good advice.

Thanks Widezu, I checked that and found it after checking the box (display all users). System Idle was 99 as you said, immediately under that was Apple Device Manager (I had just updated my iphone to iOS 5) at 13. I ended the process tree and now everything looks good on the CPU meter, idling at almost zero use. I had a feeling that could be a cause be figured since itunes didn't show as a process it wasn't it.
I will re-run Vantage now.
UPDATE:
That fixed it, my 2720 is now up to 19564, my overall stock score is 14399 with 280.26 drivers. GPU is 13234 stock clocks. -
Review Schenker XMG P701 PRO Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews
from this review, same video card 6990M with a weaker CPU and slower memory but has a better WEI in video as 7.7/7.7 comparing with mine as follows, i wonder what's the reason causing this. vbios difference? it seems that review machine has an older version of vbios.
-
I got a 7.8/7.8 with mine with an OC (830/1150). Also, my bclk is overclocked by 4.5% as well.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/att...lienware-m17x-benchmark-thread-part-4-wei.jpg
Are you running xmp hyperx ram? I'm only getting a 7.8 for that.
Edit: it's in your sig.. nevermind. -
Guys WEI is very unreliable. Don't rely on it for anything other than bragging.
-
never thought my name would be on the the legendary leader board
Oh well it's all thanks to the great effort done my all the members who helped putting together the 6990s in r2 installing guide. -
-
-
and wasnt that a stock run on his part?
-
Yup. Little upped on the cpu TDP but GPUs are undervolted.
-
thanks guys
and ya you are both right. they are stock and undervolted. maybe i should try some o'cing...this is getting fun hehe -
Hi All,
Just run some benchies on my M17 R3 2820QM / 580 GTX / 4go 1333 RAM
The results are not too bad, but not too good (from my point of view).
3dmark 2006 (580 GTX O/C @ 721/1556) : 21 757.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2820QM Processor,Alienware M17xR3 score: 21757 3DMarks
Vantage : 16 243 (stock clock)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2820QM Processor,Alienware M17xR3 score: P16243 3DMarks
I'll would take any piece of advice to go up my scores.
Thanks -
Ok this is REALLY embarressing as a former top 5 OC score holder, but it's been over a year since I last OC'd.... and I've completely forgotten how to OC. Someone remind me?

Here ya go.
Throttle Stop Guide
Also for CPU theres the SetFSB method.
Thats the basic tools.
Here are my (the) top 5870XF benchmarks. Just some marks to beat.

Both cards are on 700/1000 - http://twitpic.com/71qloo/full
And can I just say, 1 year ago you were 200 points.. now you're 2000 points ahead? Dayem... -
Don't remember if your vbios is the new one or not, probably is. But it can be found on the dell site, but you can edit your vbios GPU/mem clocks and reflash them to OC your GPUs.
Thanks, I pushed those cards really hard. Ran them at over 1GHz on the GPU core. Cooled them with dry ice.
Than later got a dice pot.

wPrime 1024M @ 4002.3 MHz: 192.72 sec
Been searching and coming across some of my more impressive benchmarksLast edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Ok um.. I need to get some Dry Ice Clearly.
Secondly, I've got bios flashed, and I'm looking at setfsb. Is it SetFSB OR Sapphire Trixx? What do you use? When I ran it back in the day I used, Furmark + that other benchmarking program (which doesn't work now anyways). -
damn! i remember those. and when searching the net...that first pic comes up...haha...i was wondering whos machine that was.
wow...the days of the 190+ sec wprime. i remember how hard it was to get those numbers!
@jubbing
it's both. setfsb and trixx for over clocking your gpus. -
HIGH SCORE
Hey look I managed to find my old high score
@johnksss
Did you mean you use both setfsb + trixx, or you can use both. -
Set FSB is for the CPU FSB. Trixx is for GPU OCing. If you try Dry Ice, Be extra extra careful. I personally wouldn't recommend it if your out of warranty. Unless your going to buy new cards. The thing is you need to make sure they stay dry. I havn't killed any cards yet, but it's definately easy to do if you let condensation build up on them.
Which pic came up? The one with the raw dry ice on it? Or the dice cup? I know I posted them over at overclockersforum.comThats awesome.
Yea it took a massive effort to achieve that. I chased sub 200sec 1024 runs for a while. -
Oh and I've still got over a year left of my warranty.. I got 3 years so it's good. I might think about upgrading to 6990's though, depending on how much I can sell the 5870's for. -
Lol, sometimes, Mostly I just wish it was a much less expensive hobby
I have a desktop Mobo and some CPU chips here as well as a Dice pot. I'm missing everything else needed to get this thing running.
Need a PSU, GPU, Monitor, memory ect. Not sure what else I would need. Been out of the desktop world since high school, which I graduated in 2000. Havn't had a desktop since

Is that your old 18x John?
Also, I never saw that pic of The Moos setup, but it's a lot like scooksThats awesome.
-
yes sir.
yes, it's a bit like scooks, but i think his is a flat lay freezer though.
Last edited by a moderator: May 5, 2015 -
My lord. That fridge setup is... What about condensation? How does one combat that?
Anyways booted up with 45x and things went iffy. So I went down to 43x. Got a Vantage of 28.8k CPU but the GPU score was down and the overall was under 20k so I didn't make a big deal of it. Tried 850/2000 on the GPU, crashed so 846 worked but GPU score was lower than my 20k run which was 843. 840 is rock solid all the time so I'll stick to that when doing high CPU runs.
Edit: I think I know why the GPU score was low. I had 3D enabled in the Control Panel even though I turn it off for games. So even though no 3D is rendered, it still goes through like a 3D check when it is running. Stupid. -
I was actually searching for a pic of scooks setup, looks like you beat me to it. Since Scook has the word "chest freezer" in his user title, it makes it impossible to find the right post
Everything comes up since every post has freezer in it

Ok questions.. in setfsb guide, step 3:
Change offset 00h to 29, click update and apply. Um. How?
Link - http://twitpic.com/71rib5 -
Thats a good question, I use the paid version, using the Asus G73 PLL. Which is the same one your using. But Abo just put it down as "Asus G73". Anyhow I never change the bytes manually since I paid for it.
You should be able to click it (byte) or somehow select it, and at the bottom where it says hex, or one of those boxes, change it and hit update, than hit apply.
I think that should work. -
It did not. lol
-
just received my Lovely Alienware M17x-R3
my very first run 3dmark vantage! nearly 17k
running 870/1200 clocked ati 6990m + i7 2820 (no overclocking and idk how to oc the cpu lol)
will this be any top 5 scorer? haha
I should have respasting the thermal paste before doing this lol
Uploaded with ImageShack.us -
Hit the PLL drop down, and select either Asus G73, or ICS9LPRS365BGLF. Then click Get FSB. Then it should bring up the bytes at the bottom.
I think you may not have the PLL selected. I can't remember how to manually do it since I havn't done that in over a year. Really though, throttle stop is the best way. I use SetFSB for fine tuning. You can use it to OC more than the bios 5%, but youd need to look at the pattern and change it in accordinance with the pattern. Don't remember what it was, but there were two specific bytes to change.
0F alternates between 18 and 98.
Offset changes for 10 from stock to 5%:
Stock: 31
1%: 32
2%: 33
3%: 33
4%: 34
5%: 34
Offset changes for 0F from stock to 5%:
Stock: D8
1%: 98
2% 18
3% 98
4% 18
5% 98
So if 10 is at 32, and 0F is at 18, changing 0F to 98 would up the FSB a tad. Than the next step up in FSB speed would be 10 at 33, and 0F at 18. Next step up would be keeping 10 at 33 and 0F going to 98.
So 10 can have two values with 0F 18 I believe is the lower value, aka lower FSB. For each number you put in 10, 0F will be either 18 (lower fsb speed) or 98 (higher fsb speed) You can chart it out and slowly make your way up the pattern.
I think I'm making sense... lol
@Len888, Make sure you have CPU-Z in the screen shot and GPU-Z. We need to have both CPU-Z and GPU-z to verifiy clocks and hardware. It's something I need to be more strict about.in the mean time I'm cutting some slack and putting it in the top 5.
-
may i know how do you guys overclocking the i7 sandy bridge cpu?
especially i7 2820qm -
@len888, In the bios you should be able to push the blck up. I've never messed with Sandy bridge, so I couldn't say for sure, but scrub the bios options.
@Jubbing, Your CPU is definately throttling. For your CPU, you may need to adjust your heat sink screws for proper tension. I normally do that by running maybe 70w TDP, and than having the keyboard pluged in but removed so it's off the system, and facing face down on the palmrest. Than I adjust the screws while watching the temps with Real Temp, and at the same time run wprime 1024 with 8 threads. The temps should level out as your stress the cpu. Once you have the temps steady and as low as possible, you can put the keyboard back on and increase TDP.
You may also consider installing newer AMD drivers. They give a good boost over those stock dell drivers. -
-
@DR650SE I've tried to install the new AMD drivers, but it just screws my system up. Last time I had to do a system restore because they wouldn't install properly (this is despite the fact I've gone into safe mode and used disk cleaner etc) (AND i've also just tried installing it over the the current ones but that still doesnt work).
Update: Also isn't higher TDP better for higher scores? -
@Jubbing Yea, assuming you can keep temps in check. More TDP= more power for turbo boost. But it also adds heat.
Hmm, have you tried the modded desktop drivers? I'm using the 11.9 betas at the moment, don't remember what I benched on though. Although before messing with them, I would create an image backup or use a seperate HDD, this way if something gets messed up, you don't mess with your standard everyday OS. I use a seperate SSD for benching, a 40GB Intel X-25V. I also create images of my everyday setup, so if I want to bench PCMark, I can wipte my SSDs, and bench with an SSD RAID 0 setup. When I'm done I just remimage my drives with my everyday OS.
@Len888 As long as your temps are not crazy, OCing won't increase your temps too much and you should be fine. It's increasing voltage and TDP that really adds heat. Blck, not near as much. -
Nice score BTW. -
on my 2720 and single 6970m im getting a 3d mark score of 12505 on performance mode gpu - 11182 and cpu 19379 si this right ? seems low
-
What program do you all use to control voltage on the 580m?
Thanks -
no such program....it's a flash and roll with it..sort of thing...speculation of course...
-
damn happy with the system + first run I scored top 4 in 3dmark vantage
hows your system doing?
Did you buy a brand new system?
looks like you're now using 580m haha -
@DR I'll try getting my aircon unit in first then we'll see.
As for drivers, not I gave up from the time the drivers wouldn't install. -
FINALLY I BROKE 3DMARK VANTAGE 17153
-
congratz!!
-
I am now trying to catching up inap's score
damn I have no experience trying any dry ice before.
He has 15c temp on idle lol -
Yeah inap's score is pretty hardcore for a 6990m. May no one beat mine hahahah!
-
but look at my updated new score
difference mine and his capped at 81 points lol
Need to do some repasting cpu and gpu from the dell stock paste haha
