I got a friend with a U3 that doesn't want his fans, he just wants the stand. So if I get one, I'll have his set giving me a U6 effectively.
You can achieve this by buying two U3's. -
-
Dunno. I hear Google is a nice tool...
-
Yes i remember u telling em that
omg : COOLER MASTER NOTEPAL U3 NOTEBOOK COOLER FANS. NEW | eBay
30 dollars? :/ -
Any thoughts about the Xpad Slim for the M17X?
I've read that simply having elevation will help the fans work more efficiently. I have a friend who swears by his Xpad Slim. -
i am using Cooler Master SF19, it takes the temp 5C down
-
Just use aftermarket desktop case fans, they're better anyway, you'll get more air movement and heat draw. Mount a few 80 - 100mm (rubber screw/plugs) fans on the U3 under the gpu & cpu vents, I'd wager you see some pleasing temp drop results. Guessing, you'll spend about $10 per fan. Personally, I'd wire all of them together (the stock fans + the two add-ons mentioned a moment ago) and use an AC adapter. Obviously you save your battery from the power draw, but you also help protect your rig from any possible future issues relating to electrical shorts (and the like) relating to your cooler.

I am about to buy a alienware m17x, i was just thinking what the best notebook coolers for this monster laptop
Please include price as well experiences if you have any -
People are saying the CoolerMaster U3 is the best thing for it. I am going to try a Zalman NC-3000S. My neighbor has one for this R4 and it seems pretty functional. I will let you know how it goes.
-
1.Cooler Master U3
2. Bottle Caps
3. All other NB coolers
/thread -
When recommending or asking for recommendations about laptop coolers, it would be good to know if the device is actually being or going to be used on your lap. Some of these devices have sharp edges or are designed so that they are not at all suited to being used on one's lap.
-
I asked in another thread in the accessories section about a good cooler that's comfortable to put it on my lap to use, and someone Recommended Cooler Master X3. If you will not be moving around much, it seems Cooler Master U3 is the unanimous choice.
-
Absolutely. As U3 is not suitable for lap use, and so aren't bottle caps...
But to anwser the question as OP stated it implying on best cooling features U3 is he best due to its ability to perfectly allign all three fans with intake vents. -
Seems like 3 of the more popular options are the aforementioned Cooler Master U3, which is a bit more portable and convenient, due to being USB-powered and having re-positionable fans, so you can place them where you need them most.
Two other crowd favorites are NZXT Cryo LX and Cooler Master Storm SF-19. These are powered by an adapter and move a LOT of air, as well as have adjustable fan speeds. People have reported noise as being an issue though... especially with SF-19. I've owned all 3, and currently use the Cryo LX... although I've had good results with all of them. Be aware, though, that Cryo can be hard to find these days; I believe the company is working on a new model, but when THAT's gonna be out, is yet unknown.
PS None of these are intended for lap use, btw. -
OK, then Zalman my neighbor uses, the length is fine, but the m17x is 1/2" wider than the cooler so it hangs over the edges a little bit. The fan itself is rather large so you can run it slower to keep the noise down with the same airflow. But it is a table top cooler, not one that can be used on one's lap.
-
I play a lot of BF3 multiplayer on 64 Player maps (CQ); Before i used the SF-19 i used to get around 85 deg. as my max CPU temp, after playing an hour of BF3 @ 1080p and auto settings...
After i started using the SF-19, i have never seen my temps cross 80 deg. at exactly the same settings... Thats a difference of 5+ degrees, and i love it!
On the downside though, there is a persistent hum when the cooler runs... Not very loud but noticeable enough... Also, i believe this thing has a slightly expensive price tag....
All in all, i would say am happy with the SF-19Oh, and did anyone mention it has flashing lights?? Goes well with my r3! Completes its alien look
Editing! Although i know the r3 isnt really destined for ones lap, i *somehow* manage to use the SF-19 with the r3 on my lap -
i'm using notepal cooler master U3 and it is the coolest one I have ever had. The fans can be adjusted right exactly at where the laptop fans are, they suck the hot air out fast and quietly.
Why not zalman and SF-19? Here are the things:
- They are running with one big fan, not 3 adjustable fans like U3
- More expensive than U3 (i guess)
Believe me, I did open a topic like you before a year ago and I came up with the SF-19 since its cool with awesome look. But hey, that is not what it is made for. It needs to work efficiently and suck as much hot air out as possible.
Go for the U3, you won't get disappointed. -
-
I use a Coolmaster U3 also. works great
-
looks like am outnumbered
but yes, i do admit U3 works great too, though i personally dont own it, but have seen it at a couple of friends places...
-
U3 owner here as well. I use a wireless 360 controller for gaming so I velcro'd the adapter and the fan speed switch to the bottom. Love it.
-
So the u3 seems to be the consensus for tabletop use but what's the best cooler if you are going to be using it primarily or often on your lap?
-
Would you all still recommend the Cooler Master U3 if it's being put on the bed/couch a lot?? Do the fans on the bottom get in the way of that?
If not, what would you recommend for this scenario? lol
In for the best for lap option... lol
I mainly have mine on my bed/couch/lap, so the U3 doesn't seem like the best choice for that. Other options? -
U3 definitely top pick for table top, I can vouch for that one. Combined with a lap tray though, it works perfectly. I'm using this one.

More people said U3 because U3 are much cheaper. But the craftsmanship of U3 also looks cheaper. On the other hand, NZXT Cryo LX looks expensive and start of the arts.
You can still buy Cryo LX on EBay or Amazon.
One note to all cooling pad owners. I often read reviews complaining their cooling pads broken in one or two months. You have to change M17X BIOS setting so cooling pad won't draw power from M17X USB port. Otherwise your cooling pads will run 24 hours a day non-stop and die very soon. -
Agreed. You want to have some sort of stiff wooden or plastic board to put on the bed/couch, then the cooler and notebook on top of that. I just bought a piece of plywood and cut it down to size for my m17x. Works great, and my Zalman NC-3000S fits perfectly on it. Very simple, but very effective.
-
At the end of the day, it's a piece of equipment that for the most part is hidden by a hulking laptop. Why go for looks and expense? In my opinion, two factors should be considered. Whether it's fit for the purpose you require i.e. lap or surface usage and it's ability to cool. Aesthetics should be last on the list. Not that the U3 is butt ugly anyway. It's also very portable and comes with a strap, you can slot the M17x in the underside and strap the cooler to it making it easy to transport with the laptop.

And while it may appear cheaper in pictures online, I didn't really get that impression when I was shopping but to each their own, it's a lightweight machined piece of solid aluminium that doesn't look or feel like it'll be falling apart any time soon. -
It's unfortunate that it seems no one really knows of a good cooler that's designed for lap use. Using a lap table or cutting a custom sized piece of plywood is all well and good for using in your bedroom or living room but doesn't really seem conducive to laptop use on the road or anywhere other than really a single spot in your house.
-
Maybe part of the reason for that is the size/weight of the laptop. I'm a decently sized guy and I wouldn't consider putting the M17x on my lap, even though that's how I'm most comfortable using my MBP. Now I have back issues and whatnot, but it's still a pretty big laptop to fit. Add some kind of cooling pad and I could see it being a bit of a mess, especially for someone with a smaller frame.
Plus there aren't a whole lot of cooling pads on the market that offer comfort, design, solid construction, reliability, and clearance room for the fans while placed on non-flat surfaces all in one. I wish there were, as I could use a pad with fans that worked well while sitting on my bed. -
Granted I'm not the biggest of people, but I just can't begin to imagine having this behemoth on my lap and being comfortable.
To be honest, it wasn't till I read more in to this forum, that people were actually buying Alienware gaming laptops with the intention of putting them in their laps! Maybe the <17"ers. -
Well I'm 6'6" 250. Hell if I wasn't I wouldn't have bought a 17" in the first place.
I've found a few that seem more designed for lap use:
Targus Lap Chill Mat | AWE55US
NotePal Infinite - Cooler Master
But I don't really have any insight into whether they're at all good or which is best. Thanks for your feedback though, I appreciate all the help. -
Of those two, I'd say the Targus one looks more suited for lap use.
-
I'd agree. The Targus also has pretty good reviews, there and on Amazon. It's a little smaller than the M17x, so you'd have about a half inch of laptop hanging off each side of the pad. That might cut your vents off partially from the fans in the pad if they aren't adjustable. It's hard to tell from those pictures.
-
I just bought the Zalman 2000.
Pretty crap and pointless. fans in qrong place. Offers Zero airflow to Laptop. Temps on stand are 70+ off and raised with book.....65C lol!!!
The lights are, erm, nice though!! -
-
what lap tray is this? I just ordered a m17x and this looks really cool for couch gaming lol -
Just noticed there is a $10 mail-in rebate on the Notepal U3, I will probably buy this one now. Thought to share this with others: Amazon.com: Cooler Master NotePal U3 Laptop Cooling Pad with Three Configurable 80mm Fans (R9-NBC-8PCK-GP): Electronics
-
UK only. No idea if it's available in other parts of the world. If I was in the US I'd go for:

I use mine all the time for couch gaming

Still gotta wait for the laptop to come in first to use it LOL no laptop but I already have a stack of parts waiting -
Hi
I'm looking for a good laptop cooler for my m17x. Reason for this is when I play games the noise from the fans is kinda loud. Hoping a cooler will bring the noise down a little.
But I have no clue which to get? Or what will fit the m17x?
What do you guys use?
Hope to hear from you
Regards from Denmark

Hi,
I think this might help you out.
Basicly the NZXT Cryo LX is the best BUT, it not very cheap and a very rare object in this day and age.
I myself will order the Zalman NC3000 because it's very cheap and you can place it on your lap without sealing off the fan. -
I use a Note Pal Cooler Master U3. It has three fans which you can clip to an point on the bottom of the cooler so each fan will stream air directly into the vents on the notebook.
-
-
How well does the cooler master u3 fit the m17x? Looks quite good to be able to place the fans where you want. Also what did you see temperature wise? 5-8c drops?
-
Have you checked your temperatures? A cooler may not even be necessary, sometimes a quick dust off may do the trick.
Alienware Laptops: Temperature check
That and keeping the laptop in a tilted position to allow airflow through the vents will help decrease your temps.
By the way, which m17x revision do you have? -
It's just unavoidable that the fan will blast when you play games. I personally set my internal fans at 2400 rpm permanently and have my Cryo LX run at full speed. It gets around 66-68 C with 950/1375 when I play Witcher 2 on ultra settings w/ ubersampling.
When you are looking for a cooling pad, make sure you look at something has replaceable fans. Somehow, it feels like you are paying for the housing instead of a cooling pad but if you put some good fans on it, it blows a lot better than the stock fans and can be less noisier. If the stock fans die, you can replace the fan without having to buy a new cooling pad.
Or you can get a good noise cancelling headphone. -
Hi thanks for your replies.
Luis: I have the R4 with 680m car inside, temperature reaches max 66C checked with msi afterburner so its really not much. Just hoped it will lower the fans just a bit.
Yea I can see the idea in beeing able to replace the fans if needed, kinda in love with the cooler master u3 already
Okay edit: Im more in love with the NZXT after I saw a few reviews on youtube!

Seems like cooler master it is
