Yea, that looks about right. To me, the 920XM on the stock runs I'm doing now is getting about high 18K and 940XM is in the low 19K range. Others are saying A08 only effects the 920/940, but you might want to flash to A07 and see if the numbers change. I'd be curious to know that
-
Just shows you what reseating the heatsink and a nice application of thermal paste can do. Temps are now 78C and 77C respectively after a good amount of time at full load. The slightly cooler of the two is the card that was previously 20 degrees hotter!
-
Never mind, I had Andriod confused with another member having heat issues dispite disassembling the system a million times.
-
did you get started yet?

dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Lol. thats all you keep asking him. i saw you got a g73 congrats
-
thanks.
well, because we all bench on the same team now..
using the same benchmarks. so now we can tell what the cpus are cable of in stead of just running 3dmark06 and vantage all day long...lol they now have a dx9/dx11 preset heaven bench to run as well. other than us...no one else is running that as well. -
Flashed back to A07, ran 3dmark06 and results were the same got 15,563. So A08 doesnt seem to affect 820qm processors. I noticed in another post you wrote that your 940xm ES doesnt seem to perform as strong as your 920xm. I was looking at upgrading to a 940xm and ebay is the only place i can seem to get one from and they are all ES type. I am from AUS and no here carries mobile processors. Do you know anywhere I can get a 940xm OEM or boxed final production one ?
-
Thanks for the link. Im really wanting a 940xm OEM, if anyone knows where to get one from please let me know. Thanks.
-
TurbodTalon Notebook Virtuoso
Sean50, there is no reason not to run a 940XM ES CPU. I've owned more ES\QS CPUs than OEM, and none have them have ever failed to perform flawlessly. Unless you hate money. You'd have to slap the old CPU back in for Alienware to honor their warranty anyhow.
-
nothing wrong with high end es chips
nothing wrong with a 920xm since the only thing the 940xm has is an extra multiplier.
unless of course your looking for signature bragging rights or something?
or
a dedicated over clocker and benchmarker. -
I'll sell you mine for $700. Seriously, PM me.
Edit: nevermind, noticed you said OEM. Mine's an ES. -
and there you go. a freshly tested 940xm. oem!
so look no further. -
I got this score with no prep work, and no restart for three days, I guess not to shabby
. Since I do not bench Mark that much, is this good for my system? I will rerun with a fresh restart.
Using 3DMARK VANTAGE Advanced Ed. 1.0.1 1280 x 1084 (5:4) Performance setting
P12181 3DMarks
CPU Score 9654
Graphics Score 13345
Fresh restart:
P12355 3DMarks
CPU Score 9719
Graphics Score 13551 -
looks good to me flynnaz

Seems normal for stock's.

just upgraded to a i7-640m last night successfully, it worked with the A06 bios but i kept getting a post error saying "no microcode enabled for alternate processor", so i updated to A07 and the error stopped. it hovers around 3.35ghz with both cores running, which is a decent improvement over the 540m's 2.9ish clock with two scores enabled.
the Over clocking of the cpu is a little more limited in terms of how far you can push it without having some help with voltage. here is a cpu Screen shot:
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1386144
this BCLK will stay stable for about 20 mins under a light load , but if you push it to do multiple task in a short amount of time, it will BSOD, i can get decent stability ( ran orthos for 30m mins) with a 154 bclk, however. the temps of the CPU sit right @ 41c, but i think i did a poor job of applying my last bit of AS5, so ill get some more or change to a different type ill report any changes. stock 3d06 scores went up a decent clip with an average of 15200 over 10 runs with a high of
15874. this is a decent improvement over the 13580 average of the i5-540m
vantage scores were not affected at stock over my 540m. the cpu score seemed to stay the same @ right around 8K, which is kind of disappointing, but i will do some more tests later
EDIT was able to run a few more benches, my avg. cpu score stock in vantage is 9200. so a fair increase @ stock. -

go for 20k now

lol im chicken, im afraid to kill these cards since i fried the the first batch, but i know that its only a matter of time before i feel the need to surpass 2ok...maybe later tonight =P

Hi and thanks a lot for this program
I would like know if its possible to modifie the windows timer for it Take into account the ratio QPC/GTC, like that fraps would be read the good fps
Sorry for my english, thanks ! -
No i'm just wanting to upgrade to the fastest processor possible for maximum performance. What exactly is the difference between a ES/QS vs an OEM anyone know ?
-
wow, i thought you had an oem
and
700 bucks!
oem = warranty
es = no warranty and some sensors may or may not work.
es/qs = no warranty and is generally the finished product without all the intel markings. inside and out. -
nothing really. some ES chips are lacking in certain features, such as thermal sensors, and at times they have unlocked multipliers, but 99% of the time they are identical to the "OEM" counterpart. some people swear by OEM, but in reality there is no difference, i have gone through aprox. 30 ES/QS chips and the only issue that i have ever had was Bios compatibility on lower end machines. personally i prefer to use ES chips due the lower price. no sense in paying $400 for a chip you can get for $200 imo. the only other issue is supposedly they are "Intel Property" and the public isn't supposed to have them, but if Intel really cared, the wouldn't be on the market would they?
EDIT: and what John said, except the warranty only applies usually if you have the machine the chip came with , Intel doesn't support OEM warranty they always refer to the manufacturer of the notebook/desktop. "Retail" carries a 3 year warranty. -
yes. and in my case. that would be me.
so all my oem's are under warranty. -
Thanks to cleverpseudonym I now have a i5 540M on the way to add to my CPU collection. And on that note, my CPU-Z 520M record just got stomped on hwbot
I doubt there is much I can do about that one. I gotta figure out what kinda board that guy is running. Apparently he can play with voltages. Is there a desktop board that is compatible with the socket 988 mobil CPUs?
-
will a 620 work in there?
he is using an msi 1727 with pll pin mod
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1384953 -
so what's the highest frequency achieved so far with the 940XM? any CPU-Z validation ?
-
It's up to the programmer of fraps and other benchmarking tools to fix this problem. It's a long time bug in Windows but it's up to individual programmers to test for this problem and to correct for this timing bug.

Having ES chips is not a great strategy though. At work we have had them from a guy who sold an es advertised as an oem. Intel actually sent someone to our office to repo the chip. We obviously had no choice and could do nothing about it.
When they do decide to collect them, you do not want to be the one with the chip as it is like losing at musical chairs really -
yeah in a business setting its likely a problem waiting to happen if you have them in quantities, but i would love for Intel to show up at my house and try and get the CPU out of my m17x. even more so i would love for them to file a lawsuit against me for the $250 chip.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
They would not need a lawsuit. They can just show up with a court order and the sheriff. And they will sieze what is theirs and attempting to stop them will get you arrested
-
How did Intel find out your office had them? Did the guy selling them as OEM confess? -
hey dr650se. seems i was wrong the first go round...check out the 620 now...
CPU-Z Validator 3.1 -
Very nice
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
They must have seized his records to find the customers that had them. -
Gah I think I've messed up something, my comp keeps BSOD when I raise (in rivatuner) the clocks higher than 800/1100. It's weird. I tried to furmark trick but that just crashed the cards. Clearly I've messed up the rivatuner enteries.
-
Wow, nice one john! Have you seen the new i5 520M record? The guy volt modded and pin modded his board, abotu the same speed as that 620M. Crazy. But nice job on that, I need to get the 720 benched. It's sitting in the computer, but I havn't put my SSD in, been lazy after testing for the A08 bios
-
4.108 ghz
CPU-Z Validator 3.1
yeah, i was reading that. pretty damn nice indeed.
you only need the ssd for pcmark 04/05 and vantage.
the rest is all gpu and cpu. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I see you are also rocking the HyperX John?
-
thats a big 10/4 negative.
our ram down clocks...
although, ty_ger07 just bought some 1600 mhz ram for his laptop...so we shall see what happens in a few weeks. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
What you using then? In your link it looks like it is SOME kingston 1333 ram lol
If you boot that ram at 1066 then clock it up in windows, you can do cas 6 @ 1333
(I just can't do that in my machine
)
-
i can't do that in here..YET, but im seriously working on it. the 620m is 800/1066 and is not 1333. so it uses jedec #3 533 clocks...which are 7-7-7-20
i can probably run 7-6-5-15 if i try, but no need to right now. im the only 620m..lol...well, there was some other guy clocked at 3.960 ghz or something, but i knocked him off.
edit:
that brings me back to the mx17 r2...that lower cpu should work dr650se. try it with only 2 or 4 gigs of ram next time. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Ewww....7-7-7 @ 533....get some REAL ram John
Try the HyperX 1066 Cas 5 or the 1333 Cas 7 stuff
(non XMP flavors)

I know Mandrake had both and tested them thoroughly - ask him which he preferred. I have only used the 1333. -
real ram huh...ill do that when people beat this old shot out ram first...lmao.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Just remember,
"if you aint first, your last!" -
very good call!!
good thing im first!
question...what is the highest over clocked hyperx ram here on the forums?
for 1066 and 1333 -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Good question. I know mine flakes out around 1400-1420 at 7-7-7 and stock volts. Have not really tested it much as I always prefer keeping the FSB:RAM at 1:2 (supposed to be "optimal")
Mandrake was able to run his 1066 at 1333 I think. -
grrrrrrrrrrrr!
i keep looking at that ram...hahaha -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
It is even shiny. That made it a no brainer for me
