to say the least...450 bucks (120gb ocz vertex) for one and 250 (pqi) for the other...but they rma'd them so they should be sending me brand new ones hopefully by the end of the week.

don, point me to the recent far cry 2 benchmarks.

But it does in 3dMark06, which is why 3dMarkVantage is considered a more reliable system benchmark. 3dMark06 is fun and useful in certain situations, but don't make yourself miserable over it.

    Nothing wrong with your system.

With CPU @ 3.97GHz, your multiplier now over 28?

So you're saying that the difference between an 820 and a 920 (reng didnt overclock anything with the score im referring to) is about 4,000 3d06marks? I get 14900 he gets 19,000 (out of the box, no overclocking).

I'm using 9.12 hotfix mobility modded. Clean install, literally. win7ultimate x64->drivers->3dmark06 and then vantage. nothing else on the rig. My settings are immaculate.

I'd like to see if everyone else with an 820 and hd4870x2 is getting around 15,000 3d06marks out of the box and everyone with a 920 and hd4870x2 is getting between 18,000 and 19,000 out of the box.

I don't think it could be a problem with my crossfire because my score drops to 11,000 when i disable it.

I will say this: when I do the windows performance assessment after first formatting and installing windows (you know, when drivers for like RICOH and ethernet and CIR are missing), my score is like 7.6 or something pretty high (on the stock windows drivers). This is without catalyst drivers, therefore no crossfire and a yellow exclamation error in device manager on the slave GPU. After installing 9.12 hotfix mobility modded and enabling crossfire, my windows assessment drops to a variable 5.9-6.0. I find that weird, and possibly indicator of the problem (though i dont have a clue as to what it is).

Either way, I'm gonna return this thing and either drop down to a 720 (since the 820 doesn't seem to make a noticeable difference for 300 dollars) or upgrade to a 920.

What programs are you running during your benchmark? Because every running application WILL lower your score.

So this is where the experience comes in, please notice that these guys are benchies. I do not know what your level of expertise is ATM? Keep in mind this machine is made for gaming, benchmarks are only paper indicators of what it can do...

why are you returning your machine on one benchmark that was made for dx9 cards???

it's heavily cpu bound and anything that has to do with the cpu the scores will vary.

so .3ghz will be a 2000 point increase and the gpu scores is affected by the cpu clock speed so watch other games before you make that choice.

i hate to sound rude but if you read my post you'll notice the only thing installed on my machine is windows, drivers, and 3dmark 06 and vantage...

benchmarks are only an indicator, but having the same graphics cards with dramatically lower scores (overclocking and CPU type taken into account, since reng didn't overclock anything on the score im referring to) indicates an actual issue.

yep. i would indeed do the same thing. if i paid over $3000 for something, i want to make sure it is at it's best. Benchmarks might just be indicators, but if it's off by that much, clearly something is wrong. of course i would test out some game benches first, then send it back anyway and hope the replaced system doesn't give the same results. (example) my R1 is only 12000k 06marks but crysis is 27FPS on 1920x200p all very high. q9000 sli 260. i was not impressed with the 06marks score, but i was with crysis benchmark. i was only planning to keep this laptop till the official release of DX11 cards so it didn't bother me. If you are going to keep your laptop for a long long while, send it back immediately.

I'm just saying this isn't right:

Reng's no overclocking, out of the box, score:
    http://img693.imageshack.us/img693/1331/3dstock.png

    Mine:
    http://imgur.com/zDdBL.png

Maybe I'm a huge noob, but I don't see why his SM2.0 Score and HDR/SM3.0 Scores would be that much higher than mine when we're using identical graphics cards at identical clocks with identical drivers.

His CPU score was 1,000 more than mine. Makes perfect sense. He has a 920 I have an 820. But the other two, SM2.0 Score and HDR/SM3.0, which should be based off of graphics performance, are somehow higher than mine as well, by over a thousand each.

It just seems to me that my ati cards (or one of them) might be junktards.

And has rengs done a stock clocks no overclocking vantage run? I haven't seen any so might vantage score wouldn't be much use for comparison yet.

The CPU has a great effect on the graphics score as well. Everytime I increased the CPU clock, my GPU scores increased. Very CPU bound. That is another reason the 920 costs $1050. It's a great CPU, provided that dell can feed it adequate power.

Did you read Don's post? He has quite some point's there, 06 being CPU bound, and will actually score very much higher with just 0.3MHZ higher clocks.

Did you see a 06 score with an 720 and XFire stock? This would also be a good comparison.

Hey, but it's your machine, I'm not telling you what to do with it, if you think there is something wrong with it! Just call Dell and make sure they say there is and will replace it.

say don...i did a stock cpu run (2.8 ghz) and an over clocked cpu run (4.5 ghz) and there was exactly no change in far cry 2 71 fps both times...so it's not cpu driven

    side note:
a stock i7 will score 4800 (it's version 2.8 ghz) points in 3dmark06 cpu test
so 920 mobile is a tad bit behind the desktop version.... only because it starts at 2.0 ghz...had it started at 2.66 ghz.....

i think different games will take advantage of a cpu increase in speed differently (or not at all). I also think he illustrated that, at least in 3dmark06, all 3 factors that affect your score will increase or decrease depending on your processor.

On my m17x r2 with the stock dell driver, in 3dmark 06 I get the following:
    with Crossfire
    11275 3dmarks
    4420 SM 2.0 score
    5054 SM 3.0 score
    3557 CPU score
    with Crossfire disabled:
    6303 3dmarks
    2262 SM 2.0 score
    2534 SM 3.0 score
    3557 CPU score

I have problems with screen rolling when I have crossfire enabled and it goes away when I disable crossfire, but there was another user that put his stock driver 820qm scores and they were 15.7k with crossfire enabled and 10.9k with it disabled. Dell is supposed to be sending a new slave card and cable on Monday, but does it sound like maybe the master card is screwed too if I'm only getting 6.3k with the stock driver with crossfire disabled?

Thanks for sharing, the first Vantage I have seen with the M17x-r2?!? I guess

Quick & dirty 3DMark 06 run on a 720, Xfire 4870s, stock out of the box dell drivers. The only optimization I did was to kill some services.

Maybe this will make a useful baseline for the 720.

I haven't had a chance to do much yet--I did run GTA4 on pretty high settings last night and it was freakin' awesome compared to my old XPS w/ 7950GTX. I'll get the settings the way I want them and run a GTA bench since nobody else has gotten to it yet. I still have to buy Crysis and a few others to really put it thru its paces.
