someone said Wednesday and Sunday are the primary online configuration update days. I haven't heard anything that says that's true, but that's the reasoning behind thinking Wednesday.

That's why I love our forum. Full of speculation which turn to be expectation and/or frustration :p

But that's Alienware, the world's largest boutique brand, offering high-performance systems for gamers and enthusiasts.

lol! the only people I've listened to so far are mandrake and Joker as far as release dates go, and that's only because apparently they've been right in the past.

    I'm saying Monday.
They wouldn't have taken the dual 4870 option off the site if something new was not coming relativly very soon.

I wouldn't take that as a good sign, 4870s disappeared from the Canadian site for over a week but they're back now. Sadface.

i have a bad feeling about the 5870 CF. it's either going to be legendary or epic fail.

too late, they've missed the last 3 tentative release days, so it's already fail, it's just a matter of how epicly fail it will be.

well... if 5870 CF is released and performance is better than desktop 5770 CF with no issues at all... then it may be legendary.... but it's like a 1% chance that's going to happen.

IMHO People can (better if organized the american way) show their convictions, refuse to being manipulated by so called representatives and stop buying any AW as an evidence of (at least) dissapointment and wait until after E3 (June 15-17 2010). Don't follow just your instinct, follow your mind...

Yup, the guy I spoke to asked me how soon I was planning to purchase the M17x. I asked him when the 5870x2 will come out, and he said about 6 months. LOL He obviously wanted me to purchase it at that moment. Asked me to answer a survey afterward. lol Screw that.
Oh yeah, I first called to ask about that 40% off HD display that went up on the site today. He said it was already marked down to 200 bucks, but it's been 200 bucks for the 1200p upgrade for a while now.

Everyone just needs to calm down and go play some games, it will come one day. I'm enjoying my new single 5870. Will I get xfire 5870 when it comes out? Probably, but for the time being I'm very happy with my single 5870.

I benchmarked around 14300 on 3dmark06 with no overclock. Otherwise I'm not big on benchmarking, I actually prefer to play my games instead of running benchmarks all day.

    Cryis XGA
    4870 x2 52 frames (8% faster)
    5870 48 frames

    3DMark06
    4870 x2 score 14496 (14% faster)
    5870 score 12696

    3DMark05
    4870 x2 score 18522 (3% faster)
    5870 18017

By Christmas there will be a host of new Directx11 games. Yes the 4870 x2 is a little faster but the 5870 Directx11 will look much better.

The advantages of the 5870 Direct x11 are as follows.

Tessellation – Tessellation is implemented on the GPU to calculate a smoother curved surface resulting in more graphically detailed images, including more lifelike characters in the gaming worlds that you explore.

Multi-Threading – The ability to scale across multi-core CPUs will enable developers to take greater advantage of the power within multi-core CPUs. This results in faster framerates for games, while still supporting the increased visual detailing.

DirectCompute – Developers can utilize the power of discrete graphics cards to accelerate both gaming and non-gaming applications. This improves graphics, while also enabling players to accelerate everyday tasks, like video editing, on their Windows 7 PC.

Crysis 2 will use Direct x11. Enough said.

    Tessellation is a big deal.

ATI offered it back in the day on the 8500 series. CS supported it and the difference was noticeable. But engines went towards other effects and it was forgotten.

But in 2010 and 2011 a lot of games will support the feature and you will really start to see a big difference.

15% in games I'd say, not more. The 5870s are awesome because they overclock heavily, about 250 mhz more than the 4870s can. With a max OC, they should be about 25-30% faster in synthetic tests. But the key thing to keep in mind is nobody in their right mind will be running dual 5870s at 900mhz or higher because they generate too much heat. If Dell hasn't modified the M17x for these, I'm almost certain people will see higher overall system temps because of the internal heat created by these cards.

Tesselation is definitely something to look forward to in a year or two when it takes off. However, by then the 5870s will be old news. Right now the biggest advantage the 5870s have over the 4870s is the core being produced on a smaller manufacturing process, thats about it.

Who knows? maybe in the next CES AW will show an air conditioned M18x wich can stand easily the 900mhz. And the next thread will be on how to find a shoulder strap (and a shoulder accordingly) to take the 58 pounds weight of this "laptop"...

Can anyone with 5870 post some working temps here? Just wondering how hot are they non-OC-ed. Preferably with m17x (I imagine m15x's cooling is a little bit different).
