It's always what's available on the market.

It's most likely never the fastest available...

It's most likely the cheapest available...

    Quick Q,

Does the alienware m17x have a motorized eject? Or a poor, crap, poor manual pull eject?

buy ssd from ebay or any electronics store (you have may in US with very good prices). so i would recommend just buy the cheapest hdds from Dell for a start . as for gpus i have to get my 5870 CF spare parts to be fair.

1=3=Dual 5870 and if money is an issue single 5870 and upgrade later.
2 - 320/500gb single HDD from Dell + aftermarket SSD is the way to go.

Not sure if this is the place to ask, but I want to compare the throughput on my SDD to my HDD. What is a good tool to check the Read/Write speeds of hard drives. Something that will show sequential, random, etc? Any one have a link to a good tool that will do this on Windows 7 64-bit.

    Hello Fellows,

I want to ask you, after fully charging the battery of the M17X-R2, should I remove the battery inorder to increade it's timespan or should I keep it and disabling the battery from Fn+F2?

    Thanks

disabling the battery by Fn+F2 is good enough imho. Removing the battery is too much hassle, what if you want to move the laptop, what if electricity is interrupted.. what if .. what if ?

I got that error once when I booted from battery..

weird, but it booted up fine.

I disabled the Adapter error notification in the BIOS.

You should try, because I mean, who plugs the wrong adapters...?

@stimatisx, there's a thread discussing power adapter issues, you might want to take a look there if you haven't already...
But a power drain would remedy the problem i think.
    It's a bios thing....

+rep mfractal, I totally missed this one. I was only aware of the R1 issue...

If I disable the warning in the BIOS it's fine but I want to try the power drain as well and see if it stops.

    Thanks

Another thing I noticed is that when I enter the BIOS to make a change, after exiting the screen remains black and the GPU fans start spinning, I have to press the power button to turn it off and then press it again to power it on...

When you power it on hit F12 to get the boot menu and run diagnostics to see an error code is thrown. I had a similar issue with my R1, system failed to post. I captured an MB error code on the diagnostics run after the reboot.

Diagnostics were clean, unfortunately I get BSOD in windows as well and after I enter the BIOS and exit, the screen goes black but now I have to remove the AC and the battery to shut it down otherwise it stays like that. Something's not right here.

Absolutely man. Too bad Argentina and Germany are my all time favorite teams. I'll be rooting for Argentina though because I'm eager to see Maradona win the cup as a coach, after having it won as a player.

I was actually glad to see Brazil go home.

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming...

It seems that the 940XM I got is not a good one, only 4% OC through BIOS, at 5% with IntelBurn Test I crash... :(

    **EDIT**
It wasn't the CPU, I had to increase the memory voltage to 1.7V and now it is stable (but it throttles... 31 C ambient temp... no extra cooling)

I do not know if this is the case on the lynnfield parts (socket 1156 desktop and all laptop i7 stuff) but with the bloomfields (socket 1366) Intel highly recommends not going over 1.65 V since it can damage the integrated memory controller

    just a heads up

Thanks scook for the heads up, unfortunately I am aware of that... and I am more disappointed because I can't keep it stable without the 1.7V... (the values are 1.5 1.6 1.7 )

yeah, I don't understand why didn't they give 0.05V steps. Was it that hard?
anyways, I used the aircondition to drop the ambient temp by 2 degrees and now I am stable at 1.6V

Memory is picky about temps and being stable. Cooler always helps there - it is much more apparent with memory than anything else in my experience

Most individual applications don't need the full 4 GB. For benches try just using one stick so it is not getting the heat off the other

This is pissing me off, I need a working computer.

Not sure it's the case but there is a known issue with A05: if you disable wwan/Bluetooth/integrated LAN in the bios then the lappy won't post.
