Easy? the glass used for LCD isn't the same as your window :p .

Good glass can be harder than hardened steel in mohs... It's MUCH better.

It unfortunately does not read brightness.
I have the Spyder 2 Express - it comes with the device and software. That's all you need.

lol.. well my wife knows nothing but to turn it on and move the mouse..

She noticed the inconsistencies on the lighting and the excessive bleed.. so if she noticed it, i can only say that proves how bad it is...

Dont get me wrong. the resolution is beautiful.. I love the detail in it..

I just hate the bleed and the horrible inconsistencies of the back lighting..If that gets resolved its a beautiful lcd..

i just got my hands on my m17x and i have to say the screen is actually very good quality. I have a very small bit (maybe half a centimeter?) of light bleed on the bottom of the screen and the rest os flawless (from reasonable viewing angles).

i have owned many high end laptops and this definitely is one of the best screens i have had.

i will post pictures on a black screen when i get a chance...im in the process of moving overthe next 3 days so you may have to wait.

yea honestly i am really loving this thing. BEAUTIFUL display in general. definitely some minor tweaks to do from the windows/nvidia controller side but from a hardware perspective its great.

also i have no issues with any of my media buttons.

the scroll bars dont work as nicely as id like but i will be moused 90% of the time so no big deal.

I thought about this whole glare problems with the m17x and thought to myself, "if only there was some sort of anti-glare spray" for monitors. Did a quick google search and found this...

    http://www.glarebusters.com/

Not sure if this product works or if there are any similar products out there, but I thought I'd share.

A screenshot cant show the bleed and brightness of the screen would have to use a camera and on camera's the screens look better

Lol whilst a good idea i dont think(or hope rather) anyone would spray that stuff on the machine lol. Im sure theres something in fine print that says "while this product works as advertised it will make your screen smell like old socks, you have been warned" :D.

Did you watch the commercial on the site? There's glare on someones TV from sunlight coming through a window and all they had to do was simply close the blinds or curtains.

it is putting out about 300-320 nits

Which is pretty bright. The issues with a dim screen are because the screen will automatically dims when some thing dark is on the screen. Its like a automatic adjuster.

Hope that helps, if you have more questions just PM me

So far it looks like a Software issue because it adjust to whats on the screen not the lighting around you.

Once the process is found hopefully you can kill it and it will run @ full bright ess or what ever brightness you set it at

I asked before if this would be interchangeable with an LED screen, and the answer was basically no, unless you go through major changes.

But what about an LED backlit LCD? would that be possible? or its the same thing

Its the same thing. CCFL and LED are just the methods of lighting up the LCD. LED's are brighter than single CCFL and similar to 2 CCFL depending on the model of LCD. Althought LED's would make the LCD thinner due to CCFL's nature of being a lamp and LED's require less power.

Not sure who told you an LED backlit screen wouldn't work.

I remember a while back some said the resolutions weren't compatable with a 16:10 ratio but that's not true.

Led backlit screens are available from many manufacturers in a 16:10 ratio like from LCD's 4 Less.

I may be doing an istall in a couple months to check the feasability. I've read the LED screens don't use an inverter so the main considerations will be H x W x D and the power requirements and connectors.

The resolutions and aspect ratio's however, are not a limiting factor.

EDIT: ScreenTek even gives the height and width on their screens.

Well after a few attempts it appears the they finally got my replacement order processed. I got the confirmation.. Unfortunately I get an dell automated call that the part is on back order... Seriously now.. how long is this gonna take.. Its only taken about a week to get added to the system and a replacement service call set up.. It probably would have been faster to send the system back and get a whole new one...

*crosses fingers* that they will get this taken care of quickly..

Although the alienware ppl have been really nice, I have yet to get one call back from them.. I have always had to call in and track down the reps..

Some bleeding i can deal with. But this one has excessive bleeding.. As I have stated before, I can see it in games and in movies and once I configure it with the screen color test to try to get it as optimized as I can, you can see uneven lighting on the whole screen.

Not only do I have the bleed, but on the left hand side bottom ( where the start menu appears when opened) just above the bleed is a dark spot on the monitor. By far the darkest point on the whole screen. You can put any color background up and you will see an oblong darker area right there up 2 thirds of the screen.... This is why in wow, all my chat windows appear very washed out, but if I move them, not as bad on other locations of the screen..

So, I think I am just unlucky and got a bad screen....

Every lcd that I have ever owned, has displayed some bleed on black/dark backgrounds.. I have never seen one where it is noticeable during regular use.. That is why this specific screen is unacceptable..

If anyone paid the amount of money for this system and received a screen in the shape that I did, most likely would get it replaced... There is no way I am accepting this particular one..

Once this issue gets resolved. the rest of the notebook is in great shape and I will be satisfied with my purchase..

It just seems like it has been such work trying to get this replacement set up when it should have been an easy one.. lol

    thats all...

sorry to tell you but it will not work led screens require different way of powering it up and different wiring also many of them contain the actual led's in the lid itself not the panel.. you can not simply swap a led screen out for a ccfl one
