I can see that the core of the gtx485m is bigger than one from gtx460m, Is it a problem for the heatsink in R3?

it comes with a heatsink if you order from RJTECH but not sure it it will fit the R3

I think we all need to give KipCoo a shout-out and let him know that the 485M works in the R3 and thank him for all the support he has given us, When we do find out it works.

The HD 6970m is a square with an 45* core
The gtx460m is a square with an square core
The gtx485m is a big rectangle with a rectangle core 1.5 bigger than gtx460m

==> I undertstand now why dell not chose it... I feel it bad right now lol

Yes, you'll most likely need a proper heatsink to keep the card cool.

Exactly! You don't want anything but thermal compound between the die and heatsink.

It may or may not have to, as long as it covers the core you should be fine, but well see.

Why don't you guys take the heatsink out and have a look at it, measure the copper surface and compare with the size of the cards die.

As long as it actually fits it might be ok, dont gfx card manufacturers use larger metallic 'covers' over the die like cpus? Where only the heat spreader areas over the cores matter as far as thermal paste / heat spreader contact?. I dunno I hope it works out.

No both mobile CPUs and GPU dies are exposed, only protected by a thin layer of varnish.

No I think what hes asking is if the only places that need to be covered are the Core's where the metal is.

Yesterday, with pics, i compare both cards gtx460 and gtx485; the gtx485 has a rectangle core , the width is smaller with 3mm and the Length is bigger with Max 6mm.
So I think it's no so bad.. let us know LVneptune.

I think the correct rectangle heatsink interface would be important for efficient heat control but for testing if it works in the R3 shouldn't present any problems

It could be a possibility that the cost of this card itself may have been another reason Dell has been reluctant.

And as some of you have mentioned that the surface area differences may not have worked to Dell's advantage to have one uniform set of heat sinks for various cards offered under one Model.

Since the Dell Studio XPS issue dell has been on the back pedal to come out aggressively in their offerings. Dell Studio XPs had Heat and throttling issues since their introduction through their models upto Dell Studio XPS 1647. That model was a big hit, but thermal design and power draw issues marred its entire existence.

As for this Nvidia card. If it was offered and things went wrong, Dell would have a costly affair in their hands to deal with. A tooth fairy told me, testing is still being conducted.

There is a reason for its appearance and disappearance from Dell site in Jan.I hope you folks are successful.

precisley what I think mate, too risky for early deployment and marketing, I believe when we have a stable product and they have done some extensive testing it will be introduced, can't see how they can avoid it

Personally I believe they removed it to sell the lower-end cards now, then in about 6 months refresh it with upgraded cards :)

Everyone at tech support says the 485M *SHOULD* work.

BTW: It's sitting at my house right now, might close my store a bit early but worst case, 3 hours from now you will all know :)
