seconded, when I do a fresh install I always clone the original disk image to another drive for emergency situations

of course, I have a plethora of spare disks I can use

If you use the Dell Datasafe Local Backup Utility, it'll make you a restore disk that restores the system to factory settings. There is one gotcha--whatever size disk you create them from is the minimum size needed for restore, even though it's not strictly necessary. So if you make the image from a 500GB disk, you need a 500GB+ disk to restore to. If you want the original factory image onto a smaller disk (like an SSD) you'll have some extra work:

I ghosted the drive to an old 100GB drive and made a recovery disk from there that works on smaller drives. The factory image works great--nothing is missing. It restores not only win7 & drivers, but also AW branding/wallpapers and recreates the restore partition on the new drive.

Datasafe also supports creating a USB stick recovery disk, but I don't have any big enough (5GB+).

I was reading something about the 920 in the M17x being held back by Intel turbo mode or something and the G73 being able to push them farther? Is there any kind of work around for this?

the G73 has a TDP limit feature in the BIOS so it does not throttle when it use a certain amount of watts or gets a certain degree

time to run the heaven bench in dx11 mode...run it twice..
    1024x768 first
    then max res second.

when you get time that is.

Quad point me in the direction of a Targus PS that is rated 2.5A 180W. I can't find a reputable seller for it. It's the Targus APA05US. Do you have any recommendations?

    I'll download the enchmark now.

Yeah I can tell the difference. More 3D than normal. The full screen benchmark looks like it's running in a loop for some reason.

Edit: Never mind for some reason it didn't automatically go into benchmarking mode.

and now you can understand how taxing dx11 can be.

how did you like the different res sizes? did it make a serious difference or not so much?

Yes it did. I noticed the difference with the scenes that had "blur" in the background. The transition between the "up close view" and what was in the distance was much nicer. I hope I articulated that well enough. I'm a tech, not a wordsmith.

I was running 3DMark 03 last night, that thing was pretty inconsistent :(

And I am like 100 points behind the leader on HWBot and it is driving me crazy! Although I did not even come within 1000 points of that score again all night.

Switching to dual core helped alot though :)

not quite, it just goes by hardware specs, so I am competing in the 4870m x2 and QX9300 specs

I also threw in my 3870x2 and GTX 280m stuff since I figured, why not

    just as scook says...not directly.
it's based on over clocking hardware. so all laptop hardware you have over clocked and benched would qualify you to get a decent score...as laptops go. and it's slowly starting to catch on.

I was looking at the benchmark scores in between the M17X R2 and the G43 and I am surprised that theVantage CPU score for the G43 is much higher than on the M17X R2 at around the same OC.

    Why is that?

OK bad news. First props to you guys for seating through that thing for such a long time. Now for my grand scores

Don't need to be a benchrunner to realize this is BS. So any idea guys? I ran Furmark 1.8 for 10 mins and picked the 3 options from the Flickering thread. It ran slow, like 7 FPS but no issues. Temps seem fine. Here are my max:

your driver is locked in 2d mode.
if you run furmark in windowed mode with gpuz right next to it...you see that it doesn't go above those low clocks.

you could have mismatched drivers causing this, but not readily able to see it.
do have disk for each card, starting with the card with the highest pci bus number.

john we had this problem but only in certain games. where fc2, crysis, vantage, and 06 was fine but games like prototype, ninja blade, spider-man friend or foe, would run like a snail. and it was because of the clocks.

@Mandrake, have you read all the documentation that came with the G73? This sounds like a proprietary bios option added by Asus. I'm sure there will be some mention of it in the documents somewhere.
