One starts command center where you can control multiple things, the F11 key starts the LED controls.

There are multiple sections within command center.

BTW thank you all for a truly great thread. I don't have "my" M17/18x yet but will soon. However, I really love the pics, the discussions, even the preferences on various features. Love seeing there are more pages to read on this thread each time I come here.

Why does it look like in this picture, the keyboard is curved? Or is it your camera doing that?

That's "perspective". it's how we naturally perceive visual information.
They keyboard is flat (and square....well, rectangular), but the camera was not placed in the exact middle of the laptop - nor was it 100% perpendicular to the surface of the laptop. This means that, although by a small amount, the front and middle of the keyboard are slightly closer to the lens than the extremities of the laptop, skewing the visual information.

You just don't notice it without conscious effort when you experience the effect in person. A skilled technical drawer/draftsperson/artist (I'm an Architect for example) will subtly incorporate perspective into renderings in order to emulate a 3D feel to an image constructed on a 2D medium (like paper, screens, or a photograph in this case) while lessening the visual discomfort associated with visually accurate - but awkward - depth perception.

Horizontal lines with 2 nearly equidistant vanishing points combined with a non-perpendicular view is a good example of visually accurate information that does not seem natural - but is (to human eyes).

download it and throw it into paint or something. You will see that it is indeed curved in that image - but NOT in reality.

    http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y24/taruku/dscf4719h-1.jpg
Note the bottom of keyboard is much less distorted - it's closer to the camera!
Wow, I can't believe I am taking this so srsly lol

edit: kinda drew that rectangle misleadingly. Should have aligned all edges with what should be straight@top, but didn't.
Closest to true width is bottom

Can you share how to do it? I'm already worried about the stuff peeling off, or dirt/oil on it causing scratches and peeling.

It's not paint, its a vinyl material but I'm not sure how the soft touch would hold up to the adhesive, not sure if taking off would result in damaging the original paint.

Test a small piece of it in the corner of the lid near the hinge or something. Also, my scratch on the lid, it's barely noticeable now, after slight wiping. It's still there, but I think the pictures magnify it LOLZ. Still pretty disappointed about the scratch being there though. Imma call on Monday to see wassup.

Nah! Width is about the same.

    R2

    Height
    Front 51.31 mm (2.02 inches)
    Back 53.59 mm (2.11 inches)
    Width 405.89 mm (15.98 inches)
    Depth 321.31 mm (12.65 inches)

    R3

    Height
    Front 44.5 mm (1.75 inches)
    Back 45.0 mm (1.77 inches)
    Width 410.0 mm (16.14 inches)
    Depth 304.0 mm (11.97 inches)

    OK. Like .16 inches wider.

had it on for like 5 day. i put it in my office around 70 degrees f . i used a 3m medium tack vinyl. vinyl came off clean with no residue and didn't take any of the soft touch off. so its a good test run gonna test it out with some new materials sometime this week.

you sound like you worked with these material before.

Not exactly. I'm kind of a Jack of all trades; master of few and NOT a master at most. I try to excel in everything I get my hands on. I do pretty well at anything I'm doing, it's just I try to get involved in way to many things all the time and I don't have enough time to stay focused on everything I get myself into. LOL

I have a Jeep and like to take offroad and build up, and a v-rod muscle that I like to rip around on. Hard to find time to do any of that though with everything else I try to keep up on. Not to mention, I live in NY (upstate) so can't do any of that in the winter. So summers are even busier.

I got a very professional wooden desk too, but the room is too small.

Btw, could you resize the pictures to maximum 500x500 so it can be displayed ? You can upload them on imageshack or flickr, then choose the appropriate size.

I am using this AlienFx theme, looks pretty nice:
