I did not realize I am up to #6 on the team lol

Guess I have to keep going up then! After finishing off the M17x (4870s, GTX 280m, maybe GTX 260m, Q9000, QX9300) I should be over 200 points :)

Hey guys! Does anyone know a reliable eBay seller for 920XM OEM?
I see some crazy low pricing, like 300$. WTH?

It says it's a QS. It seems like even these have halved in price. I remember ~$600 i7-920XM ES CPUs when I was considering one.

But if you check other sellers, the prices are very close: 400-450$ mostly.
    550-600$ for the 940XM. That's why I'm so confused.

hey pick up the xm chip i got it for a little lower than the $380 since i paid shirley direct via paypal and got a nice deal. I have the 920xm ES chip and look at the performance of this little sucker 27x multiplier stable.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/att...lier-manipulation-xm-processors-27-stable.jpg

edit: I hate you guys and your Bios OC capabilities and voltage modding along with setfsb...us m15x owners are crippled and i know you guys can hit 4.0hghz on this sucker. I might have to take my 920xm chip and move over to a m17x in the future =P

You definitely won't be finding any Core i7-920XM OEM CPUs at that price. All the ones in the $350 to $450 range are QS/ES.

Here's a used OEM and the asking price is $900 bucks.

Intel Core i7 920XM 2 GHz Processor mobile OEM SLBLW - eBay (item 250686380258 end time Oct-21-10 09:47:01 PDT)

This Canadian seller is asking close to $1200 bucks for a new OEM i7-920XM.

    Intel 2.0 GHz i7- 920XM processor - eBay (item 110498373310 end time Oct-20-10 09:47:01 PDT)

That's not money well spent. The 940XM isn't money well spent either when you see what a 920XM ES can do.

Come on faiz23. Give your TDP/TDC another bump to get 27.00 multipliers across the board. You're so close now. :D

Well I just did some tests and found out 2 things. Firstly, running with a single stick of ram does not help, when overclocking with ThrottleStop I am still suffering a considerable hit in memory bandwidth :(. And secondly, this laptop does not run the ram in dual channel mode at all - or if it does then there is 0 performance gain over single mode.

Doing some reading now and it actually looks like MCP79 never has supported dual channel memory operation :( It says Dual Channel in MaxxMem and CPU-z though...is that just because 2 sticks are present?

And the hit to bandwidth happens regardless of FSB. Tested it at FSB/MEM with 1333/1333, 1066/1066, 1066/1333

This sucks :( It only effects benching so is not a deal-breaker for me but is a let down. Also the bottleneck is painful, this ram is rated at 10666 MB/s and I am getting 8900 MB/s. At least the ram performance properly increases as the FSB/MEM is raised, so that is working.

What exactly did you find John? And on what notebook, the Asus? Feel free to get online to talk more

The more I research and test the more obvious it is that the MCP79 chipset is the huge achilles heal of this laptop :( Really wish I had an intel chipset (X38 like the W90 would be heaven but even a PM45 would be awesome)

Still researching about the chipset. According to nvidia the memory bus is 128-bit wide and capable of 21 GB/s implying dual channel, but so far my tests are not supporting that claim at all. Not even close. Data found on chipset here

    Vantage:
    Overall: P17236
    GPU: 16011
    CPU: 22366

The true test will be a dice run. Then the thermal throttling will be totally out of the question. I might be able to hit 23K with dice, and undervolted GPUs, and a disconnected CPU fan since it will be useless. May also fry my junk.

M 920XM OEM holds a load a lot better then my 940XM ES. Say for example on Vantage, CPU test one, Both will ramp up to around 3300 OP/s but the 920 will drop and hold a constant 3100 OP/s, where as my 940 at the same settings will drop down to 2800 OP/s. Check this for example, Both with the same tests run all at the same settings.

920XM OEM vs. 940XM ES Tests

when you did those test...say 3d06 for example. did you run it at least three times back to back? like example: run it once. look. then run it again. look. then run it again just to see if they changed? mine will jump around for time to time.

nah, you already said you were keeping them both. :)

Yea, for the most part the stayed in the same range, They were all run with the same background apps, stock everything, identical conditions. The flucuation was actually much closer then I expected it to be. When I get back to the states I'll mail you both the chips to test, and send back, I'm pretty sure the results will verify what I found. Something just aint right. At least with my 940XM, best way to discribe it is "weak" under load. I should be back late OCT, or very early Nov. Like to see what you can do with them. I'm sure blow my scores out of the water, but still be interesting.

    Hey Peeps,

Okay so I've just run a few bench runs. The scores are a little better after the CPU OC. GPUs still running on stock. Feel free to compare and beat my scores lol ;) :D

How did you go DR? I haven't really managed any great scores I don't think; so you should be able to beat them quite easily. I was hoping for a bit more but it seemed to get worse with each bench run lol. Only 15k in 3d mark06 and 14k in Vantage. I did manage the 1 scores in the pics below. Other than that I think I did run a better Vantage run but forgot to take a pic of it. 3d mark 06 scores were disappointing around the 15k mark every time after I played around more with the CPU OC. Not too sure whats going on there. Perhaps throttling or I need more Voltage lol.

So my top 2 scores for each respectively so far are below.

Let us know how you go or anyone else. Also what settings did you use or try when OCing? I just did the CPU OC in setfsb and set the Vcore in the bios to 150mv and the DDR3 ram voltage to 1.7v up from the default setting.
I've been too lazy to flash OC my GPUs. ;)

Oh wow not bads there DR. Too bad it wasn't enough for the trophy though :( ;)

I managed around 3.2Ghz when I was OCing a little yesterday. I didn't really try to push it any higher. It was quite a hot day as well with no air con atm so I didn't want to go any higher. The fans were insanely loud too during benching.

Did you manage any benching runs yet?

    Cheers. :)

the Bios shouldn't matter unless your settings were altered. the bios only affected extreme cpus multipliers. in the past others have tried to co the 720qm, but its always been a weak chip. i think 3.4 was the highest ive seen, but i only checked the asus thread a little. Once it cools off i think im gonna try the first 20k 3d06 on a dual core, ive been able to keep my cpu stable @ 4.1ghz for about 3 days now, im gonna let it rest and get the AC back out, see what this 640 can do!!

Hmm, I'll swap out the 1333MHz 8GB for the 4GB 1066MHz and overvolt that for stability and see if I have any better luck. Also going to flash back to A07 and see if that helps.

Scook, thats a good article. It also supports the issue that I see with my i7 940XM ES. My 920XM will outperform the 940XM from some reason. It holds a load much better, or is more stable.

    Nice DR650se!

And better late than never haha. They say they were waiting to pair it against a comparable system. They usually do not have Alienware systems, just Clevo via Eurocom so not complaining!

I was just thinking about my SSD, and decided to check CrystalDisk info since I manage to crash this system counteless times a night when I bench. The 640GB is my storage drive in the system at the moment, and look at the differance in power on count/hours! That explains benching in a nut shell
