I know I'm late to this party but I had 3DMark 11 downloaded for a while, just didn't have the time to run it :D

    With a Core i7 3740QM and 680m, both completely stock, I got a score of P6480.

This is with the most recent WHQL nvidia drivers.

I ran firestrike and scored only 3800ish WITH OC. Why is that? I have a 680m as well. Is it because I use older drivers?

depending on how old they actually are, that could really be the culprit :)

if its really cuz of the cpu it should be waaay slower than the slowest quad (like a dualcore), since firestrike is pretty cpu-independent.

photo, is that a desktop CPU you use?

I just ran 3d mark 11 on my R4 and got p2800 or something on the basic version, thats with unapproved new drivers.

    not so impressive.

Did you even look at the specs and the pictures???...920xm and 940xm cpu's are identified as desktop processors.
Why would i post desktop numbers on a notebook forum.....

p2800 is indeed a horrible score for any high end laptop...
    Good luck with your benchmarks.

so 3d mark used my intel graphics, .

can someone fill me in as i am way behind the times with this stuff, can you not force 3d mark to use the gpu...

putting a desktop CPU into a mobile platform is impossible, its news to me, two entirely different things.

this is a thread on the alienware laptops, there is a different forum, several i am sure for desktop variants.

Okay, so this thread has somewhat blown me away.

I have a 3 year old M17xR2. I got it with a single 4870, 4gb of ram, etc. I upgraded it to 8gb almost immiediately (for a fraction of the price dell wanted for 8gb), and later got a 2nd 4870 and went crossfire, and more recently got an SSD, too.

I was looking at maybe getting a cheap 5870 and via some googling I found this page and was blown away when I found this thread and discovered I can put in a 6970 or 6990.

There's plenty of these cards on ebay. So can I seriously just buy one of the 6970M's or 6990M's listed and - after swapping the heatsink over to the new card - fire it up in my aging M17xR2? :O !!!!

Is it really that simple? Am I missing something here? Tell me before I hit buy it now on some ebay auctions!

Also how much of a performance boost should I expect going from a 4870 (crossfire or single) to 6970 or 6990?

why not go all out and put a 7970M into ur machine? :p

u can very well expect double the performance from a 4870 to a 6990M and about triple the perf. when jumping to a 7970M :)

How difficult is it to get a 7970M? I haven't seen any for sale. How difficult is it to get it to work in the r2? And how much is it? O_O

check with resellers like mythlogic & rjtech for example. the latter has separate offers online on their website for complete upgrade kits. gotta check with them for heatsink compatibility for ur machine tho. pricing would be around 400-500 bucks, depending on the source.

yea overvolted to 1.025v and i havent hit over 80 on temp yet at all, when i run 3dmark 11 im somewhere around 75 so theres plenty of room to explore i think. Ill be flashing to 1.05 v sometime soon to see how far i can really push this card but the results so far are very encouraging. Saying this though, im only benchmarking this hard coz my laptops still under warrantee so if it blows then i can get a replacement fairly easily. But like i said the overclocks quite stable at 1050 core clock 2300 mem clock

General question. As next gen is coming out soon, does the forum want me to get a 3940XM and tinker a bit and see if we can keep up with Haswell like I did with the 2920XM for the R3? I reached 4.7Ghz on the last one. I haven't really been benching or doing any foruming lately and I want to get back into the game.

    Hey long,

Good news indeed for the M17x R3 users. Alienware systems just pure awesome for future GPU support. Just keep going and going and going lol.

Jaybee Champ theres a little more info over here for now.
Alienware M18x R1 running a Nvidia GTX 780M - Let the testing begin
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...unning-nvidia-gtx-780m-let-testing-begin.html
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...-upgrading-you-gtx-780m-review-inside-30.html

Yup it needs the driver inf to be modded to install the driver. Hopefully support from newer drivers is automatic and heaps better. ;) However if not no worries modding the INF is still okay. It's pretty awesome that the GPU works in the system to begin with.

I hope to do some more testing on the M17x R3 in the coming days.

    Cheers. :)

I dunno, probably because of a my CPU, OS tweaks and stuff like that.
I've also been an overclocker for like...years.
    I know what I'm doing.
I tweaked the OS, and I use the standard WHQL drivers and my experience.
Oh yeah Im running 1866mhz RAM in 12GB Dual Channel(2x4gb 2x2gb 6gb perchannel). So my ram and processor microctransfer right is significantly higher than yours.

Also stop using freaking image shack, they are awful
go use imgur or tinypic, or photobucket. seriously image shack is garbage, everyone needs to abandon them ASAP.
