LOL. I have no chance against the serious benchers. First Nvidia card in years, so I'm having to relearn how they work from scratch. Be a while before real overclocking begins. First item on the agenda is learning how to disable this Optimus business. Happy with the change from the 6990M so far.

Get in touch if you want. Happy to help. Bloody laptop won't boot @4.5Ghz but managed 4.4 so we'll see...

Get the modded bios I recently posted in another thread when I was helping a guy who wanted to disable optimus as well. I'll walk you through some other stuff too if you want.

What you gonna do with that 6990m? Perhaps stick it in your M15x and sell the 6970m? That way you are still keeping the 6990m for warranty's sake :)

Don't remember. Blue screen was way too quick. Plus I'm using 111 amps current and 85w TDP so I can sustain 4+ Ghz on all core for the duration of any benchmark. What settings do you use? Mine is probably a bit more hardcore than yours :D

I see your ram is 1600. Is it really running at that speed? I need XMP Profile 2 to achieve it but then I can't OC my BCLK much higher than 102. With the Default profile set, my BCLK can go to 106 but my memory with then be 1333Mhz. Mind posting a CPU-z image of the main screen and the memory tab? Thanks!

if it's not set in windows then use your camera phone to video the boot. then just play it back to see the code. you only need the first part of the bsod error code...
    something like

No! You beat me! Aaaaah time to get my game on!

3DMark 11 can get through higher clocks as the benches are really short and the GPU isn't pegged for long enough to crash :D Gonna get you Rev. I will get that 5k.

I saw very little increase in scores above 850, relatively little above 840. Your awesome CPU score may be drawing a little power away from the 580M, but those results show how little influence the CPU has on Mark11 scores. You're at 44x, I was at stock settings (32x), but the Combined Test is nearly identical; in fact, mine was very slightly higher. Sound like I know what I'm talking about when I'm a complete noobie here. In due course, I'll try again with a little CPU o/c'ing, but for the moment, you have regained the crown. You could have waited an hour or two to let me wallow in the short-lived glory. :)

Ah sorry man. I was scared that you may crank out another benchmark using an overclocked CPU and some crazy cooling. I panicked. You did have me on edge though :D

You make a good point about negligible differences in both in terms of CPU influence and anything higher than 850 core. I'm pleased about a 10k CPU score though :) I play BF3 using 810/900(1800) all other games work fine on stock. I haven't played Metro or Crysis 2 on this GPU so they probably need high overclocks. Are you using the vbios from my the throttling fix ver.2 in my sig?

Struggling with Vantage at the moment, but thought I'd post a placeholder until I figure out how to get the 580M's clocks up without crashing. May need to reinstall Vantage. Anyway, more later (I hope).

    3dMark Vantage -- P18,870 (2920xm/580M @ 800/925)

Now this was fun. The 580M/2920xm combo is formidable in 3dMark06. (PP was not disabled; double-checked Options menu and re-ran multiple times to confirm.) '06 may not have much relevance, but it's still fun, and DX9 is not completely dead.

    3dMark06 -- 25,832 (2920xm/580M @ 825/950)

Well, not sure. Once I go to 825/950, it crashes during the second test. And not where it usually does (near the very end), but odd places like entering the port for the fly-through of the ship. Dropped the 2920 down to 36x and still had the same problem. I've had these issues with Vantage before. Bound to be a conflict somewhere. Or, it could have just been tired. The Vantage runs came at the end of an extended session. Probably also wouldn't hurt to repaste.

These were with the new beta drivers; might be better off with the 285.62 set.

Nice scores, Rizzo. Regardless of the merits of the Tess-on vs. Tess-off arguments, most of the 3dMark 11 scores with AMD cards reported in the forum are with Tess-off. No reason for you to penalize yourself by doing otherwise, and that's what you'll be comparing your card against. But, props for full disclosure.

    confirm working 6970m on m17xR1 ! guys :D lolz
not expecting R1 to last this long?

it's a sapphire 6970m (174B-from clevo), here's the screenshot before & after install mobility mod driver for it.

The owner is Nyx, from our alienware club.

    update :

the GPU's fan getting some issues on m17x R1 bios, the fan's speed is too slow to do any benchmark.
even HWinfo64 can't take control of the fan.

later, he trying to flash the bios of 6970m Sapphire vendor into Dell 1028 vendor ... then got blackout in his area while flashing the vbios. =.="
The flashing went bad even tho' he had the battery inside the laptop.
The bios is currupted after this, bricked both new GPU and his laptop.

No the weird thing with the R2 is that is is compatible with many cards but suffer the full speed fan bug.

Eg: Dell 6970/6990m's work fine but force the fans on full whereas Clevo ones work perfectly. Newer Nvidia cards also force the fans on full regardless Dell or Clevo.

This is exactly the opposite in the M15x where eg the 460m GTX works perfectly but with fan issues in the M17x R2. The Dell 6970/6990m's work perfectly but Clevo ones cause the full speed fan bug. Very strange.

Heatsink contact and placement is fine, though the die takes up almost all of the contact area on the heatsink. As widezu alluded to, it's an issue with the r2's bios not fully recognizing the fan tables of the newer cards, so it will default at max fan speed.

I hope I could get sli to work before the new AMD cards come out...

    Updated :D

Nice job on the benches guys. Those R3 Sandy Bridge XMs are really shining. Especially in 3DMark06.

Your going to make me volt mod my CPU to 1.4v, and throw on the dice pot :p Though I don't think I could quite hit 25K. If only I had the time... :(

@svl7 We had this conversation before, but it slips my mind. I'll have to research out PMs later, but what is the stock voltage with the bios +150mV of the XM CPU? I know I ran the 540M at 1.4v but don't and it helped a bit, but since that chip was being FSB OCed, the system was limited by the PLL voltage. :(

What voltage was your 6sec wPrime 32M run at? Was it on dice?

Is it possible to run the CPU at 1.5v with the hard mod? If so I may pull out my old 920XM (ES) and risk frying that. This way I won't be limited by the PLL, and instead, can use the CPU voltage to boost the CPU multiplier. May make it more feasable to hit 25K on the R2. To prevent the system shutdown, I may be able to run it on a single GPU, as Crossfire doesn't add to much, but I can deal with that and test that when the time comes.
