That seems with the stock vbios? Is that correct? Max core OC (+135) and +275 memory. That is way too nice! Great score!

Got some benches on the M17 after the 2920 install and OC to 4.0Ghz. Also OC'd the 6990 to 815/1000.

Throttled on Vantage but still scored pretty high, other runs didn't appear to throttle.

    3DMark06: 24149

    3DMark11: 3988

    3DMarkVantage: 16271

Got a 4054 on 3DMark11 with 4.2 on the Proc and 820/1100 on the GPU. Don't think I'm going to push for more, just happy I broke the 4k mark.

Found out that the proc was throttling due to lack of voltage in the above 4.2 run, fixed that and will run the 3d tests again this evening when I have personal internet available again. Did get to do a wprime 1.55 64m run @ 4.4 and got a 5.76.

Thanks to Mr. Fox for the willingness to help and answering of countless questions!

Ok. So I started living on the dangerous side due to Borderlands 2 not getting enough CPU to push PhysX during 4 player games. Not sure how much it will actually help but I did the bottlecap lift for cooling on it. I did not repaste. Temps maxed out at 91C during testing and Intel XTU 5 minute stress test. Turbo is set at 41/40/39/39 with normal Level 1 settings (I think the processor gets a little more juice or something).

The Vantage score seems to me a little low - you should have broked 17K at that values ( I didn't test the others so intensively only on stock clocks and my 2670Q / 6990 stock is not far behind (compared with your 4K cpu + 6990 oc) what RAM do you use and most important what vdrivers - :)

V-Drivers are stock Dell, got tired of fighting to get anything newer installed after the card vanished on me the last time. Have 12gb of Ram, 8 is Kingston Hyper-x 1600 and 4 is stock nanya 1600. Since those runs I've learned a little more from Johnksss on why I was throttling and think it's fixed now, I just haven't brought the computer back to the room to test it again.

Are there any decent benchmark tests that don't require an internet connection to see your scores? Unless I'm missing a setting in all of them, every 3DMark requires one.

Thanks I'll look for them tonight.

I took the 17 back to the room now that the throttling issue is fixed, think Vantage was around a 16,500 or so but definitely not 17. Will have to look online tonight and see if it saved my scores.

    Got a 24,900 3d06 score and just over 4100 on 3d11 with a 4.2GHz oc and the 6990 at 815 / 1100.

Pretty sure I'm not going to get it any higher until I get home and can get some IC Diamond and a cooler environment.

Not sure I'd get my money's worth, especially if it's tied to the computer it's installed on when purchased. If it came with a disc and I knew it would transfer I'd probably pick it up.

Nope. it's tied to your 3dmark.com account and can be installed on as many machines as you like, but only your account will accept the serial number when you submit a score.

That's a bit low on the GPU score. With my stock 680m I get about 63xx-64xx GPU score. Both my Dell and Clevo cards score that at stock clocks.
Looking at you second screen shot it's clear you are encountering the throttle issue the Dell cards are plagued with.

    thanks for you reply.
even i felt that something was weird with my 680m
then i brought my clocks back to stock and scored P6280! REALLY WIERD!
and then i only increased the clocks on shader to max +135 (memory +0) and scored a P6434
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3720QM Processor,Alienware M17xR4 score: P6434 3DMarks

in the first benchmark, i had also increased the clocks on memory to +603, i think that that might be causing me some problems(dont know how?)
the highest temps i get after running battlefield 3 for almost 2 hours is 72C
i have other people getting upto 85-90C on their graphic card(which they say is normal/safe)
    is this a throttling issue?

The throttling isn't because of temperature in the Dell 680m. The vbios throttles the card when the memory is overclocked and or when the core is overclocked past a certain point. (75 mhz over stock for me)
So yes, you were experiencing throttling.

I have a Clevo 680m as well as my Dell 680m. I'm using a custom vbios with voltage maxed and with my stock clock set at above 900mhz.
With those scores I was clocked at 1057/2400. That seems to be my max. The temps never went above 68* C with the fans on max.

Is there any way to prevent the throttling on the dell 680m?

Looking at your test, You throttle in test one. That's why your score is low. Try a lower core over clock first. That score should almost be matching test 2.

so, i have experimenting with clock speeds all night and here is my conclusion.
increasing the memory clock, lowers the performance no matter what the shader clock is.
the max score i got was P6471 with shader +120 and memory +0
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3720QM Processor,Alienware M17xR4 score: P6471 3DMarks
    Max Temp - 69C

anything else gives a lower score.

will overclocking my cpu help the score? (i7-3720QM)

so that means my graphic card is throttling and there is no way i can bypass it?

As of this moment there is no way of getting past the throttling on the Dell 680m.
That's why I purchased a Clevo 680m. Overclocking the CPU will increase your overall score, but will have no effect on the GPU score.

Really sad, thanks for the info though.
I found a lots of vbioses on the internet for the clevo and msi laptops with 680m.
too bad the 680m cant be used to its full potential in alienware laptops.
nevertheless, i can still play all games at ultra without overclocking! :D
thanks again for the info, your help is appreciated :)

thank you very much for your dedication! :D

and also i have a query,
    in gpuz
    Screenshot by Lightshot
mine shows a boost clock which is a bit higher than the set clock
in your screenshot, it is the same. can the gpu boost be disabled?(not that i want to!)
and my pixel fillrate, texture fillrate and bandwidth is lesser than yours.
my bus interface keep fluctuating from 3.0 to 2.0 to 1.1 back and forth, should i be worried?
is your result due to your modified bios?

Some what...more due to the user though....But you need the right tools to start with.

Even that vbios you are using...you keep trying to start off in outer space on clocks. :D Just start lower. Like 95+ on core and see if you can get test 1 and 2 to match. Until you figure that out, your scores will never go up my friend.

It's not only the cooling. They have access to the best quality cards. For us, it's dumb luck if we get an amazing card.

Can someone tell me why its so hard for modders to figure out why the dell card throttles so bad at high clicks? Don't mean this in an arrogant way, just curious to why clevo cards were so ez to do and dell cards seem to be a head ache.

Lol john. But for modders that Prolly looks like a normal sentence. :) I get why it can be crazy in the coding aspect I was more talkin about just the odd disparity between cards and the code. But I don't truly know enough to even fathom all that for a into it.
