Can someone else confirm what the black levels are like on the RGBLED.

I'm loving the inky blacks on the G73 but I just miss the vibrancy of the colors on my SXPS RGBLED (which had awful grey blacks).

I'm also hoping and waiting for dual 5870's :)

Just to be clear you're talking about the 5870 right?

I can live without it in SLI mode until the bios can be updated, then just get a 2nd one, install and be super-silly-happy-joy-like.

But of course with my luck SLI config will only be available on a new revision and I'd be all major-bummered-sad-miserable-like.

I think what hes trying to say is SLI is for NVIDIA cards and Crossfire is for ATI cards.

The display is so bright that they seem quite white to me. They don't look like a dirty white color that I've seen on older matte displays if that's what you mean.

Hey guys, first time poster here. I'm planing on purchasing my M17x towards the end of the month. What I was wondering was the viability of using an external monitor setup. My job takes me on the road a lot and I would like to game, but at home I prefer to use my 23 inch monitor. Unfortunately, my desktop is old and slow. So I was planing on using my M17x as my main gaming machine along with my external monitor. Anyone else use this type of setup, and if so what are the pros and cons. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

sure you could do that, but if it's the main use of the machine why not buy a desktop ? it's cheaper.. plus you'd be loosing the awesomeness of the RGB LED screen that everybody here are talking about...

Believe me, I have been going back and forth on this. Laptop or Desktop? I came to the conclusion that I'm away almost as much as I'm home. So I decided to go with a laptop.

oh, so gaming on your 24" (or 23) is just a partial thingy, and you will be using it in other places ? Are you going to game on it when away ?
maybe it's worth going desktop + cheap(ish) laptop for the same price ?

I would go for M11X Netbook and buy a desktop at home. You would have two system faster then what a M17 would be.

the m11x is a cute little thingy, and it might go well with causal gaming while travelling.. you can also connect it to your external monitor when needed.. and a desktop will serve your gaming purposes...

The M17x works fine with an external monitor (you get 3 options for connectivity!)

Sorry no one above actually answered your question....

Why are you getting this if you've got a G73?

Regarding the poster wanting the M17x to use part time on an external monitor-that's just what I do with my laptop. I like only having to manage one system, and I like only having to BUY one system for that matter.

    I'll have both :)

I want to try an Alienware as I've never had one. Plus the RGBLED and dual 5870's (hopefully) will be an awesome combo.

What worries me though is that the M17x-R2 RGBLED will have the same traits as the SXPS RGBLED (bleedy backlight, grey blacks and low contrast).

Considering the supply issues with the 4870s, I am wondering now if they are holding off on a move to it. Some of the Nvidia folks are betting on the Fermi model, we'll see...

It doesn't have those issues. Blacks are uniform, fairly dark (for such a bright panel) and the contrast ratio is better than the sxps version.

That i know, but for windows to see the drives it needs to know the raid controller. Sometimes it detects it automatically, sometimes you need to give it a disk.... so the question is, will it detect it or will i need to give it a driver (and from where do i take it)

Mine's Elpida. Dell probably ships whatever's cheapest at the moment from one of their multiple suppliers. As long as the specs match.

Hey all, am very seriously looking at this beast but I am a little worried about the noise it makes. Watched this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YisvQNNhCXA

Sounds pretty loud on that. Is that video realistic? or did he put the mike next to the fans?

I realise it is hard to describe how loud something is, if it helps at all I did have a m1730, how does the M17x compare to that? I ask this because the main reason I want a laptop over a desktop is that I game on the couch next to my wife while she watches TV. I guess I'm wondering if she is going to have to turn the TV way up just to hear it over the laptop?

At full tilt you won't really notice the fans that much, you get used to the sound quickly. Trust me, it's not bad unless you are very sensitive to noise. I just like knowing my system is protected :D
