I like the Zalman NC2000, thick aluminum.... guarantee 5-10c drop.... build quality is nice, little pricey tho compared to others.

How? The notebook sucks air from underneath the laptop and blows hot air out at the back.

I have the NC2000 and I quite like it. It's a great cooler for sure. However I didn't really find that it was that effective for the R3 since it concentrates the airflow to the front of the computer. It keeps the front of my laptop cool to the touch but the rear where most of the heat was being generated was still quite warm. I found that it worked better if you line up the rear of the computer with the first line of holes.

Yeah, I hear ya. My temps still drop even though the air holes dont get the back, I have seen 5c-8c and sometimes a little more drop, since the thick aluminum gets quite cool too. But if the holes lined up with rear also, it prolly drop like crazy.

I use an older cryo laptop cooler for my M17x R2. Works fairly well. I also like to keep my window ac unit to a bone chilling 50 degrees. Just keep a blanket handy.

I have noticed temp drops with my Cryo. I did remove the top mesh out though, and it has dropped my temps up to 10'c for some games on the top end. I also have seen my idle temps drop up to 6'c.

Did you do a before and after to see if the mesh makes a difference? Might have to remove mine if it helps that much. :D

Yah, I don't have the SS anymore because I did this a few fresh installs ago, but I can do it again just gotta find the mesh for it. lol I remember that before I removed the mesh the temps only dropped by I want to say 3-4 degrees... maybe 6 off the top end, and I know it didn't do anything for me really at idle. Anyway, it's really easy to remove the housing to get to the top mesh: just a few screws, a slide to the right, flip over the housing, and then you just pull it off. I also just cleaned my vents/HS, and my ambient temp is around 70-75 degrees F. Max temps playing BF3 max @ 92/90 just sitting on the cryo no fans, full speed it never gets past 81/80. I have an 850/1200 OC on both my 5870's will post SS of temps with cryo with and without fans running and if I can find my mesh I will do one with and without as well.

Back when I first got my window ac unit I decided to test it out and see if my laptop ran cooler. So I cranked that SOB as cold as it would go, sat in front it with my M17x with cryo laptop cooler, and loaded up The Witcher. Half an hour later I was putting on sweat pants, sweater, thermal socks, and a blanket. Good news was my laptops fans never kicked into high. Just got to play in a tundra. :D

Yes please keep me posted. Though I might as well give it a try myself. I just never wouldve thought that mess would hinder the cooler that much. But, close to a 10 degree drop is too good to pass up.

Just received my Cooler Master SF-19. Tried it out on full blast and immediately my CPU temps dropped by an additional 2-3 degrees even after repaste (Repaste dropped my cpu temps about 6-10 degrees under load). This is not under load though. i just opened the thing up and gave it a quick whirl. My CPU temps are stabilizing at about 48 degrees right now.

I'll do a more detailed test later on my GPU and CPU under full load and post results. I plan to mod the SF-19 with some better fans and possibly a better mesh.

More info: CPU has a 5% overclock

I'd be interested to know which fans and mesh you go with for the mods.

BTW, speaking of fans, check your other thread. Got a reply.

Just did a run a Furmark to test the drop in temps while using the cooler.

    Here are the results...
This run was done with the cooler on full blast and no change to the fan control using HWiNFO. No overclock to the GPU.

If I were have changed the fan control I would have probably increased the RPM to about 4000 which would drop the temps a couple more degrees (For current). My max Temps would have dropped also.

Here are my temps with no cooler and no fan control using Furmark.

Note: GPU was repasted with ICD 7.

FWIW I have a Thermaltake Massive23 CS for my xps m1730 that does an excellent job (stock fans don't kick in under normal operating), except one thing-it's a tad bit too small. Ordered an M17x r3 and arrived here doing research.

I also really like the Cooler Master U3. Lightweight, and sturdy. The three completely positionable fans really are a bonus...you get to put them where you want them-like in the corners under the air intake. I honestly don't know why people buy coolers with fans that are permanently mounted. What good is it doing blowing air on my battery???

The speed is adjustable (but no "Off" setting, unless you unplug it) and they aren't very loud at all.
It doesn't fit well on your lap though since it is not a flat bottom...but it works very well on a desk.

I still don't understand one thing, the airflow of the actual laptop fan is blocked by the cooler (well, somewhat) just lifting the laptop and using the actual fans may have a better solution, just my thoughts

U3 seems the best IMO....only $28 on amazon and placing the fans directly where the fan ports are for the two GPU's (if u run cfx/sli) and one under the main motherboard/cpu are optimal conditions.

As said, doesn't make much sense blasting the battery and underside

Yea, even lifting the back end up with water bottle caps or w/e does a whole lot

The idea behind all cooling solutions is to provide more air flow to the laptop fans. Whether this is achieved by lifting up the laptop with a book, cutting holes in the table to line up with the vents or using external fans to force air to the vents, the result is more or less the same; increased airflow to the intake vents. It just comes down to which works the best for your particular laptop.

There are other coolers such as these:

that actually draw the hot air out and away from the vents. They seem interesting and I'm curious to see how well they work.

The U Stand allows you to place the fans where you want them as well, only it also lifts the laptop up to eye level like the Ergostand.

I was looking at the U3 and from what I have read it should be good.

The M17x R3 seems (to me anyway) to be bigger than a regular 17 inch notebook.
I say this judging from my laptop bag that fit my old 17" laptop without any issues and my old M17x R3 would just barely fit If I litterally crammed it in there.

I was thinking of getting the 19" version of the U3 over the 17" version. Does the M17x R3 fit on the 17" version with out difficulties or am I better off getting the bigger version?

I use the Just Mobile Lazy Couch, it is just two rubber feet.

There was another thread a while back and some guy did testing. He found that half an inch was the best amount to raise it. You got like 8C decrease at half an inch, 10C at a full inch, and 11C at over an inch with fans.

With that knowledge I decided the additional noise of fans and such just wasn't worth it, and the Lazy couch is portable and raises the machine over an inch.

You probably won't find something better than the U3. As far as a laptop cooler goes, i'd say it is right up there at the top.

I've gone the Yoda route (Vitimin Water bottlecaps lol). Its amazing what raising the back a little will do for your temps

the u3 is almost a perfect fit to the m17x. there is approximately 1-2 millimeter space on either side. the u2 claims to fit up to 17" laptops but it is only 13" wide so there would be considerable overhang on either side of it and it only has two fans as opposed to the u3 having 3 fans

This technique produces great results at no cost. I found a couple of shock absorber bushings in my tool box junk drawer and they work great. The rubber keeps the laptop from sliding around and gives a nice 1"+ lift. These are easy to travel with, too. This might fall into the " you might be a redneck if..." scenario, but free is a very good price. ;)

I just received the U Stand today from Amazon. Its too small. The fans cannot be properly moved so they are under the vents for the GPU and CPU. Looks like the U3 is the best option for now.

so i am trying to buy a cooler for my m17x r3 and really like the looks of the notepal x2, but I'm not sure if my laptop will fit properly.

    here's a link: Newegg.com - Cooler Master Notebook Cooler Model NotePal X2

    it says it is 14.76 x 11.42 x 1.7 inches

do you think that area will be enough for the m17x?

    thx

The R3 measures a little over 16 inches wide so it will be wider than the cooler meaning the bottom of the laptop will be resting directly on the cooler. I would suggest getting something designed to accommodate a 17 inch laptop like the U3 or U-stand.

Wouldn't it be better to put the object in the middle? I could definitely feel air flow at the two left and right ends of the laptop. That aside, I did this and got 52-56 degrees as opposed to using my old 17inch laptop cooler, max fan speed, and got 56-57 temp at standby.

I would go with the U3. The U-Stands fans cannot be placed in the optimal positions needed for the intakes on the R3. Also, the lowest hight setting for the stand is waaaay to high.
