nuts, absolutely nuts, crazy, Geo I bet you can approach 8k in 3dmark11 by fine tuning and driver support, this is really ridiculous.... congratz bro! :)

What's the total power draw of your system with those OC's and [email protected]?

And seriously....

...the wife came out and kicked my butt all the way to bed. Told me i was addicted and to get off the computer lol

    ANYWAYS,

Good...glad that GEO figured it out lol

MSI Afterburner with the limits removed is the only way right now to overclock these guys.

It seems that the upper limits of these cards is around 1ghz/1.4ghz @ stock voltage

AND one thing i've noticed is that unlike the 6990m where scores hardly improved if you overclocked the vram past 1100, on the 7970m, it really matters:

You really need to put the vram to 1350+...makes a huge difference in 3dmark scores

Awesome scores, GeoCakes! 57C max temp on the 7970M? High 80C's from the 2920xm at 44x? How are you cooling that R3 during benching? Direct AC? Amazing performance. How much power are you drawing at those overclocks?

    Wild, the 7970m runs cold.

At 1ghz/1.375ghz, my max gpu core temp is 70c after repeated 3dmark runs.

This is pure awesomeness. But as stated alittle earlier, why not run Furmark to really test stability? Is there any risks about it? Also how long would you run furmark to be sure the system is stable?

Again, rly awesome results. Sitting on a soon to be 5y old Precision M90, i rly can't wait to get this monster myself! :D In a clevo though ;)

i've run furmark several times and its very stable.

Here is a 4min run i just did for you. OC'ed at a comfortable 950/1325

Notice the 60fps avg on furmark...in a laptop?? You kiddin me?? :D

Furmark is apparently fine for the AMD cards, but the NV 580M's when overvolted can draw more power than the card can safely handle when running Furmark. There are some infared pictures of a 580M under extreme load here in the forum that show the VRAM/VR area glowing red hot, much hotter than the core, and that seems to be where the failures occur. There are also no temp sensors for the VRAM, so you can't monitor the problem area. There have been a number of 580M failures, usually when overvolted, among forum members. It's a complicated issue with less than complete data at the moment, but 580M owners are well advised to avoid Furmark when overvolted, or at all for that matter. NV calls it a power virus and builds in protection against it into some high end desktop cards, but that hasn't been incorporated into the mobile cards. I'm no expert on this issue, but better safe than sorry is prudent given recent experiences.

It all boils down to the paste job, when that is perfectly done and contact is flawless then setting the fans to 100% works wonders. A big book (prop the back up the laptop up) and max fans is all I use. :p

I had to use ICD7 on the CPU since it seems to excel at really high temps, by retaining its heat transfer for multiple benchmarks/much longer period of times than PK-1. I use PK-1 for the GPU since the GPU temps never exceed 70C, so it's always good there. However for the CPU, PK-1 seems to become worthless after a week/two or so of use.

At them clocks the CPU must draw about 80-90watts, GPU probs 100+ easy :p

I gotta give massive props to Slick for discovering the MSI Afterburner trick, so neat!

    This card looks unreal

^^ Geo! so you use ICD7 on CPU and it is better??? nice! I am getting one asap :) yeah PK-1 can take high temps for about a week, then when you remove the heatsink you see kinda evaporated stuff there..

    ENJOY!!!

Well...to be fair, lets see how long ICD holds out for. GEo has only had it on for less than a week.

I use ICD7 for the CPU also. MX-4 and PK-1 both break down very quickly when the 2920xm is pushed. I think I'm going to try a new CPU heatsink; something is preventing proper cooling.

Yup, I had to buy a new CPU heatsink. After 25 or so re-pastes I think I got it right (finally). Those are my record temps after all, other runs at them frequencies I went to 96C minimum... and now I can cool the CPU down to the 30s when max fans are on. Yay! :)

Amazing CPU temps. Mine run more in the 95-98C area at 42-44x. Need to refocus on CPU cooling. Thanks for your insight.

You can get ICD24. Exactly the same, except more of it -- 4.8 grams. Amazon.com: IC Diamond 24 Carat Thermal Compound - 4.8 gram: Computers & Accessories.

Graz'zt, the ICD stuff is very thick and is difficult to apply at room temperatures. Borrow a hair dryer and blow hot air across the tube to soften it up, and it will apply and spread much more easily.

or just put the bottom part of the tube into some hot water to soften it up

EDIT: put the tube of ICD into a ziplock, and zip it up. Then put that into a cup of hot water. This is the best way

No, because of the shape of the CPU, I use a grain of rice/short line method down the center and let the heatsink spread it.

    That'll work too.

I'm thinking of upgrading my 2720qm to an XM.Probably a 2920.Could someone give me some pointers on how to overclock? I've heard of Intel's Extreme Tuning utility and ThrottleStop.Would you use them together or one or the other? Also, what multipliers should I use when benchmarking 3d Vantage? Thanks in advance for any help you might offer.

The 7870M has GTX 570m/670m like performance and the 7770M is more towards GT 650M/GTX 660M like performance. That's pretty darn impressive given their TDP and the fact that 7870M consumes almost half as much power as the 670M

Have you tried lowering the memory while keeping the core @ 1000mhz?

BTW, awesome job with the overlocking to both of you. The 2nd week of May can't come soon enough...

This is a good idea, Just for the sake of chasing the desktop equivalent, keep the memory at 1200 and try and get 1Ghz on the core.

We need to see nvidia's offerings now. I have a whole catalogue of 3D films that will need to get shifted if the 680m doesn't perform up to scratch.

I'm confident we can do more than 1Ghz for benchmarks (not to mention another 100Mhz on the memory thanks to our Hynix chips), but I've personally found 970/1300 the sweet spot for Crysis 2. Completed a few more levels, very stable. Never thought I would completely max that game, is goood. :D

    Guys Look at this:
Test: Nvidia GeForce GTX 680 (Seite 14) - ComputerBase

    scroll down to Skyrim@1920*1080@4*ssaa

Nvidia GeForce GTX 580: 39,6 fps
AMD Radeon HD 7870: 50,00 fps
Nvidia GeForce GTX 590: 57,5 fps
AMD Radeon HD 7970: 59,7 fps

according to this 7970m can reach (overvolted) a real gtx 590 and a real desktop hd 7970 yeaah - wooow ;-)
in skyrim under these settings of course.
Skyrim is important for me so i picked this up :)

    and this:
Test: Nvidia GeForce GTX 680 (Seite 12) - ComputerBase
7970m can reach gtx 580 with stock volts
overvolted it will more or less reach a hd 7950
thats just..... no words can describe this this is just....

Yeah I will try an 11 run, but no promises. You want tessellation on or off...?

Widezu, 6 Flex is enough for 4.5 on 4 cores (for this bench anyway), and the standard 1k PriPlane.
