seconded, when I do a fresh install I always clone the original disk image to another drive for emergency situations
of course, I have a plethora of spare disks I can use

Sorry Boss....it won't happen again.

If you use the Dell Datasafe Local Backup Utility, it'll make you a restore disk that restores the system to factory settings. There is one gotcha--whatever size disk you create them from is the minimum size needed for restore, even though it's not strictly necessary. So if you make the image from a 500GB disk, you need a 500GB+ disk to restore to. If you want the original factory image onto a smaller disk (like an SSD) you'll have some extra work:
I ghosted the drive to an old 100GB drive and made a recovery disk from there that works on smaller drives. The factory image works great--nothing is missing. It restores not only win7 & drivers, but also AW branding/wallpapers and recreates the restore partition on the new drive.
Datasafe also supports creating a USB stick recovery disk, but I don't have any big enough (5GB+). -
i think this is for someone else...

I was reading something about the 920 in the M17x being held back by Intel turbo mode or something and the G73 being able to push them farther? Is there any kind of work around for this?
-
probably...but depends on how much time and effort people want to spend on trying to make it work....
-
the G73 has a TDP limit feature in the BIOS so it does not throttle when it use a certain amount of watts or gets a certain degree
-
Unless of course you max out the PS.
-
you can always go out and get a beefier psu....
mandrake...you know what time it is right?
time to run the heaven bench in dx11 mode...run it twice..
1024x768 first
then max res second.
when you get time that is. -
Quad point me in the direction of a Targus PS that is rated 2.5A 180W. I can't find a reputable seller for it. It's the Targus APA05US. Do you have any recommendations?
I'll download the enchmark now. -
let me check..i think one of our stores sells that same psu
right here. very good place. just like tiger or the egg. i use them because they allow you to walk in and buy as well.

verify the tip before purchasing. -
I think Quad already verified the tip would work....at least I hope.
Here is Heaven, stock system, stock settings.
-
good deal.
30fps
now the hard part....
did you look at the walls and the street? -
Yeah I can tell the difference. More 3D than normal. The full screen benchmark looks like it's running in a loop for some reason.
Edit: Never mind for some reason it didn't automatically go into benchmarking mode. -
Full res, stock settings, stock system.
-
thank you sir!!
and now you can understand how taxing dx11 can be.
how did you like the different res sizes? did it make a serious difference or not so much? -
Yes it did. I noticed the difference with the scenes that had "blur" in the background. The transition between the "up close view" and what was in the distance was much nicer. I hope I articulated that well enough. I'm a tech, not a wordsmith.
-
lol
yep
now go in there and do a walk through and look at everything closely...and check out the tessellations -
Yeah it's cool at first but gets boring fast.
-
that's only so when the next knucklehead says dx10 is better than dx11...you'll know better.and why..lol
i really need to play a game, but my machine has been benching for like 3 months straight. -

I was running 3DMark 03 last night, that thing was pretty inconsistent
And I am like 100 points behind the leader on HWBot and it is driving me crazy! Although I did not even come within 1000 points of that score again all night.
Switching to dual core helped alot though
-
Do they have a special section for mobile on hwbot?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
not quite, it just goes by hardware specs, so I am competing in the 4870m x2 and QX9300 specs
I also threw in my 3870x2 and GTX 280m stuff since I figured, why not -
just as scook says...not directly.
it's based on over clocking hardware. so all laptop hardware you have over clocked and benched would qualify you to get a decent score...as laptops go. and it's slowly starting to catch on. -

Hey John, I got as many gold cups as you now
lol -
Very informative thread, you'd definitely know whether your M17x is performing like it should comparing some of the marks!
-
I was looking at the benchmark scores in between the M17X R2 and the G43 and I am surprised that theVantage CPU score for the G43 is much higher than on the M17X R2 at around the same OC.
Why is that? -
you know they have a signature section over there so you can post your scores here like im doing.
congratz on the gold cups!! -
G73 has a TDP limit remover in the bios, R2 does not. We discussed this a few pages back. -

i want to join but i'll be the lone ranger going in solo.
-
solo?
i think not buddy...lol
you have scook to contend with so far.and he is putting it down for the qx9300!..better get in there and get some medals before they are all accounted for...lol -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
only QX9300 one I aint got right now is the CPU-z validation, just can't get to my desktop higher than 3.33 at room temp
-
Hmmm.. just noticed my FPS on games is lower than when I had my 260's SLI. Let me do a Vantage run and post it here so you guys can see if it makes sense. Be right back.

Looking forward to it. -
OK bad news. First props to you guys for seating through that thing for such a long time. Now for my grand scores
Don't need to be a benchrunner to realize this is BS. So any idea guys? I ran Furmark 1.8 for 10 mins and picked the 3 options from the Flickering thread. It ran slow, like 7 FPS but no issues. Temps seem fine. Here are my max:
I'm using Dell's drivers. X-fire is enabled. -
looks like your locked in low 2d mode?
did you reboot your computer and try it? -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
my and quad had this problem but it was with other games. i'm waiting for quad to try the method out before anything to see whats up.
-
Reboot it? I haven't made any changes, John. I can do that though, and run it again. I just don't see how it will make a difference since I ran this Vantage after running Furmark which was ran after I rebooted my PC.
-
your driver is locked in 2d mode.
if you run furmark in windowed mode with gpuz right next to it...you see that it doesn't go above those low clocks.
you could have mismatched drivers causing this, but not readily able to see it.
do have disk for each card, starting with the card with the highest pci bus number. -
One of my bios options for my G73 is to enable or disable "Three Strike Counter". This options was available after the 920 install. Have you seen it before?
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
john we had this problem but only in certain games. where fc2, crysis, vantage, and 06 was fine but games like prototype, ninja blade, spider-man friend or foe, would run like a snail. and it was because of the clocks.
-
OK, that makes sense. But I don't understand this last part.
-
So what do you do? All my games run < GTX260's. Dell's drivers seem to work for most, but could that be the cause?
-
never heard of this one...what is the nearest options to it?
when you click on your vga cards in device manager, each one sits on a different bus.
this doesn't fall under 2d locked clocks? well his..,..and his furmark was low. -
It's under CPU performance advanced options menu and next to another sub menu to turn turbo mode on and off along with the extreme proc settings.
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
try to uninstall and then reinstall your driver and see what happens.
if that doesnt work. i'll tell you the long way how to do it. -

@Mandrake, have you read all the documentation that came with the G73? This sounds like a proprietary bios option added by Asus. I'm sure there will be some mention of it in the documents somewhere.
-
No this is completely undocumented. No one even knew we could OC in the bios until I installed the 920 in the system.
-
now they are all slapping them selves for not spending the extra 1k for getting it....lol
i know i would have! (been slapping my self)
it would have went right back...lol... or i would have got one from ebay
