can you replace a ccfl screen with any ccfl? Say I bought a 17" WSXGA panel off ebay or wherever, could I swap it with my current panel?
TIA
-
-
Yes its possible if they have both the same number of CCFL. Usually 2 CCFL are thicker and require 2 CCFL inverter. On my gateway I switched out a terrible looking 1920x1200 AUO with a better but still horrible looking LG 1680x1050. Both are single lamp. I tried 2 CCFL but could not find an inverter that was compatible with the notebook.

the answer is maybe. most inverters use different style plugs on them for the input cable. as well as the brackets to mount them have to mount up properly. and as above you would have to use a dual bulb screen *most likely*
if i am correct without have seen the alienware inverter ill bet it uses the standard dell style inverter plug which is for sure very common. some screens have upper and lower brackets as well that may or may not need to be carefully removed though that part is pretty easy to do.
i have personally been able to swap out a dual ccfl for a single one in the past on some notebooks at the request believe it or not of the customer they said the dual was to bright for their eyes (lol) but it depends on the cable thet is originally used what i mean is if it has a single inverter with dual outputs or dual inverters which usually means just leave one inverter unplugged with the new screen.
now another issue seen a lot with dell in particular is if the wrong model inverter is used the brightness up and down controls may be backwards so when you go to turn up the brightness you are now turning it down and visa versa. ive personally only seen this in dells and a couple hp's ive done and its most common on the 17" screens for some reason.
but in essence most of the time yes you can use any screen but you may have to re-use the inverter you got with the alienware screen (which is fine to do) and you would have to be sure of what type of setup the dual ccfl is if it really is (which i still have doubts that is is ill know soon though) -
THANKS, z!
Can you get screens at a good price? Do you even sell them?
shoot me a pm... -
yes i can get them or direct you some where. what i need officially to know is the model actual used in the m17x though officially. samsung has no info at all on the model (yet) that mandrake posted so i have no actual specs yet. for me to match one up for you i need more info on these panels.. im working on it trust me

Thanks again, z!
Does the pic below help at all? I know it is generic, but how many MATTE 17" WXGA+, dual CCFL panels could Samsung make?Attached Files:

well sleey0, your looking to replace the current one you have with the anti glare?
i would be highly interested in how this looks under the full glass cover for the lid... -
-
The one I have is anti-glare/matte. The WUXGA is a Trulife (glare type) panel. I don't think it makes a difference because the E2E panel covering adds glare anyway.
I want a WSXGA panel - I find that to be a good comprimise between high-res and readability -
You can set the DPI in windows, and you could have firefox/chrome/explorer do an automatic rescaling for fonts, no? -
Yeah... I don't like using the increased DPI because it makes graphics on webpages and such all blocky/pixelated.
Besides, you'll get better performance with a slightly lower res and you won't notice the difference anyway (at least I can't).
That's the thing with LCD's - you have to run them at native res or else they look like garbage.
I kinda miss the good old days of CRT's -
I was planning on getting a native of 1920 x 1200 (which would be put in use for games) and keeping the desktop at a default of 1440 x 900.
That wouldnt work? -
It'll work, but running at a non-native res will look quite terrible.
Aspect ratio has nothing to do with it - it's the fixed pixels in the display (similar to how an HDTV looks like garbage when your watching SDTV content on it). -
Fantastic...not only do I have to decide between black & silver....I have to decide on between the different resolutions xD
-
The WXGA is actually very nice on this system. I haven't seen the WUXGA but I know a few ppl were commenting on them being dim and having light bleed problems.
-
-
Well I have the 1920 x 1200 and I think my screen is beautiful. But I'm not picky either.
-
How you liking your system so far, oj??

Making my keyboard look like a christmas tree. -

Can you post that pic of the white M17x with the ATI card again? The one with the specs.

Thanks, yea it doesn't give any indication of how many CCFL's it is using.

-
i sent that model to the guy at samsung to confirm it. he said he will call some people higher up on monday to see what info he can find out about it.
-
So Z you planning on taking a look at your buddies screen Saturday?
-
-
Did he ever get any info about the 1920x1200 model?
-
-
I can't believe Samsung does not know what LCD's it is making .....
I think after everything is said and done we will see it is not Exactly what is advertised but it will be a dual bulb( how ever crappy it may be) -
I think Chaz said they were both matte, no?
I'd personally prefer the Trulife since it has more vibrant colors & higher brightness...seeing how the E2E is gonna be glare-y anyway -
I am going by the detailed spec pdf. The WUXGA is listed as a Trulife panel which is a glare-type.
The WXGA+ panel isn't listed as a Trulife which means anti-glare (in both the pdf and on my detailed parts list). -
I totally agree with you though, I wish there was a WSXGA option. Deciding between the two extremes is quite difficult xD -
Does the 1440x900 WXGA screen have more or less bleed then the WUXGA

I think we can all agree there should have been an LED screen on this monster. That was a big deception.
-
Z, you should persuade your friend to come visit you by informing him that he would be a hero to thousands of people if he gave you a visit (bringing his M17x of course).
