated pulling off the top. While I was in there I installed my SSD drive and relocated the 320mb that came with it to the other bay. I then used all the wonderful information on the forums to guide me through first setting the memory timings, overclocking the 2720 slightly and installing Win7 Ultimate correctly. Over on Guru3d they now have the patched 11.4 drivers, so I uninstalled the Dell drivers and put them in with no issues.

After all the windows updates, I installed Rift I was totally blown away by what I saw. I ended up maxxing every setting except full shadows and was still pulling 40+ fps. The biggest thing is when the fans kicked on, it was at the level of decibel as my 1730, which really was the last point of contention for me on this. I'm simply thrilled with everything about this computer, I'm not worried about keyboard flex or the rubberized coating as you see I bring an external mouse and keyboard with me on the road (I'm on the road every m-f), they are non-issues to me.

Thank you all for your guidance on this. This simply blows away the R2 in my eyes, in my small world. My windows Experience score: 7.5 7.8 7.6 7.6 7.7 :)

Death Adder, by far the best mouse I've ever used. And the fan noise? Minimal considering I'm running Rift totally maxxed (well not full shadows).

This makes me happy!!! :) Mine will be here Monday along with my bag (Orion) that I ordered Thursday using my $75 Dell coupon that I got for extending my warranty. Just a thought-if you ask, they will give it to you. I got an offer in the mail with a $75 coupon. Went the phone route and they said no. Called back and wanted to cancel and just use the mail offer, they gave me $75. Bag ended up costing $26!!!!!!!!!!! Happy. Only working half a day Monday. Don't want to miss delivery you know. FedEx will not leave it if you are not here to get it the first time. Waiting with anticipation............. :D

Can I hire you to photograph my wedding (6 years from now or so LOL)?

Anyone have a high-tech camera like Torai, and can share some pix of the stealth black R3? Requesting close-ups of the backside, underside, and a closeup of the hinge from all sides.

    Thx!

Got damn. I want a pool like that! Will definitely invite you guys to my house if I had a backyard like vviz's :) Thx for the photos!!! Can't believe you let yours sit on top of the concrete!!! Shame on you!

Anywhoo, I woke up today, and I thought to myself: "Is this thing ever gonna come?" It feels like I never even ordered, and almost feels like I'm still doing that speculating/asking WNSIB thing that I had been doing since March of 2010, which people kept asking me "Are you even gonna buy a lappy? When are you gonna buy it? Dude, just buy it already!"

So these photos are really keeping me sane, and (un)fortunately anxious :)

    LOL - frequently:

M11x-R2 - game up, or some news site...

M17x-R2 - GotoMeeting, working on diagrams, studying or documenting

M11x-R1 - My "work" machine, I take on gigs out of town and generally have my email up (I work remotely, so seeing it is key)

Yeah, I take it on faith the M11x's can get by on their own cooling

    Hello everyone,

Could any of you take a close up snap of the Media button while remain pressed. I am curious to know how exactly they work. I know it has to be pressed down. But it some sort of thin flexible spot on which u press or are they like flaps with are cut and you press down on it.

Will water or dust seep into these manual buttons or are they totally sealed. I have seen and used similar buttons on other devices. They are usually sealed and the free end is usually fused with some sort of rubber flap. So its flexible the free end of the plate..But over time this rubber flap that gives flexibility breaks...

I know there is also the lightening effect that is visible through these white gaps..

I think by my description you all would understand what I am try to observe and infer.

I hope someone does a close macro shot clearly showing the key being pressed down ..

    Thank You.

I think the button might be like the buttons on my cell phone: http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/images/features/n78preview/n78h.jpg

The soft keys, send, end, menu, and clear buttons are pressed in, and it's just one piece that is "flexible" like you suggested. I was kinda hoping that the R3's was made of aluminum or something, kinda like a microwave or the buttons on some fridges.

    Torai, I'm just wondering how you like your m17x R3 system because that is the exact same system that I want. M17x R3 - ST Nebula Red | Intel i7 2720QM | ATI Radeon HD 6970 | 8GB DDR3 1600 | 120GB Intel 510 SSD + 750GB 7200 | Slot-load Floppy Blu-ray Hybrid | 17.3" WLED 1920x1080 |. And also did you add an SSD later or add the HDD later. Thanks.

I am currently having a project, when I have time I will try to make some shots. However, as I mentioned before, the new media control buttons look good but they suck ! Pushing those buttons is a pain in the ***. It makes me think of my 18 years old TV's buttons at home. You have to push VERY hard for those buttons to work.

For my personal use, I loved my R3 and it was a greater choice over the "brick" R2. Single GPU is less pain than dual ones, and you gain mobility + battery life. You cant go wrong with AW, I just love those colorful things in the darkness. Every night before going to sleep, I play a bit with AlienFX, LOL. It makes me sleep better :D

And, always add SSD (even HDD) later because you will have more choices with better prices. With $100 upgrade from 320 GB to 640GB HDD, you can buy a Seagate Momentus 750GB or a Seagate 500GB XT hybrid and sell the stock 320GB HDD for about $30-40.

In your, and other's, opinions...what's more "premium"? Touch-sensitive, or the pressable media buttons? I like touch-sensitive more. It's more high-tech :)

I prefer the R3 physical buttons over the capacitive R2. Same reasons that Torai mentioned, the slightest touch sets off the R2 buttons when cleaning.

I, too, prefer the physical RAZR-type buttons of the R3. I briefly owned the Sandy Bridge-based Toshiba Qosmio (for couple of days that took me to realize that the dead pixel is something I cannot live with) and I vividly remember being increasingly irritated by the capacity volume and media buttons it had immediately to the left of the keyboard.

100 percent agree. I had the touch buttons on my POS HP and I don't know how many times I launched "QuckPlay" which wasn't quick at all. Took like 30 sec for it to finally come up before I could close out of it and continue what I was doing.

As for the Orion backpack-not too impressed. It is easy to carry, the laptop compartment holds it very snuggly. I do like the way it opens 180 degrees to put your lappy in too. There is about 3/4 inch padding on the bottom but you could cut something to go in it if needed-there's room for that. There really isn't a lot of storage room for USB drives and the mouse pouch is barley big enough for a mini travel mouse. Don't get me wrong, I like the bag, but I had this ONE and consider it just as good-if not better. More storage and like someone said-Not advertising you have an Alienware computer.

    OOPS! Wrong thread. Sorry.

Hey guys just wanna share my new AW babies which I got from ElSerch in NBR

This is what he shared us on page 7 this thread

After that I pm'ed him to see if he could do one for me, and he eagerly did it for me, for free. I gave him the dimensions of the hard drive so he can customize the decal. Pretty professional, isnt it? :D

I just received the package and here's kinda the "unboxing" time:

    Opening:

    Inside:

    After 3 mins installation:

There are two different color options: dark gray or silver. Both with blue Alienware head. The interesting thing is, under direct light, both look very similar to each other. In the last image above you may even think the alien head of the silver one is silver, however, it is not. It is blue. Looking these things under different angle views gives different colors, LOL. I had a lot of fun :D

Just want to say thanks to ElSerch for his time. All credits to him. Even he did it for free, I will have his money come back :p

Not yet but I hope there will be some later this week.
Seems like all orders after 3/4 are in another batch... Its has been almost 10 days and few people got their laps during this time...
Guys if you get your lap dont forget to spend couple of mins taking some pics and let us know :) pictures = better than announcement in order status thread, lol :p
