guys good news for you all.

from deep inside Dell IRL i know that they have four choices for the gpus. NO MATTER the website. Dont ask me how i know this. i was lucky enough to be informed from someone with full access to their database

    the gpu choices currently are:

    1 4870
    2 CF 4870
    3 5870
    4 CF 5870

the last one will be my replacement system with. i may have it in mostly three weeks. YEAH!

i just hope my 5870s wont be 4870s finally because our discussion here makes me concious.

so my advice for those who order for first time (and not get replacement like me) is to wait a bit longer.

The only way I can see them offering all 4 GPU's is if the R1 is offered with 4870s, and R2 only gets the option of single or dual 5870s.
You said not ask, but really, who's not going to ask? How did you just happen to be informed that, and how reliable is your source?

They are done with the R1, it is only on their site to clear inventory. It will not get any new options

the source is more than reliable as he has access to all those. he figured out by replacement system and ordered it.

and its not R1 as there is not R1 with i7.lool

Like all of you, I'm trying to find a way to replace my existing R2 that I received last week with a xfire 5870. I told customer service I was having issues with my existing system and need to replace the video cards with 5770. I got a voice-mail late Friday acknowledging my request, so we'll see what happens today.

I'm wondering if I should go ahead and order when the xfire 5870s hit or wait for sata 6gb and usb 3.0. The new SSDs are starting to come out now in sata 6gb.

    What are you talking about?

Are you saying you have an R2 with a xfire 5870??? Are you sure you are not confused with the 4870...

AW does not carry the 5770 cards there is no way you will get them from AW.

I still wouldn't count on getting the 5870s, to reduce the chances of another frustration ;)

Nothing, they just have some guy that randomly check the websites of manufacturers and then writes and article. I am guessing he saw the sites of UK last week and wrote the article then.

    It just got published...

Guess they should double check their sources first before publishing something. I'm sure that story will get buried very quickly since they post so much new stuff per day.

when purchasing this beast, can anyone justify upgrading from core i7 1.7GHz to i7 2GHz and the leap in price? is there a whole lot of difference?..
just looking at the price AU$799.70 with that I could just about fly to the US and get this thing almost a thousand $$ cheaper.. what a jib

hopefully. actually i should have learnt from the past and dont speak before i have it in my hands. my quarantee is also renewed for one more year since the machine leaves factory. so frustration will also charge Dell with more services once again if something happens

everything is the right person at the right position.

to be honest i would wait. but replacement is for free and i have a no working M17X right now beside me (no they didnt take it back yet).

and actually if such an AW is released i wont be able to order it here as AW is not shipped here. So by replacement is the only way i can get it here.

another stupid regulation of Dell. they can ship replacements here but not new orders.

I think the i7 820 is a great compromise in between the extreme edition and the low end i7.

Considering that you're spending 3/5's of what a I920XM goes for on flea-bay, it's really better to just get the 720 and purchase an OEM 920 later on for ~$500. Unless you're not into the whole opening up your laptop for a cpu upgrade thing.

how lame.. they can't report anything worthwhile so they just spam and hope some sticks.

That's what I was thinking too. I will probably go with the 820 since I don't overclock. The stock speed difference is negligible.

I have no problem opening the laptop, the problem is it voids the warranty to change the CPU. If something happens, I would be without a warranty. That would be really bad.

Once the dual hd 5870 ati's come out in the m17x, I guess that you'll be safe for about 3 years if you can live with playing the newest games in 2014 with medium settings.

Though i'm thinking, if you plan to use that laptop for so long, what will cpu will be better? a 2.66 ghz corei7 or the corei7 with 1.6 ghz (which has more cores and newer architecture if i'm not mistaken).

So i'm not talking about optimal performance for current games, but also for the future. Any idea's? Or will the gpu's in crossfire be the bottleneck afterall?

2x5870 MR is about the same level as a single desktop 5850, right? tbh if we are talking directX 11 the I think the laptop will be pretty old schooled by 2012/3. Whether the ppl who buys AW would settling for mid range setting, is another matter... ;)

It's hard to know. It depends on the game. From benchmark it seems the 5870M is about the same as a desktop 5770 which is quite good...

This is the million dollar answer. The M17x will be viable for playing games, even if at reduced settings for *much* longer than it's owner is probably willing to play those games at those levels. Longer than the platforms natural heat dissapation limitions will allow as well before a card fries itself and you run out of warranty too. Cpu's are becoming less and less of a bottleneck these days, so all that matters is a decent gpu, of which CF 5870's is such. You could still play nearly every game out today on an old 7900GS/GT, and that card is 4+ years old.

Just got off phone with Dell sales rep in UK. The 5870 in crossfire is available. Stock shortage of 10 plus days restock has caused them to remove from web sales. but if you speak to an agent can be ordered. I am doing just that come end of week. Can't wait.

Shortage = (1) 5870 per person instead (2) 5870 person, so there will be enough to go around in the meantime.

Well the 4870cf are $300 now so the 5870cf will be a little more. Probably $350-$400.
