sounds good good to hear your sticking with the system

Well i got the confirmation email with case number that has the exchange for the notebook.. So all appears good.. We will see.
*crosses fingers* -
gl, i might take the plunge monday and order.
-
this thread scares me, and is basically the only thing keeping me from getting an m17x. I hope everything works out in the end for you, kilthro!
-
Well after not getting an order number during this week... I contacted the Case Manager that was handling my replacement. That case manager sent the info over to AW to review.
I got a call back about 30 min ago with an order number.
When I look that up, the order date is today.. So I guess they goofed again, and didnt officially place the order until today.. Probably due to that internal replacement approval.. Anyways, I have it tracked on dell's site now.. So prolly in a few weeks it will ship.. *crosses fingers* for better screen. -
-
Clauss should try my lights trick.
-
-
The Tech is coming in the UK to change my display, palm rest, touch pad and media bay, all messed up
-
NO WAY are they going to replace all that on my brand new system. If it were a few months old then yeah it'd be ok. -
Yeah dont let them Frankenstein your brand new machine , demand a new one as Sleey0 said.
-
-
It's up to you, ultimately. Are you comfortable with this? I mean, a brand new system shouldn't need to be ripped apart.
I know if it were me I'd take advantage of Dell's policy of replacement systems. There is a limited window of getting a replacement. You don't send the current system back until the new one arrives. -
-
Dell doesn't charge you or anything (unless you don't send the broken system back when you get the new one).
I just don't think a new system should be cobbled together, that's all.
Again, if you don't care then don't worry about it. -
Probably because he'd have to wait another month to get it.
-
-
-
Get used to taking apart the system. It'll help you understand more on how it's all built and troubleshoot better in the future. You'd also probably know where that humming noise is coming from. Since it's new I would understand you wanting to wait a bit before you do it.
-
The lcd replacement was a pain.. Just take your time and no issue... I agree with Sleey0.. With this being a new system, you should get a new one.. If it was a year old or something yea, take it apart and replace the bad piece...
This was my determining fact on demanding the replacement system from dell...
I just hope my new one is in better shape... This way i can be 100% happy .. lol -
-
This notebook offers everything that I am looking for in one...
The only big issue that I have is the LCD.. So If i can get that taken care of I will be ok...
I really want this to work out and I am willing to give AW/Dell fair opportunities... If it doesnt in the end atleast I know I gave it my best shot.. -
-
It was a pain for him because it required the deepest surgery possible for an M17x...lol -
anyone have any comments about the colour saturation? i think it's too high. especially reds. dunno if that's how all the LCDs are or just mine (ie. replacement required).
-
I had to transplant everything from the original lid to the new one since all they sent me was the lcd with E2E that you see on the inside of the notebook.
The transplant included, mounting brackets, inverter, adapters, webcam, back portion, bottom inside alienware mechanics and light, and alien head.... So it was more involved to swap that out than originally anticipated... That is why i said it was a pain.. If they would have sent me a complete lid and I could swap one for the other it wouldnt have been as bad... -
-
I always turn up digital vibrance on Samsung panels, so I am not sure why your reds are overblown.
-
-
-
ewwwwwwww digital vibrance is nasty imo. i dont use it at all
-
Anyway, I was just going to ask you zfactor if you still haven't had a chance to play with the M17x LCD??? -

+1 Million for DV , its why i have loved Nvidia all these years, i love Overblown colors myself

Ok got this info from the german website notebookcheck on their review of the M17x with the 1200p panel. Since it was in german I used babelfish so the translation isn't perfect. They described the lcd, some bad some good. Heres the snipit about the LCD:
"Our first brightness test of the notebook brought a maximum brightness of 263 cd/m ² in the lower central measuring quadrant to day. However we could observe both with free eye and confirmed by our measurements clear brightness waste within the range of the upper corners. Here the maximum brightness on up to 159.5 drops cd/m ². Accordingly low is therefore also the value of the brightness distribution: Only 60,6% create the WUXGA panel in this discipline. Top cuts the display off of our test candidate however with the maximally possible contrast. With a particularly low Schwarzwert of 0.24 cd/m ² the panel achieves a maximum contrast relationship of believe it or not 1058:1 - respect! Also subjectively the represented colors work very strongly and brilliantly. Point of view stability can be sufficiently described both in the horizontal and in the vertical range of vision and. With possible reflections and reflections, also in interiors one must make friends oneself however on a long-term basis."
So if I am understanding correctly it seems the bottom portion of the screen is the brightest and it gets dimmer towards the upper part of the lcd? The 263 nits definitely describes a dual lamp but then the brightness dips all the way to 160 nits near the upper corners apparently. I hope zfactor can interpret this information a little better. It seems the contrast ratio is superb however at a 1058:1 ratio along with good color gamut. The dimness in the corners bother me though.
Also added this information to the OP. -
the top bulb is just crap
Not hard to figure out -
I'd rather it be a defect than standard practice as to warrant recalls or something.. cause otherwise it seems unprofessional and distasteful to allow such sub-par lcds in an otherwise high end notebook.
-
well either they can ship them or not... i just want to have mine
-
Interesting how notebookjournal say that M17x have the best screen of gaming notebooks (and they already reviewed M980NU).
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
In either circumstance it is possible they recieved a less than great review model... often as they are pre-release there are problems (seems in the M17X screen review it was possible the top bulb was weak)
-
pretty much correct, top bulb is useless on this panel, and just from seeing the panel with my own eyes i have to say i knew i was right i said previously i knew it didnt even make the 300nit mark, i have had a chance to see a wuxga today (didnt have my clibration stuff with me) and i can for 100% this panel is well under the 400nit rating... NO WAY imo it is 400nit. and yes the wuxga for sure had some grain and shimmer to it, not terrible but it looked like a normal samsung to me..
-
grainy eh? Is it really noticeable from normal sitting distance?
-
Ah didn't notice notebookjournal's review.. I'll post the translation for their review of the LCD too.
"In our test configuration a non coated for antireflection WUXGA display (type Samsung SEC5443) with a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. The panel achieves a very good average brightness of 222 in our test cd/m ². Really phenomenal are however the contrasts of the display. With a relationship of 1268:1 with maximum brightness Alienwares M17x sets up a new optimum in the editorship. Colors work brilliantly and intensively. Also point of view stability is without blames. Vertically there are first picture falsifications starting from a deviation from for instance 35°. The points of view remain horizontal still more stably. Only starting from a very strong deviation beyond the 50° the picture darkens. Despite the excellent values becomes difficult work in the free one or with direct beam of light. As is the case for the MacBooks of Apple and that have edge-to-edge glass the Glossy display protects 18" Clevo M980NU. Whereby reflections themselves with for example over 300 cd/m ² not to be faded out can. All in all the Alienware M17x offers up-to-date the best display under the Gamer notebooks." -
I stumbled upon an old post back when I was trying to get some info on the p7811fx lcd, you can see how fanboism can effect people negatively. What a bunch of a$$holes. One of them has even been banned
. Sorry off topic lol..
-
Really can't wait until they bring in some LED LCD screens. Not sure why they did not in the first place...
-
yes just copy the macbook screens
-
The only thing is when they do offer this as an option are current owners going to be able to upgrade? Not so sure...
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
THEY WILL NOT OFFER LED LCD's for the last time lol... I'm sorry but we have covered this multiple times... a laptop that is set up for CFL screens will not be able to support an LED screen without MAJOR modifications.... the setup is different
-
Its always possible they could Add it down the line but totally unlikely at this point.
The mods needed would be a new inverter and panel to hold/support the LED but other then that it could be done easily if Dell wanted to do it .
The M6400 supports all of them(LCD/LED) so again possible just not realistic unless it was announced at launch.
