Bleed looks about the same as the m9750 I have, which I always thought was a nice screen.

Yup Chaz I would say so.... Always does when your taking raw and I had to leave the shutter open for longer (lighting) but overall it's pretty close, I love my screen unoticable besides complete black, even when playing GtaIV and going into a dark building at night didn't cause any problems... And not a single dead pixel! Thanks for the link Z

Just read this whole thread and am saddened to see the panel quality that is showing up. I am planning on buying this system with WUXGA in the very near future - here is to crossing fingers and hoping for the best!
-
dude ive heard ppl say it was just fine. listen to moo.
-
Yea my panel is literally as perfect as your going to get from these screens and im pretty darn picky .
-

I believe you. Just need someone to buy my whitebook then i am good to go....
I also am not that picky about panels....been running desktop on two Gateway FHD2400s which everyone seems to think suck but I have loved -

Hey Scook, go back a page and look at the photos I posted... I'll take some pics of it running something if you want to see just how beatiful it actually is!
(minimal bleed) -
For those of you who have owned an M17 or an m9750, how does the Glare/reflection on the M17X compare in a relatively well lit room? (not day light, but office/home light environment). Is it better, worse, or about the same as the older laptops mentioned above?

The microcenter right by my house got these in stock, I am going by tomorrow after work and will keep you al posted. They will have the 1200p screen by the way.

Ok got mine in.. yeah whoever said the screen was terrible is right. If anyone has seen the p7811fx back a year ago knows what I mean, if the bestbuys you went to had the terrible AUO screens. Well this is almost exactly like it. Has the graininess issues, has okay brightness shaped halo in middle upper part of the screen then lower part where light bleed is, is bright. Then the rest of the screen is either dark and/or has a yellowish tint. I have it on max brightness on a white background. Darker backgrounds look fine just like the AUO. My crappy LG single CCFL looks better and I hate that lcd because its so dim and colors are not vibrant.

is yours a SEC5443 or whatever..
-
they all say the same thing SEC5443 problem is thats not truly the number as that screen has been reported on other machines including ones with LEDs in them so no one is certain what the actual make is of it .
Nvidia reports as a Seiko i believe.
-
Do you think our screens are by the same manufacturer?
-
bbbwwaaahhh? -

-
Well...I give up trying to figure it out anymore. Some users posting pics clearly showing good screens, some users posting pics clearly showing subpar screens. It's literally been 50/50 with people, only thing I could imagine is Samsung is throwing in cheaper, single bulb screens along with the good screens to meet ship deadlines or cut down on cost.
-
For as long as i can rememeber when it came to dell and screens it was always random what screen you got . They actually call it the screen lottery.
All my XPS's were that way with different people getting different screens XPS gen 1 gen 2 1710 . The 1730s were the same way . If you do some digging you will see this is nothing new at all. -
For now, there is only one supplier of screens for the M17x - Samsung.
In the past all of Dell's XPS systems had as many as 5 different suppliers (Sammy, LG, Tosh, Chi-Mei, and Sharp).
I am not sure why there is only 1 right now but I guess Dell has it's reasons. lol
As far as screen quality and variance - like quad said: it is basically a lottery. When Samsung (or any other LCD maker) makes these screens, they are made in very large sheets and then are cut.
From there, they are graded and the largest screens get the highest grade and by the time they get to small screens (say cell phone size, for example) those screens are usually the lowest quality.
So, as you can imagine, quality will be different from batch to batch/sheet to sheet....
I had a really awesome article on LCD manifacturing but I can't find it. If anyone comes across an article describing panel grading and cutting, please post it here. -
Hello everybody,
I've been following this thread for a few days now, and I'd like to ask a couple of doubts that have been around my head.
Lucky you guys that can discuss if the 1920x1200 LCD has some bleed or is bright enought... really!!
I live in Spain, and I'm planning to buy in a M17x. I've been studying the different options and I was sure to get the 1920x1200 LCD, but since the last week this option has disappeared from Dell Spain (and seems for the rest of Europe as well)!!so no luck for us: they've run out of screens or something (I didn't get an answer from Dell to this question) so I'll have to go for the 1440x900 instead.
I'm quite disappointed with this, so I've been doing a little research and I've found this LCD:
http://www.blisscomputers.net/samsung-ltn170ct01-laptop-lcd-screen-17-wuxga-glossy.aspx
It seems to acomplish the specs of the LCD mounted on your M17x ('though it isn't the LTN170CT11) Do you think it can fit the M17x? In this case, I would order the laptop and the screen and replace it... or do you think it's better to leave it as it is in 1440x900?
Thanks for your help and sorry for the long post -
It can be ordered by phone, some people did it and recieved their order with the 1920x1200 screen. If not just wait, it will reappear.
-
I'd never replace a screen on a new laptop. It's tantamount to replacing an engine in a new car: For one, replacing the screen on a laptop is very difficult. And second, they're expensive! So I'd avoid attempting doing something like that unless the one you have is broken. They're just not easily upgradable components.
If I were you I'd wait for the screen I wanted, or buy a different laptop. -
The WXGA screen is actually very nice.
If your thinking about getting a base model M17x w/ a single 260, then you should def choose the WXGA.
I had the lower res screen and it was bright with good colors and minimal bleed. It had Samsung's trademark grain/shimmer/sparkle/whatever you want to call it, but this has never bothered me and is barely noticeable. -
-
The grain bothers the hell out of me.. not only that but the uneven back lighting.. its like looking at a rear projection tv instead of looking at a plasma tv.
-
The rest of the notebook is perfect, the screen is terrible and I will be replacing it with something better asap. If anyone wants to buy my 1200p screen pm me lol.
-
Thanks for your fast answers.
I think I'll ask by phone if it's still posible to get the big one and the name plate engraving (wich also disappeared) or I'll wait for a while; maybe I'll be lucky and get a price drop
Actually I was thinking about getting a Q9000, 4Gb, GTX260 SLI (the 280 SLI option is around 1100$ here!!) so with 1440x900 I guess it'll be enought. If somebody in the States offers to buy a better option for me would be really appreciated!! (paying it of course)
-
Well I hate this screen so I'm gonna go grab my friends broken fujitsu (was my old notebook) borrow his screen (glorious 2 CCFL CMO) and try and replace the lcd on the m17x with it. Wish me luck.
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Ahhh don't do that you definitely got a DUD screen.... mine is crystal clear, the bleed is all but gone and no grainess or shimmer
-
Yeah... why not call them up and ask for a replacement... you're acting as if they're all the same.
-
they are all the same.. they only use samsungs.. all the samsungs have graininess and I hate graininess more than anything.
-
I'd rather put in an lcd I know for a fact is superb
-
-
-
-
-
I say go for it. Be a pioneer in E2E LCD replacement. If no one tries it we will never know how easy/difficult it really is.
-
Well so far on my replacement, the bleed is still there but it really isnt that noticeable in games and appears to be getting better the more I use it.. Yay!!!! It may be a keeper...
The area around the start menu is slightly darker than the rest of the screen but not as bad as the first one.. This screen seems to be brighter as well...
So over all, this second notebook is doing better than the first one...
Only thing so far that is wrong is the lights in the speaker area up front dont light evenly... aqua is not aqua.. u can see one light dark blue and the other is greenish.. lol.. geez.. get some issues fixed and have others...
The touch panel works great too.. It is so nice having volume buttons work when you press them.. -
Its always good to hear from someone who has had more then one LCD to prove to others how different one screen can be from the next . Mine is razor sharp and crystal clear . No grain period. White is blindingly bright and of course they all have the auto contrast issue so darks become darker .
-
oh definitely.. This is my third screen.. They have gotten better along the way..
I hope that after a week of heavy use, this one will settle even more. *crosses fingers*
Now to get the new bios.. -
hurray!
congrats kilthro -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Im with you Quad my screen is fantastic... and the bleed is so light its rediculous... not to mention it settles a little more everyday
-
TBH if the screen is good enough for browsing it's ok.
I'm not going to game on it anyway... 60hz is a no go for me
