you're going to be getting a gaming laptop and..not..game?

Why not get a 120Hz monitor to accompany it

    I'm not resolution-a-holic :D , i generally play on 1024 :D .

And TBH... 2x 1680 + the notebook lcd itself is more than enough for desktop lol

My bleed is also dissapearing?!? Every time I turn on the machine it looks like there is less and less bleed. I don't know how this works exactly, but I must say I am happier with it every day I have it. The screen is really bright, so bright I even have to dimm it when browsing. And no crisp on my display.

Maybe I have a good one? Or I'm not spoiled with such a beautifull screen... untill now! ;)

Minimum of 1920x1080 or it better be a small screen.

How do you know it is glued? Where did you get this info? If this is truly the case then I am sad to see such a lovely notebook go back due to the screen being so p1ss poor. I will just get an asus g71gx-a1 with the AUO dual lamp screen.

    :) Hello everybody again!!

Today I've called Dell to order my M17x and ask the LCD option, and surprise!! I've got my 1920x1200 screen (and the customized nameplate too :p ) The rep's been really professional and has given me all the explanations and possible options that I've been asking him, allways in a good mood (And I've asked a lot I assure you). He has told me that even if the specs or configs dissapear from the website, don't hesitate to ask the sales dept. as they've got an "advanced" screen where they can assure or not if all the options are disposable.

So the order is in "Production" now, and the EDD is 08/14/09, I'll cross my fingers!! :D :D

So far, ('til I get my hands on the computer and can try it) I'm giving a 9 to Dell Sales Dept in Spain; if they deliver the laptop on the EDD they'll get a 10. As soon as I get it I'll telll you how the screen is.

Conclusion: allways call and ask!! :)

Well ye the rep will always try and help you out to get their cut ;p . As they're not discontinueing the screen it'll still be available to ask for, just hope it doesn't delay you too much.

I got my M17X last week and the LCD (1200) is very impressive compared to anything I've used before. My PC monitor (19inch LCD) looks horrible in comparison because of the better resolution on the laptop and bleed is very small along the bottom.

Any news if AW/Dell will offer screens from manufacturers other than Samsung for the m17x?

I will update you all with what model screen mine ships with when I get it, ordered Friday.

And wouldn't the contract for the screen most likely be between Samsung and Flextronics not Samsung and Dell? Since they are the ODM?

Depends on how Dell works their contracts. lol

Dell has suppliers that setup shop right outside of their manufacturing facilities. I could get into a really long post on how there business model works (I have done it too many times here :)).

Anyway, simple answer would be Flex engineers and manufactures the base system that Dell has designed, but Dell ultimately (most likely)decides who they're going to for parts (they have a huge network and have the most pull/bargaining power I believe).

That is true and makes sense. I just figured the ODM picks alot of the hardware, dell just brands and sells it

It is actually more comforting to here that dell is influencing parts used due to their strength in that sector as you mentioned

I still have a hard time believing Samsung has made all the panels for the machine and been able to handle that many . In the past it was 3 or 4 manufactures for reasons of shortages and pricing etc . To put all that faith in one company is unlikely IMHO.

Everyone sees the panel number in the device manager but we also know that does not mean much as it more then likely wrong anyhow.

Nvidia reports the screen as a Seiko screen lol so im not sure until someone has ripped a couple apart that its for sure only them handling it .

Speculation of course but no rep or the like would know for certain its just one manufacture handling it .

I know Sleey0 will be here to chime in on this and try to disprove me :).

Yes but there can always be problems and you cant hold up the production of a whole machine because of a manufacture problem and is why in the past they always contracted atleast 3 to make them.

Maybe Sumsung is spreading the manufacturing of these LSD screens over 3 different factory's and can guaranty the supply, demanded by DELL-AW. Same story different scenario. (But this is just a Guess, I would do this if I was a giant like Samsung, "never bet on only one horse").

Dude, I agree that it is a dumb move to only have Sammy make these panels. And I don't want to disprove you - I'd rather you be right and we come to find out that there are other panel manufacturers supplying these panels!

However, everyone that has opened these things up has come up with Samsung labels and panels :D lol And wasn't there a direct2dell entry on the screen delays? I believe he said that Samsung was the sole manufacturer (but I could be mistaken).

I hope others will join the party (specifically LG; I always loved the XPS 17" LG panels).

I know I haven't been keeping up but I don't remember seeing anyone's M17x come up as a Seiko-Epson? That was with my old M170 or 1710 (don't remember). Could you link me to someone's M17x as showin Seiko?

It also seems that there are less complaints than the first batch that were sent out (mine, mandrake, etc that time frame of release on 6/2 up until about 7/2). So maybe production is being slowed down to provide better quality panels.

I don't know.... All I do know is that the panel I had wasn't bad at all. Games looked great on it and it was a very serviceable panel.

Could it have been better? Of course. They could have given us options of LED or RGBLED panels. But if you want the best 17" gaming laptop then your going to have to live with these current panels for the time being.

Also want to say that Dell is EXCELLENT with LCD replacements. So if Dell starts using another supplier you can request a panel replacement and maybe you'll get the newer panel.

    Cheers!!!!

Yes if they use a diff manufacturer down he road. I will be the one of the first one getting a replacement.

My new notebook's screen is better than the old but there is still that darker area right where the start menu opens up.. I dont know why, the rest of the screen is much better than my previous ones but that area is not a brightly lit as the rest of the screen. This is a common theme i have seen on all three screens that I have had..

Now the back light bleed isnt as bad on the bottom and I hope that over the next week or so, it will settle in and be non existent..

well hopefully my screen will be problem free when I get it (although I am not a picky person at all on these matters - as long as no dead pixels I am usually happy)

Called in yesterday to check on order, got it expedited, shipping refunded, and upgraded from 3-5 day to next day Air. Woot! (I now prefer the customer care people HUGELY over the actual Sales Reps haha)

Yea to be honest, in most games the screen is going to look awesome.. the reason I have had issues with it, is I play wow quite a bit and have chat boxes as this game relies a lot on typed text...
going from my desktop monitors and RGB LED laptop screen (even my old laptop panels were not like this) to this ccfl, it was a big downgrade in my opinion and only really noticeable when trying to read the text boxes.. SO this is why people probably haven't noticed it as much as I have.

They are located lower left where the start menu would open and this appears to be the darkest part of the whole screen.. If I move them anywhere else on the screen, they look much better but unfortunately no other area better suites them where they are not in my way..
If it wasn't for this in wow, i probably would not have noticed the dark area as much or it wouldn't have bothered me that much.

I have turned the background to black and you can see a big difference in the lighting consistency in that part of the screen...

With that said, this last screen is better than my previous ones and I am hoping it gets better with some sustained use..

Mine also said that in the nVidia control panel.

I think my panel looks awesome as well, but it also has the dark area all the way across the screen like kilthro's has, and it's worse right over the start menu. The bleed is getting better at the bottom, but the dark spot is right above the bleed area so it actually accents the bleed and makes it look worse. In games, the display looks awesome as you can't notice any of that stuff anyway. But when browsing sites or looking at something with light colors, that dark spot is really annoying. Hopefully my replacement one will be better.

Exactly my problem.. So i am not the only one.. I agree, I think since there is little bleed there and then that dark spot, it is really accented so it seems to be bad.. and really only when I am trying to read text.. other things arent that bad with that area.. I can see it but not that bothersome.

To clarify something again: There is no such thing as Seiko Epson displays in notebooks, that's just one of the urban legends going around.

Some software tools misinterpret the "SEC" abbreviation as Seiko Epson Corporation rather than Samsung Electronics Corporation. This topic has been beaten to death around here, needless to say, every single "SEC" display has had a Samsung logo at the back, regardless of what conspiracy theories people had come up with.

Will be running a repair centre soon and theres a few M17x's there. One with a 1920 screen. Mine has the 1440.
Will also be transplanting the Q9300 into mine as well

Not so surprising actually. You see, the same things that make it a good gaming laptop also make it good for other applications like multimedia. That is, of course, it they can get the screen issue fixed.

Lol Dutchy . Yes it was me speaking on it . It really is not a huge deal. The screen is still gorgeous just wish it didnt have it is really all i was getting at . Some game are rather dark by default and they become that much darker due to the effect .
