That was one of the elegant things about ATI's approach to the new chips. They are smaller and cheaper to produce bo ut faster and better at their job than the 4xxx series.

So it was always intended that you would be able to get an upgrade for roughly the same price point.

I'm sorry, my bad, after reading through the topic I 'assumed' Dell temporarily pulled out of the crossfire 5870 config completely. I will be more thorough next time.

the 920xm is also a highly binned chip, so it will do more with the same or less voltage than a 720qm or 820qm

that is the real reason they cost more, they are all cherry picked

Alex: Yep, 4GB or 8GB if you want dual channel. I can't even confirm that 3GB SODIMMs exist, I get mixed search results from Google. From what I saw, none of the major manufacturers produce 3GB sticks and nearly every search result I got was for a 3x1GB triple channel kit. 3 is a weird number in computer-land, so I guess it's not totally surprising.

Myself, I was going to get an M17x-R2 with 4GB of 1066, then just trade it in at my local computer store for some 1333. Now that I'm looking at it, the option to select 1333 is gone.. at least from the Canadian page. Strange.

What processor did you have selected? You must have the i7 720qm or higher for the 1333MHz to show up.

Silly me, yeah, the option returned when I picked the 720QM. By default, it has the 520M selected. I skipped through the configuration just to see how much the price difference was.

The US configurator gives the option for 4GB of 1333, but sadly, it's missing from the Canadian one. Only a $30 difference, too.

so basically: refurbished mobility 4870 crossfire.

now on it looks like techniqal issues to me than selling tricks. the technician from Dell wouldnt say something fake as for techniqal issues.

and again i guess its power issues.

    Hello people,

My new m17x has been shipped (only ordered friday 23 april) This was part replacement for my problematic xps M1710 which i got full credit back 1525 gbp . I added extras like rgb led, 820qm and dual crossfire and extra warrenty. I payed an extra 910gbp. Think i got a good deal, But my question is The dell rep made no comment about the new ATI cards and mine has been shipped with dual 4870's, i didnt even see it go into pre production. Would I be able to change them to 5870's easly and how would i do this. By the way i live in u.k

    Many Thanks Ant

    Hello,

as of right now, more clear answer would be a solid NO

first of all, the dual 5870s arent available anywhere now which means that you cannot return your current ones and configure with dual 5870s

secondly, the parts for 5870s are not available. i thought i had the part number, but apparently they were for 4870s... so basically there is no way you can buy the 5870s from dell WITH the crossfire cable

thirdly, let say somehow you got the cable and the cards. NO ONE has yet verified (at least in this entire forum) that the dual 5870s would work. people have yet to confirm that there is or isnt cable connection in the 5870s in the first place.

so the answer would be NO for now. just hang tight and wait. see what happens. i dont think anyone in public really knows whether it is possible or not for sure.

Origin Pc released their 18 inch with dual 285ms, asus could not make dual 5870s happen with their latest, and AW is still holding up. there might be something besides just the driver issue. up to this point, it seems like it is just not marketing bs. something technical behind it perhaps. but again, this is all speculating/educated guesses with good infos

Why did so many people update their sig's to dual 5870' just because they hit the purchase button? its pretty clear that they don't exist (save maybe a dell testing lab).

lol. In my case my new system will have 5870s. The only thing undetermined is if it will be with the system or purchased afterward. Besides that it's just a sig, means nothing.

I just rang Dell UK to get a price on an M17X, originally i asked for a price on a system with a single 5870 card.

The rep i spoke to asked what i would be using the system for, he then said he could do me a special price on the 5870 in crossfire. I explained to him what people had said on here that the 5870 in crossfire appeared for a few days on the Dell site then it dissapeared.

He said to me that its deffinitley an option now, he said its not on the site yet as it takes a few days to get the discounts in place before it appears on the site, he said its not just a matter of putting up as an option as quite a bit goes into it before it reaches the site.

He is sending me a quote by email, make of that what you will.

I`m not saying that the 5870 in crossfire is definitely an option, i`m just passing on what the rep told me and he said its on his sytem as an option and that he can offer it to people.

As you know with dell reps, what one person says can be totally different to what another person says at Dell.

This was the reply i just got from him.

The Quote for the 5870 crossfire is coming out at almost 3000 with the spec you want.

I recommend you please wait a week before placing an order.
You might get a better deal.

I just hope someone who gets their M17x with the single 5870, opens it up and checks for a Crossfire connector, and also checks the BIOS for us, and if it's an A03 BIOS, I hope they can upload it for us.
