Yea, Just spent all night in my office benching in peace and quite lol. Backing everything up to a USB drive as well, just to be safe.

thanks dr650, awesome cpu score bro. gonna try to take you down, hehehe
holy crap john 29x, geez is that stable at all for you. -
it seemed stable enough to hit submit and then go to the internet and post that score..but i got nervous after that so i ....dropped the clocks down a bit...lol
and that is in no way all 4 cores running on a 29x multiplier. i dont think you can go much higher than 27x without using setfsb or turbo mode button (g73) speculation of course -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I still got you by 13 MHz!!!! lol -
13 mhz huh?
there is so much i can say there, but wont...lol -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I jest because I am confident you will beat it. Also, at the same clock your cpu is probably about 30-50% faster lol
-
thanks john, i'm contacting abo again to see if i can get setFSB working on my new setup. hopefully it will.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I am sure it can be made to work. Wish I had an Intel chipset....then I could use it too. It does not work with nvidia chipsets
You may need to tear down the laptop and find the PLL chip though haha (unless some one else already has) -
Man I just can't win. The ribbon that connects my power button to the motherboard died on me a few days ago. I'm still using the computer. but had to substitute the touchpad ribbon. I never use the touchpad on the M17x though. Having shift key issues too. It's only working for some keys. They ribbon and shift key issue might be connected. Who knows.
John I saw that cpu-z score, pretty sweet. Not even sure I'm going to try and beat it. -
As far as SetFSB goes, email him and he will give you a new code. He's given me 5-6 since I was reinstalling and wiping my drive since I had SSD issues.

Someone has found the pll but there are two mobo's floating around with a different pll on each, 1 will work 1 won't. It's a hit and miss, without a pinmod the second won't work which is what my mobo has unfortunately
-
yeah for the M15x setFSB is hit and miss, really hoping i luck out.
-
DaneGRClose Notebook Virtuoso
Worst part is it almost seems AW caught wind of it and put it to a stop as the pll's seemed to pop up only in 11 and 12 series mobo's which is about the time it was discovered to work.
-
tough break there...can it be had from dell?
well...you can try the g73 pll if you havent already
yeah...im not..i think that was just a lucky day..haha -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
You know what to do John. Get it colder! And boost voltage if you can haha
-
DaneGRClose Notebook Virtuoso
Already tried the g73 pll myself along with a few others abo recommended, they throw the computer into a freeze requiring a hard shut down.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
And the Intel XTU does not work with the M15x?
Is that bios also Phoenix? And john, were you able to open up any of that Asus bios? On all the asus desktop boards I have had they used American Megatrends -
its strange we haven't been able to figure out why it won't work for some. and the pll search was a bust too. don't think we ever found it.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I was never able to find the PLL on my M17x either. And that was a pain to take apart and inspect
-
Notsure, but I need dell to replace the mobo anyway because my speakers don't work. Not sure what when on with them, but the actual notebook speakers don't work. So now my list of issues is, speakers, ribbion, GPU, and the keypad. Might be enough issues for a replacement. I don't really want one since I like this system and it seems to overclock pretty well. With my luck I'd get stuck with a unit that isn't SetFSB compatible. Although I think all M17x R2 units are since they need an unlocked TME to OC the 5% in the bios.
Which brings me to another thing I found out. Today I was benching on the 920 and had the bios at 5% OC. Well then I shut down, put in the 520, and the bios remained on 5% OC. But the overclock option was grayed out at 5%. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
NICE. Although it will only benefit the small crowd switching cpus to lower models like you lol. And does it stick after restarting with the non extreme cpu? -
Yea, it actually stuck when I was booting with the i5 540M and the i7 720M. Which was nice. So if anyone has a friend that has a XM cpu, they can always insert, 5% OC, shut down, and replace, and now thier buddy has a permanant 5% OC until the bios is reset.
Everything booted with a 140MHz FSB. I thought it was pretty neat. -
what about diagnostic mode...does it show the registers?
nope, not yet. they seem to think it's encrypted. they can see the options we need, but can't make changes. not to mention no one seems to know how to do a bios recovery on this.
nice find!! -
I also found while benching that my heatsink doesn't make enough contact with the CPU, which is likely what jokers retention mod was about. My CPU would start thermal throttling, but if I applied pressure to the heatsink, the temps dropped. I'm thinking I might have to get a thin copper shim to fit between the die and the heatsink to added pressure.
-
what chip are you benching now dr650se?
-
Well I've put a stop to my benching till I get home for the time being. I move out in about 12 days so I want the system to last till then
At the moment it feels like it's falling apart. I just found in order to get my shift keys working right, I need to have the AlienFX lights on. And in order oto do that, I need to unplug, wait a few sec, and plug back in. Then power up. If I shut down and start back up, the lights flash real quick and go out, until the next time I unplug. Basically I have to power drain every time.
When I get home I think I might sell the i3 330, i5 450, and i7 720. 330 and 450 I tried again today with no luck.
But here is what I was able to score. my GPU clocks can go up, but I Managed this on a low CPU OC. Once I get dual GPU's back, I think I'll break 24K. If not, I'll definately be on top of the 3DMark06 board in this thread.

cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Man....guess I need to see what my 4870s can do with a single card and a 4.16 GHz quad. Never done that run lol -
DaneGRClose Notebook Virtuoso
Johnkiss - Diagnostic mode is what abo recommended second, all he would say is that it was most likely a TME locked pll. I got a few of them to not give me the pll error popup but any time I tried to change anything it froze.
-
You need to! Start picking up some single GPU points! I was looking at that yesterday at work. Was wondering why you havn't benched all the programs or single GPU, defaintely some points to be had. I can access HWbot from work, but sadly NBR was blocked months ago. Prior to I was on NBR 10+ hours a day. It was nice.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
There is not a single 4870 category. Otherwise it would already be done lol
-
Put a request in on the Support Tickets sub-forum. I've done it with CPU's and the 335M GPU. Just have to include a screenshot of GPU-Z so they can add the catagory. They generally add them pretty quick too. Could mean some easy free gold cups.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I just made a discussion thread on it but will try that method as well. Have to wait until I get home to do the GPU-z.
edit: Had a screenshot of a single GPU from february haha, shows crossfire available but disabled, think that would be good enough? Made the support ticket -
you need to mess with the registers.. preferably the same ones joker was changing.
you seem to be gravely mistaken..

I am asking them to get rid of the x2 naming and simply make it 1x and 2x Mobility Radeon HD 4870 to remove any ambiguity. As 2x Mobility Radeon HD 4870x2 would imply 4 gpus
I know we have been over this before John -
and it's not gonna get changed any time soon (it's been two years now and it's still the same thing)..not sure why you guys keep trying? it's on the list of to do things. once they get around to it...it will get done. and since that is listed for each of your cards...dont think you have 4x gpus either..

Only one line of the registers would populate on diagnostics for me. My other concern would be 1-do we know, or even have a pretty educated guess, that it's the same registers that change the m15x as the m17x and 2-is there any risk of permanant damage due to a lockup while changing those registers?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
GPU-z says Radeon Mobility 4870 actually
http://i50.tinypic.com/34eum2d.jpg -
one line huh....that's what my gateway did and it would not over clock for nothing in the world.
scook9: some how i knew you were going to do that, but im too lazy to post all the prior driver versions that show 4870x2
-
DaneGRClose Notebook Virtuoso
Strange part is the mobo's that work work with another pre-set asus pll and populate all the lines, it's very weird. Abo also said that I could do a pin mod to get it to work as the info he got from my screen shot showed a tme lock so it wouldn't populate, he said if I could do the correct pin mod it would work, but then the warranty is bad.
-
so they locked it...wonder if he has the data sheet to pin mod it to 166...
can the pin mod be done with hot glue?? that way it can be reversed later. or does it involve you un soldering something off the board. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I actually just downloaded 4 versions from dell and all do not have the x2 in them......and all I did in that one is add the 10.2 so i could tell the infs apart in device manager -
really? i just opened up one and it says ati mobility hd radeon 4870x2
cat 10.2. cant tell if its because of mobility modder though.
but anyway, keep up the good fight...they might change it soon.
reminds me..i need to have them change my 620 since it's listed int he wrong section as well. -
now that's some bs...scook9...go look at the one thor posted and look at how fast it got added
-
Hmm, how do you change the priority?
-
and kateiphil was the one that got it added in the first place..
Videocard specifications requests : ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2 - hwbot.org
no clue... i never submitted a ticket before. -
Well I think tommorrow I might have to run a few GPU benches. If only I had some copper shims here things would be so much easier lol. Time to call it a night.
-
aright dr. have a good one.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Well I just checked EVERY ATI driver I have that was not mob modded, ALL say 4870 (no x2)
I suspected that the W90 folk would be the reason it was x2. Was thinking it over the whole drive home from work lol
SO in that case...they can make a new section all together and there will 4870 and 2x4870 then a separate 4870x2 section
-
i think your right..i looked at a few more and it said 4800 series, but using the modder added the x2.
and after searching that database as well...you mean to tell me...your the first one to do a support ticket
no wonder it never got fixed....lol
and all this time i thought you had..*facepalm* on me.
also scook, do the gpuz validation on techpower up...they dont have any mobile 4870 anything up there.
