So i wanted to test the benchmark in GTA IV. So today i finaly baught the game.. After watching the clips on youtube by Geekdotcom who got 39 fps..
I have same settings in game and benchmark here we go........ So my result was 37 fps. CPU 37%. Video 41%. Ok, i was thinking and i tested the game.... It playes like crap. 2- 25 fps in all settings, and like mafia 2, AA doesnt work as it should.. This is why i dont like to spend money on pc-games because you dont know if they are going to work... Have anybody tested this game and got better performace out of it.. I know that i only got the 720 cpu but it cant do that much...

That game is very cpu and vram limited. Having only 1gb or vram will keep you from even being able to enable high levels of AA and graphic detail.
-
That game has a lot of bugs and needs a lot of patching. Last time i remember there was heaps of patches and tweaks you could install and try out.
Try install all the updates and patches 1st if you haven't already then there should be some tweaks to make it run better.
Unlocking the texture ram usage was one of the big ones as well.
Cheers. -
Aha.... Thats a bummer...
I just hoped that it could be the driver because the game crashes almost directly..
Do you know somewere to buy a better cpu. Heard someone say ebay had good prices on 920 processors.. Is that safe, and are they ok?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Before buying a new cpu, look into the stuff that Reborn mentioned.
-
i just ran a bunch of test that pretty much said the i7-620 was a bit better than a 720...go figure.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I suspected that a while ago. I forgot who it was, but someone set the i7 720qm to run 2 cores and it was clocked at 2.8 all the time. Made me think, the 32nm 620m might be better
since it will have more thermal and power wiggle room
Guess they cost the same for a reason lol -
i got a 640m and it runs @ 820 like numbers with 2 cores. it was relativity cheap as well
-
So I ran Furmark v1.8 for 20 min to stress the GPUs:
Stabilty test with post fx enabled
1280x1024
No MSAA
No issues. Am I good? -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Now try it at 1920x1200 with max MSAA
The MSAA is important as it will get a worst case temperature for the vram, which has iffy cooling from Dell -
Playing BFBC2 at max setting for hours doesn't even get my temps as hot as that Furmark test lol. Its just very un-realistic...
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
That is why I called it a worst case scenario haha - of course games wont get it that hot. Crysis is the only one that comes close and it is cooler than furmark lol
-
but do you think the test that I ran is a good indiciation that my GPUs are good to go Scook? I am sometimes a worrysome fellow...
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
If they did not throw any errors I would say you are safe
-
Woot! I had no errors or artifacts!
Cheers

Hi all, i have run 3DMark06 and here is the score, does this seem right?
3DMark Score 15237 3DMarks
SM 2.0 Score 6606
SM 3.0 Score 7854
CPU Score 3225
OS Windows 7
CPU Intel Core i7-620M Processor
CPU Speed 2660
GPU 2x ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870
Memory 4096 MB -
yeah it seems fine
-
Just got my M17x R2 from the outlet with i7-820/4MB Memory/Dual 5870s. Ran 3DMark06 and got around 15.7K. Does this seem low for a i7-820/Dual 5870 system? I am seeing lot higher results on this thread for lower processors and Dual 4870s.

for stock your numbers are spot on.

Hey... Ive been thinking of flashing my gpu so i can oc it. Amd gpu tool just give me bsod over 750/ 1050
but gives me 5 fps more in bc2..
So just wants to see what a real oc can give me.. When you get a copy of your gpu bios how do you do that.. In my bios i have no option on my gpu. And also if something goes horrible wrong and lets say i dont have a copy of my gpu bios can i use dells beta v-bios and that could work also.. Im a total noob in this area of flashing things. I dont want to break my dear laptop
-
Anyone have this issue before? I'm working to OC the 720M CPU via SetFSB. I'm updating the registers and applying, but the new settings are not working. I did so when I first fired up my benching SSD and crashed, now the new registers won't take. Any ideas?
-
As i wrote in my last post im a noob in all this but also i have tried SetFsb an it was a no go.. I think someone have maneged to get it to work.. Hmm.... If i only could remember where ive seen this???
-
Well SetFSB Definately works, I've used it all the time. But issues have just cropped up for me so I'm trying to work them out. You probably saw it here
http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/495203-how-oc-m17x-r2s-920xm-940xm-using-setfsb.html -
what version of fsb are you using?
and when it starts acting stupid...i usually just do a complete shut down. pull power and battery, then turn it back on...his usually clears that problem when it happens...usually. -
Same one I used to OC my 520M. 2.3.148.114
But I also just tried 2.3.151.117 and got the same result. It's odd because when I initialy booted up and ran SetFSB and cranked it up, it worked, then crashed, now nothing. apply-->update results in it reverting back to stock registers. -
i lost like 2 to 3 mhz when i changed my os to windows 7 professional. i was like...wht!
my version is 1.50
and what happens if you only move like 3 mhz and hit setfsb? -
Older version freezes, newer version does nothing, reverts back. I'm baffled because it worked the very frist time, and nothing has changed. Hmm. Going to roll back a bios version.

Anyone had problems with Aquamark where it does the whole run and crashes when generating the score? I can't get it to finish on my M17x
-
ok.
it still sounds like you did not replace the original direcpll.dll with the new one. or this one.Attached Files:
-
-
Does that file go in the SetFSB folder? Blah, I just installed my regular SSD. I'm going to see if I can get SetFSB working on my standard SSD.
Hmm, I'm going to send Abo an email, I have a feeling my activation code may not be good anymore. I don't see any reason it shouldn't work
-
that file was for scook and aquamark.
if your activation wasnt good..you would not be able to hit setfsb. -
Ahh, gotcha, i'll delete the file the
Hmm it should be good, but I got an error trying to run it from my SSD. But when the SSD was in, the Set FSB button was available, but it still did nothing or froze the computer. -
did you try only try like..from 142 to 147 then hit setfsb?
-
Well traditionally I used only the registers. All I had to do was to take one from 31 to 33 or where ever I wanted and then hit update, then apply.
-
oh yeah, that's right. there isnt any direct slider control.
-
Yup, and I wouldn't think it's possible that it's related to the CPU change. Maybe I'll put in the 920XM in a few days. I need to run some 5870 benches anyhow.
-
well...the cpu should still work....try resting the bios to factory default, then see if it will take the change.
i need to get me a 920xm as well. -
Hmm well I went from A08 to A07 and it didn't work, so I tried A06 which I benched everything else on and nada. Hopefully you can get a strong chip. My 920XM holds a load better then the 940XM ES does. Not sure it's an ES OEM thing, maybe it could be, but my 920XM is definately a good chip. If I could up voltage more on it, I could really put down some great figures. When I get home I'll work on a dice set up. Then thermal throttling will be one less concern. Although the PSU is my main drawback. I've done runs clocked up to 950/1276, for 18811 (Vantage) on the GPU. Any increase in CPU though, caused a PSU trip.
-
what is your highest stable cpu over clock on either chip?
-
For benchmarking like vantage or wprime? Wprim 1024 was run at 3.786GHz for the 920XM and 940XM, but the time for the 920 was almost 20sec faster.
Superpi32M was able to run at 3.933 for the 940xm and 3.931GHz for the 920XM so about the same. The time on both was within two sec of each other but the 920 was faster. For Vantage my 920XM was at 3.647GHz, and havn't put much time in it with the 940XM ES since it would drop the OP/SEC a lot more then the 920 leading to lower scores. It's as if the 940 can't quite keep up or hang at top speed like the 920 can.
You can see the pattern here at all stock settings when I was testing both for erawneila regarding the A08 BIOS. A08 Testing
Stable everyday use I'd use around 3.7 GHz maybe. Maybe lower, 3.9GHz wasn't too stable, but stable enough. -
interesting...
and this is the same for others with the 940xm as well? -
That I can't confirm. I havn't been able to see any other data. I want to get an OEM 940 to try it out too. maybe it's an PEM ES differance.

Hey again. As i wrote some pages back i want to flash my gpu and i folowed the steps downloaded HP usb disk, bootme, ati flash and RBE 122.
But im very careful so my questions are. Ive done and tested the usb stick. Restarted, changed to usb first in bios and it works. But when i open the usb stick i cant see the 3 files that should be there. Probably hidden, but even if i click "show hidden files" i still cant see them. And then i want to make a copy of my gpu bios but i cant understand how? Will this be an opition when i continue with the usb start because i restarted when i saw it started ok. Im stil a noob in this area and i dont want to rush in to anything if something happens and i dont know what to do. Hope for some answers.. Thanks, noob -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I used the exact same files for AM3 in my desktop, asus, and M17x John
Only seeing the problem on the M17x, and I already tried reinstalling the program -
lets do a file match. for the aquamark folder.
also, did you replace the aquamark.exe file with the revised version as well?Attached Files:

This may be a silly question but, but I ran some bench marks this afternoon after my comp has been on and used for a good 48 hours and my scores were about 2k less than normal... Is this usual suspects ie everything's warm bs a cold run of the be benchys or did I f*ck up somewhere....
-
Avast Matey! If ye do em push-ups and stop for 2 months, will ye do same good, ye scallywag?! By the Sea Devil - no! Ye should drink more rum, lad!

i think you are verifying my concern and agree that i should run it again after i let my beast rest

Aye! Ye shall become a pirate some day, lad! If yer throat survives that long, yo ho!
