Yea but the problem is they won't becuase they get these giant batch discounts from Samsung on these screens becuase LED LCD's are so big right now... it makes it cheaper so they can put out the system at a more competitive price

True, but considering I'm going to spend about 5k on this computer [in the next few days], it would've been nice to have LED LCD as an option from Alienware.

Yeah as long as they have the option then the pricing can remain competitive while still having the choice for people who dont care about $$$.

Now I will just try to show you the whole picture in case you haven't seen it yet.

What you're observing here isn't exactly new and is usually referred as Sammy (a.k.a. Samsung) who is a major display supplier and obviously could afford to make less than perfect displays while still being in about every notebook.

The issues with the uneven illumination aren't a result of the used type of backlighting but rather a poor design. And since I don't want to make a historical tour of Samsung "achievements" in this specific field, let's just focus on their latest "innovations".

As you may notice all of them have rather mediocre illumination, and of course all of them generated enough complains of uneven backlighting and/or deep bleeding on the forums. Also, it's worth mentioning that the 15.4" Dell Precision M4400 has an optional Samsung WUXGA dual-lamp display which suffers from the same issues.

Otherwise, the 17" WUXGA and WXGA+ dual-lamp displays have been around for some time now, Asus have used similar in the the G2 and G70, but they are AUO and have better illumination and brightness than new Samsung ones.

Anyway, I want to say that while every LCD manufacturer produces certain amount of displays that have similar issues, the problem with Samsung is that they have been consistently excelling in this specific area, which is way they have developed a not-so-nice but well-deserved "reputation". And of course, those issues, while not a big deal for everyone, aren't acceptable in high-end and more importantly expensive notebooks, but unfortunately are often seen exactly there (it reminds me of Sammy-inspired phenomenon observed on the previous generation of HP high-end workstation models - 8710w)

That's about it, and I usually avoid making generalizations about manufacturers but sometimes it's just unavoidable.

It's understandable considering that the displays on the Clevo M980NU (Samsung) and the Asus W90 (CMO) which they reviewed have lower brightness and contrast ratio.

    Nice Summary Dreamer..

I guess that is the biggest complaint that I have.. Not to rehash anything, is that for the price you pay for the m17x you would expect to get a good screen. I mean come on, you have to stare at it when using the notebook so if it is sub par the experience is going to blow... The only alternative is to use an external display which in some cases is good but geez I didn't buy a notebook to expect to be forced to use an external display....

Of all things, the LCD should be perfect....

Dell should really push back on Samsung to provide better lcds..

Oh well, I am hoping my replacement has a better one from the batch...

The rest of the notebook i am satisfied with and has been rock solid, well except the touch buttons and touch pad but not a deal breaker to me...

Do you mean with mechanical aspects?

I like the 1900 due to the resolution it can provide.. 1400 would make everything too big for my liking..

They both seem to have good screens and then bad ones with bleed and lighting..

Aspects like bleeding, lighting consistency, color balance.

I'm ready to sacrifice resolution for quality.

So it's a coin toss for both resolutions? Never know what you get?

have to give some credit where its due.. i got the sammy desktop screens i ordered from dell in today 23" ones and they are STUNNING. they have a tiny bit of bleed but they are just a great screen so much so the 23" lg i had on my desk is going to the office and one of these is coming home.. now their notebook screens is another story.. but this thing is just awesome for this price. for a tn panel i am very suprised ill say that.

zfactor, I have two desktop LCDs from them (samsung) and they are stunning..

I love them to death.. Very little bleed at all. Vivid colors and crisp. Very even lighting...

I was shocked to see that the one in the M17x was a samsung.. I had high expectations for them and when it was confirmed, i was so disappointed.

I even have their TVs and have always enjoyed them and get compliments all the time from guests how great it looks. I have even had people go buy one after they have seen mine.. So yea, it seems it is night and day difference from the notebook screen.

I guess they should change the "all powerful" moniker to "almost all powerful" as the LCD AW/DELL decided to use really ruins the M17x.

Yeah..so far it's been a minority of people complaining/got bad screens. I'm withholding any opinion until we see what some of the second gen owners with possible new LCD's have to say.

Yes, some people don't mind washed-out colors and non-uniform back-lighting, but 67 pages and counting on a "M17x LCD" thread suggests otherwise. I am just bummed that at best it's a mediocre to poor LCD. AW should have done much better when choosing the LCD--I doubt anyone would disagree. AW's marketing/hype doesn't hold up as usual.

That's a worthless argument. How many of the posts in those 67 pages are actually from owners with a bad screen and how many are from people trying to figure out if it's actually a dual-bulb screen or not. For that matter how many are just people whinning OMGZ M17X SUX NOW!!

All right then bring out the full blown testing and real analysis. I am not interested in bashing anything or anyone nor do I represent some nefarious force. Potential buyers want the full story. If the quality of this LCD wasn't an issue do you really think this thread would continue to build? I would argue that people don't whine when things work right, they may even present accolades, however when something that is expensive doesn't perform right you''ll definitely get an ear or text full.

I ordered my m17x last weekend, so I am not trying to bash at all. Just wanted to point out that I was in microcenter today, and I can attest to the fact that the screen on the m17x is horrible. I saw it next to other laptops that had better screens. There was a lot of light bleed especially out of the bottom. It is a little disappointing, but hey it is what it is. I still love the machine and have no regrets. Just wanted to give some info on what i saw. It was very obvious that it was a cheap panel...

My screen is absolutely fantastic... and I have so little bleed! it's great... really the reason you may have had a problem while at Microcenter is becuase of the Auto dimming feature (can make the laptop screen look pretty bad at times) , but that should be resolved soon
