congrats DR finally going home from Iraq![]()
Sounds good![]()
Will check out the scores you get, and see if i need some cooling, any cpu overclock gives me throtttling :/ Too much heat. Going to see how high i can get it with just 75mv though.

hey guys...faisalhero is joining the team

scook or anyone that overclocked the 280Ms, did I mention recently that I hate nvidia system tools? All my overclocks are just too unstable using it, and the only time I can get evga or msi to work is the one time before I crash, which then results in a system freeze if I try to run either program again. The only resolution is to do a scan disc, which I'd rather not like to do every 10minuites on my SSD. So the question is, any way around this or any other overclocking program suggestions?

There is a reason I always used nvflash
-
or try msi afterburner and an earlier driver...
-
I have, and earlier drivers will not work in the R2, I'm limited to 197.52s
I'll have to give it a go I suppose, was artifacting on 100mhz core/ram clocks with system tools ftl -

Bad news
After a failed flash of the gpu (through windows, first time I have had a problem at all) the whole system is now acting not good......I am not getting post and the screen backlight is never coming on. I think it is related to the gpus somehow but the same thing happens even if I remove both 4870s. Will try throwing in a GTX 280m to see what happens.....
update: GTX 280m made NO difference. Pulling CMOS is making no difference. This is looking like I may need a new motherboard since the 9400m is not even kicking in on its own when both discretes are removed -
sucks to hear, I'm sure it was just a concidence rather than being a fault of the flash program.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
No it was the flash. Hopefully it did not brick my card. Swapping the heatsinks now so I can try to use the good one as the primary to flash the other one. Since unfortunately the 9400m cannot be on unless the 4870s are powered down, so can't flash them
Going to undo the retention clip mode as well since I have the heatsinks off (did not benefit me at all)
update: well that was enough fun for one night......all is well now....so back to benching! -
so you were able to flash the first card back using the second card, right?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Yep, all is well and I just uploaded all my single 4870 runs

Looks like I may not have been as lucky as I was hoping....here is FurMark with crossfire (meaning the card that was broken being used)
I see the same behavior in all programs that utilize crossfire. That is exactly how it looks to the human eye as well, no artifacts due to camera.
(Forgive the music, had radio on in background - benching in silence is no fun!)

I am pretty sure I have the cable seated properly....could that cause this? or do I need a replacement card? (looked like the corners of that die might be ever so slightly chipped as well - my bad) -
Looks like you need a new card chiefs. You can give the cable a go again but I don't think its the cable. Dell will prob send 2 new cards and a cable. Knowing dell LOL.
So it happens in all things using crossfire is it? hmmsss interesting.............
Actually I remember now a few other people had the same problem as you before. That exact problem and they needed their GPUs changed. The card is defected now chiefs. Unfortunately. Sorry to hear.
Cheers.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Ya but I am confident that the 2nd card (my old primary) is hurting. The chipped corners on the die are most likely to blame. I will go post a warning in the cooling mod thread.
-
Ah k cool cool chiefs. Yeh just tell dell you only want the one specific card then I guess.
Yeh that will be a good heads up for the cooling mod thread. Thanks.
Cheers.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I will just tell them I am having video problems and it goes away when I turn off crossfire so it must be the 2nd card. They are easy to deal with, you just have to know what to tell them
-
did you reflash under windows or in dos?
-
Ehehehe yups very true that.
Who knows they might even give you 5870s LOL.
Apparently a couple of people have tried the 5870s in the R1. I could do as well but have been too lazy.
Cheers.

Just tried overclocking my cpu for the first time with setfsb and then ran 3dmark06 and got a score of 17007. Have attached screen shots below of results and setfsb screen and temp the cpu reached when running 3dmark06. Everything else is still stock. Using new vbios and dell 8.763 video drivers.

Oh wow nice chiefs. My best with a little CPU OC the other day was something like 16.5k
Nice score.
Cheers.

ORB - Compare
looks like you need to pick it up a bit...
-
Thanks Reborn.
JohnKsss- Had a look at the compare link you posted, they are i7 -950 desktop processors. How is that a comparison to my i7-820qm? The 950 is running at 2.2Ghz whereas i only overclocked to 1.92. I dont think i can get my 820 to those speeds. I have tried setting the register to 38 and it BSOD's. I dont think i can get it to run much faster. Anyone have any ideas or am i missing something? -
well sean...that's a 920xm being benched and not a 950.
i have a g73jh. the one in my sig..
should have asked first my friend...
the registers have to be changed together.... -
Oles I just got 16 000 for the Virtual score LOL.
Cheers.

-
oh yeah, forgot about the virtual bench..lol
sean
if you paid for setfsb...then you should beable to use our pll (g73jh) and the sliders should work. -
What score do you get for the virtual bench John?
+ Others?
Cheers.
-
Oh ok yes there is a 920 score there, but there is also a 950 score there too. What do you mean the registers have to be changed together. I have changed the other registers to
00 - 29,
OC - 20,
OF -98
and then i just increase the register 10 that has 31 to begin with upto 37. I followed a thread about overclocking posted by Joker. Anything else i can do to push it up further to get a higher cpu overclock ? -
not sure...ill do it when my machine comes back from rma.
it doesnt read 920xm right.
and check my post again
for this
if you paid for setfsb...then you should beable to use our pll (g73jh) and the sliders should work. -
What happened to your system?
-
that is exactly what my 5870s were doing in my old R2
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Windows XP using WinPhlash through RBE is what failed. atiflash in DOS worked great and so did WinPhlash in Windows 7, so I guess ther version I got is just not compatible with Windows XP or does not work in ATA mode or something
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
He benched it...lol
I was wondering if that is what the 5870 "flickering" was like, now I know. I am going to try to get a new secondary card sent out today. -
got the 740 and PM55 all tim'd up, time to go get some numbersz!
btw, i noticed that once again, the tim pad for the cpu moffsets made no contact at all, threw another .5mm pad on there and it didn't make contact either. Just like with my other R2, 2.0mm worth of pads are needed to make contact with those moffsets, just thought I'd throw that out there. -
what exactly do the moffsets do? Those are the three chips by the CPU using a thermal pad near under the heatsink right?
-
yes, and they're the power supply regulators for the whole mainboard. keeping them cool= better power regulation= higher overclocks
. You shouldn't expect miracles, but it should be overall more stable.
Dell orginally wanted them cooled by the cpu heatsink, but it looks like whoever told them 1.0mm pads were enough didn't have his coffee.
You might see cpu temps go up a bit, however the advantages it brings should negate any increase, and I'm sitting @ ~ 33-36C on all cores right now anyway. -
Oh wow thats pretty cool temps chiefs. Nice.
I'm sitting on 53 degs C on each core atm. quite higher than yours ey and we have the same CPU. I too noticed that they didn't make contact last time so I just slabbed on 2 thermal pads on top of each other oles. My load temps were much better after that.
What thermal paste did you use?
Cheers.
-
I'm using AS5 because I ran out of G751

New card is en route, should get here Monday or Tuesday. Had a really good rep, will be sure to use him in the future if needed.
-
Nice, awesome deal there. Hope the new card is a strong OCer.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I am curious to see what version they send. As the R1 and R2 4870s had different vbios versions and potentially different heatsinks as well -
I never knew that. So if you get a differant version, will that pose an issue? I'm looking forward to getting some warranty service for several things on my system when I get back too, hopefully all goes as smooth as it did for you.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Well regardless of what it comes with, it will get the R2 4870 vbios as this can generally go about 20 MHz higher. And as for the heatsink, I will just resuse the R1 one if I can since it is a known quantity and cools my current 4870 very well -
not exactly why it got rma'd though....lol
benching went fine. -
well, me and scook have been pm'ing back and forwarth and after his final suggestion to try nibitor 5.2 and I can conclude that at this time, you can not nvflash overclock GTX285s. Since evga and msi essentially don't work we're left with just system tools, which sucks so bad we might as well conclude that overclocking on the GTX285's is simply a no go situation right now. The cards were artifacting heavily with system tools on as little as 80mhz/35mhz and /240mhz overclocks. It was perfectly stable on evga when it worked and now it's just not on system tools
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
In that case, the GTX 280m's are a win! See if dell will swap you for a pair, they should work in the R2 since the GTX 285m's work. They are otherwise the same cards
lol -
I even tried nabbing the .roms using nvflash, this is just utter BS.. going to post up the .roms on the nibitor forums but I don't have very much faith.
-
Man tough break, Other then benching, how do the cards work? Do they run hot? Stable for gaming? Havn't been following that thread.
-
they run just fine really, maybe a little cooler than stock 5870s, the only gripe I have is lack of driver support.
-
Well at least they run pretty good. i find it funny that lack of driver support is one of the complaints since thats why so many individuals stated that they perfer Nvidia over ATI, on the other hand, that's always the case when new hardware is released. Sucks that you can't bench though.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
He can bench....just at stock speeds with the dell drivers
Although it should be easy enough to mod the inf and overcome the driver part
