it looks that way...alienware have always restricted the nvidia cards for safety...last gen it was the power and temp throttles on 580m/675m...this year, we are still to find out what the deal is with the 680m's

Yes, thnx, it was a great vacation!! ok, widezu, we need you to figure this out and FAST...i have an opportunity to get a 680m cheap, but if i dont' get it, its gonna get sold lol...i'm not going to bother though if the nvidia throttle continues on alienware...so get out that coffee and GET TO WORK!! :) :D

I hope someone can get the Dell 680M to perform/OC just as well as the Clevo one's with a custom Vbios - that'd be sweet. :)

Just out of interest, how come? I was under the assumption that you were more than happy with the AMD card? Or is it down the the *potential* OC potential of the Dell 680M card?

i'm extremely happy with the 7970m...the best $$ i ever spent...it runs everything, and i mean everything. Gaming wise, there really is no difference between the 7970m and 680m. The only difference occurs when you run the crazy uber over 1ghz core OC we are seeing on the clevos...and even then, they can't run 1ghz core on games for very long. The OC drops to 880mhz, even on the Clevo cards

if i get a 680m, it will be purely to burn it out. Run benches, and more benches. For me it's a hobby...then i will sell the card.

There is no point holding onto it since top dog in video cards only lasts a few months...you have to sell the card while it still has value...7990m is on its way ;)

I just couldn't get on with the 7970M in the end...when it's running at 10 fps on The Walking Dead after trying every single remedy imaginable I just spoke to the elite branch of Dell customer care and told them I wanted a new machine with the 680M - and I got it. :)

Just hoping for a fantastic Vbios so I can do 24/7 big OCs as I intend to keep it for at least a year and have a big library to play. >.<

I want to get a new Porsche 911 Turbo so I can dyno test it all day. I'm not going to drive it, but just see what its maximum potential is in a simulated environment. Man, this is gonna be fun!

Slick will you be purchasing the Dell one or Clevo?

*If* a future modded Vbios allows it, do you think the 2gb card will be as OCable as the 4gb?

I am working on a some fixes with some other folk as well. The Dell cards are 2GB. Slick, you should get the 4GB one. I'll give you a vbios that will unleash it as currently it is only the 2GB one with the issue.

I'm very new to Vbios, IF the Dell one is fixable would it be capable of reaching the level Meaker got to? (Not that I need to get that high) I ask because before the cards were released people on the forum were saying that the 4GB cards were overkill and that 2GB would be more than capable.

We won't know for sure. 4GB is overkill in terms of memory storage but overclocking affects processing speed so they should be equal if not the 2GB one actually pulling ahead due to the different chips used.

I think Widezu is trying to make it work to achieve his desired OC on his R4.

There is another user BlakeE450 if I remember correctly is helping to make the 3D work on R3. Below are some of Blake's thread:

yoshomiamoto, maybe you can ask widezu for a vbios to unlock your 680m...it would be comforting to me that we can do that in the R3

    that is impressive for stock

Overclocking with anything other than bios A05 is difficult. Basically if you have a R3, or R4 with bios A04 or earlier you cannot overclock with the conventional methods. I'll do a write up on how to do it. It's not difficult and does not require flashing but is a bit more fiddly.

There was a guy within the 680M "Temp" thread (IIRC) who attempted to flash his Alienware (2GB) 680M who ran into problems, I saw it about a week ago so my memory is hazy. Is there no Vbios as yet which allows us to OC the 2GB 680M? It's fine, I'm in no rush to OC until it's all sorted and thorough anyway.

How can I tell which bios I have?

I finally managed to get the overclock working after playing around with Afterburner. I will post my 3DMark Vantage Results as I get them.

    Core Clock - 850 MHz / Memory Clock - 1500 MHz
    AMD Radeon HD 7970M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3610QM Processor,Alienware M17xR4 score: P21952 3DMarks

Core Clock - 950 MHz / Memory Clock -1500 MHz
    AMD Radeon HD 7970M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3610QM Processor,Alienware M17xR4 score: P23268 3DMarks

My maximum temperature so far has been 75 degrees so I'm very satisfied. I may do more tests later but I feel like I've pushed the overclock far enough.

I'm saying that if you have M17x R4 with A05 you can overclock your 2GB GTX 680m but any overclock will run into issues. If you have something that isn't a R4 with A05 ie R4 with A04 or lower, or M17x R3 then OC is a no go using the simple methods. I will show people how to do it later after I figure out what is wrong with the OC in the GTX 680m.

It started flaking out much over 950Mhz core clock, but I can probably get a good bit more out of the memory clock. I'll keep tinkering and see if I can get it dialed in.

What is the throttle point of the Dell card? I seem to have the odd slowdown on Batman: AA and GPU-Z shows temps no higher than 65oC. Other than that, the card is fantastic.

Strange to think that the Sager/Clevo card is utterly safely (for now) unlocked yet the Dell 680M is so locked-down. The card is utterly brilliant though - Batman:AA facing Scarecrow at 1080P with PhysX set to high and FXAA enabled with barely any slowdown is fantastic on a single card notebook - not breaking 65C in temps either.

Edit: Good luck Widezu, I'm more than sure you'll crack it eventually. :)

    Hi,

I wonder how do I get Windows Experience Index software to see my GTX 680M card? My system config on Alienware M17x R4: i7-3610QM, GTX 680M, 8GB RAM, 120GB Corsair Force GT SSD+500GB HDD, Killer wireless N. I am using the latest official driver from dell.co.uk website - 302.77, set the laptop to High Performance via battery icon.

    Edit:
Oh, silly me - I did not find the way to make WEI see my card, but simply disabled Intel HD4000 with Fun+F7 and got system re-assessed. GTX 680M scores 7.8, which looks about right for a mobile card.

Thanks for sharing and yes, the results of overvolted 680m's on clevos are quite impressive and the results have been shared on the video card and gaming forum here

I believe this is the record: with a 9k GPU score by nbr member 5150joker

    http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/4060655

So far, overclocking the 680m on the M17x has proven challenging.

what amazes me even more that it is a 15" laptop!

what is the average power consumption of a m17x with 680m on full load(cpu + gpu)? the adaptor is rated 240 watts, i am guessing 200 watts? how much headroom do we have for overclocking(considering thermal constraints)?

Edit: On the above post, the GPU memory size is 4GB? I guess its an aftermarket card, not the one from dell?

ya i realize that that was 3 months ago, but rumors are swirling...perhaps it is in conjunction to 680m being completely removed from alienware website.

Anyways, maybe it is nothing...here's hoping that 680m has been removed from the alienware website because of stock issues and nothing more

Hey guys maybe I can shed some light as to why the 680m disapeared on alienwares website, it is due to limited stock,

I ordered on the 2nd of august a M17x 3D 120hz 680m laptop, and around the 8th of august i was informed that alienware are out of stock of 680m's untill mid september!

Now just reading this cannot overclock nonsense I am sort of regretting purchasing it! Its annoying to purchase a gaming laptop, to only have it locked down! Ah well...

I hope when it arrives it changes my mind! Ill post some pics and benches when i do :)

    Thanks guys

Definitely limited stock. The 680M has been wildly successful and the sales outpaced what was expected. The 680M will reappear as a configuration option as soon as they actually have them to sell.

Hey guys, any idea what happened to our friend, The Revelator? I miss seeing him here in the Community. His last log-in was a bit more than a month ago. I hope he is OK.
