What's the status of the couple of people from the uk that ordered dual 5870 CF on the phone? They haven't posted in the order status thread. I wonder if their orders are still valid or got cancelled.

I have a quick question. Is there going to be a possibility of games becoming CPU limited with a crossfire setup when playing with the core i7 720QM once running dual 5870's? I haven't run SLI/Crossfire in a long time and back when I was using it CPU limitation was a problem. I was originally looking at getting a M15x but now I'm leaning heavily towards a M17x and was wondering if the 820 will be better in the long run. Thanks for any input!

I doubt you'll be CPU limited with an i720 at 1920x1200. The games that will really limit you are RTS, those rely heavily on the CPU. Source engine games and GTA IV also benefit from a higher clocked CPU. The more devs release multithreaded games, the more the CPU will become a factor.

so what your saying is it better to have a faster dual core processor (620)for rts then having a quad core 720

RTS game or not, a properly multi-threaded application will run faster on a quad-core CPU. Some of the older games that aren't really designed to multi-thread may still benefit from faster single-thread execution, but you can expect that sort of thing to fall by the wayside. Despite the lower clock speeds, a quad-core CPU usually has more total computing power. Multi-threading is important because it properly distributes the load across the cores.

if you buy single 5870 with a CF connector for m17x right now, can you crossfire it if you get another one?

the point is if it will have the appropriate firmware . other than that it can be configured as crossfire (if ever be released as such).

Its bloody available! In getting a r1 replacement with r2 due to issues! After Reading this I phoned sales as a 'new' customer and said i want cf if was possible and he went to check he said yes, I asked how much he said same as 4870! I asked him why wasn't it up as dual and he said it was due to stock!

what makes me wonder is that so as to order with dual 5870s (even if not available or cancelled later) they have to have the option on their pcs.

I don't buy the inventory excuse. The single 5870s are crossfire enabled, they can simply pair those up and offer them in crossfire. They either want to launch it at E3 so they have something to talk about since it's so close now or they have a technical issue. I'd like to think it's just stupid marketing getting in the way. Either way I don't care, I just bought another M17x-R2 yesterday off an NBR member and it should be here by Wed.

i guess someone of you in US (i say US because of the perfect services you have there) and R2 with dual 4870s could buy two single 5870s from Dell and then apply the second 4870 heatsink and crossfire on one of those 5870s and tell us results.
if something goes wrong you could just return them.

It's really intended as a college graduation/bday gift for my sister (split between my dad and I) since she expressed interest in owning an M17x--apparently she loves the style and display after seeing mine. It's up to her what she decides to do with it after receiving it. I'll still be getting myself a dual 5870m system eventually.

I think you are right about it possibly being technical. Looking at the A05 release notes, there were several fixes for the 5870. A couple were related to the dual broadway xt. They may be having some ongoing issues with the dual cards to work out. That's probably why the dates keep getting pushed back. Waiting for E3 doesn't make sense to me since the single card is out already.

I just don't see why people don't just try it. Buy two cards and stuff them in, A05 BIOS support it and the vbios do. I don't see they don't flash the vbios on the cards and see what happens. I'm thinking of doing it actually.

5870s aren't supported in M17XR1 Unless you have an R2, I would assume the connectors would be the same. No reason to change it...
